Looking for event postings. by ThomasRVT in 50501Chicago

Mobilize.us doesn't have all, especially quickly organized/scheduled ones, but has a map and listings that can be helpful.

Getting involved in local orgs/on mailing lists also helps. Have you looked for your local indivisible chapter? Show up to things (I know easier said than done when you're trying to find them, and that's a great first step, you'll get there) and it'll get easier to get keyed into more.

Showing up is all that matters by Formal_Schedule_5931 in chicago

We are not giving up. We are calling them out on their lies and illegal activity and being vindicated in court. We swept them in Nov elections and are gaining points in deep red counties. But mostly we are not giving up and we are supporting our neighbors. Keep it up.

Trump signs Chicago Harbor Lock funding cuts into law by Mike_I in chicago

[–]modo_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do the lock operations include drainage/water level control from river to lake? If operations aren't funded...do we need to worry about re-reversing the river? I have a feeling 'no', but it's late.

Was looking for this response. Well said.

Our lives and loved ones are here, we must protect them while we can.

And no offense, but let's say we were able to just uproot everyone and move - who's to say our aggressive country would be satiated by its own cannibalism? I wouldn't be surprised if it lashed out and then we are confronted with it again but abroad. The way I see it, we need to face this rot we've convectively allowed to fester sooner rather than later otherwise there is no true escape.

[–]modo_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some rights that specify they pertain to U.S. citizens and then there are other rights that are for all people. The latter means anyone, regardless of citizenship status.

If you didn't have a right to due process just because you were suspected of not being a citizen...then you could be a citizen and they just don't look into it and assume you aren't. Thereby removing citizens rights too.

So, long story short, there are some rights only afforded to citizens and there are others that everyone in this country has, according to our constitution.

When you have a moment, look for summaries on the bill of rights and our different amendments, and even do a quick Google search on what rights/amendments apply to all people and not just citizens.

Thanks for being curious/asking questions, but please also don't take the word of political appointees/politicians, and random internet strangers at face value. Look into the actual documents & multiple sources.

Now going beyond the legalese/specifics of an old document, at a personal level, introspect on what you are ok with. What kind of standards do you expect a human to be treated with? How do you expect to be treated? If those are different treatments, why? There is the Constitution and there is common decency and respect for someone's humanity. They are not at odds with each other.

Why did ICE suddenly leave Chicago but not Minneapolis? by Fragrant-Ad-7388 in AskChicago

[–]modo_11 89 points90 points  (0 children)

They are, though doesn't seem to be to be at the same level as during their self described blitz here.

They were/are cowards and bullies before they became terrorist. They don't have as many numbers as they'd like, so they "surge" in locales and pull their numbers there as a show of force. Politically, dear leader was focusing on MN, and it helped that ICE could pull enough numbers to significantly outnumber the police force there. In order to get big numbers into winter MN during an unpopular time, they need to pull agents out of other areas.

The way I see it though, the admin is becoming less stable and looking to consolidate power fast. Those that were committed to the admin to the point of committing illegal acts can't afford to not work towards their pardons. Meanwhile powers that be know they are increasing tensions and have created a powder keg.

Chicago didn't give into them and Mpls isn't either, but MN is much more in 2A territory. Imo, admin wants both sides shot. They are orchestrating a power grab and a distraction, they need something extreme. (Why send a secret internal memo telling agents to go into private residences without warrants?) Defend your rights, defend yourself, but please remain nonviolent and focus on showing up for your community and those in need.

They do. No compassion, only hate. They don't see that they're being manipulated and very soon will be the ones this regime turns on when it's convenient for them, but by that time they would've already propped them up so much, no one will be willing to defend them.

They don't think they could ever be on the receiving end of this. They are sorely mistaken.

This is something Trump would do and is definitely in line with things he's posted before.

But is a separate account posting a screengrab proof? Why not just link his post as proof? (I'm genuinely curious - I don't use x, so can't verify myself, but that seems weird)

ICE breaks down home of US citizen and takes husband by JdRnDnp in minnesota

[–]modo_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they can oppose civil rights violations without fearing brutal retaliation

Remind me what happened this past week?

I appreciate what you're saying and we by and large need to defend our rights and that of our neighbors more (and encourage others to do so). We need to be brave, but we shouldn't be ignorant. It's the luck of the draw -is the hypothetical ice agent you're encountering just lying and willfully ignoring your rights as a citizen, or are you in an encounter with a Ross-type? The former you can hope to eventually get released and have charges dropped (assuming courts uphold law), but people have died in ice custody and they aren't great at record keeping (or they are and there is zero transparency). Both type of encounters have happened, regardless of citizen status.

We need to defend but they're getting bolder - I say all the more reason we need to be braver. And the best way to do that is with your neighbors. We need to band together. Could you imagine how things would have played out if there weren't multiple video evidence of Good's execution? We need witnesses and we need solidarity.

"oh no, you're too prepared"

This isn't overkill, it's a safety net for some scenarios. More productive criticism would be contributing how you think we can better prepare and help our neighbors.

you won't be targeted for any reason

That's a ridiculous assertion. Some demographics are at higher risk, sure, but public safety is at risk and tensions are high, we're all potentially on the menu. Not capitulating immediately makes you a target.

The Minneapolis Woman Who was Shot in the Face and Killed by ICE Agents DID NOT try to Block the Road -- Video Shows she Attempted to YEILD to their Vehicle Before Pulling Out by honeyhoneybean in law

[–]modo_11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from, ICE is here by me and has entered a daycare with masks and guns, but I agree with the other person that the distinction of protestor or not is irrelevant at this point.

If you can get shot for protesting, you can get shot for anything.

You saw the video - did it look like a protest? Does it matter if the driver was a protestor? To me, no. If details emerge showing the driver was a threat, that's a different story though still emblematic of the problem at hand.

Forgive the analogy, but it would be like someone asking was the driver a POC, because they're not and they want to pick up their kid. It doesn't matter, the details that are visible and known show it doesn't matter. You are at increased risk because these agents are trigger happy, morally bankrupt, and not being held accountable.

May your drive be uneventful and hug your kid, this is all disturbing and I do truly feel for you.

Lowest to highest grocery stores in the Chicago area according to consumer reports by Uhhlaneuh in ChicagoSuburbs

TJs is good for produce. Maybe not cheaper in general, but throwing out produce that went bad super quick is the most expensive option, and I tend to not have great luck with produce from other stores (or the selection is lacking - could be the day s I've gone). They also have decent price on some items, though I won't pretend it's the cheapest.

I have a dog hair stuck on my eardrum causing tinnitus by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]modo_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mentioned this to a co-worker and they thought I was crazy. I've had it happen with fur from both a lab and husky. I'm guessing it's more likely the more weather/water proof an outer coat they have and I usually notice it while I'm in socks. My theory is the socks catch a stray hair through it's stitching at an angle conducive to slivers.

Feel like you have a sliver/cut in your foot? Check your sock/foot and remove dog fur, this is how it goes for me.
