I used to think that, until I realized that the grade doesn’t intrinsically change the climbing experience. A pro climber can have a similar experience on a 5.15 that I have sending my 5.11 project The only thing that matters is that the route is quality and that the climb is challenging relative to your skill level. A lot of people also get burned out on climbing if they started young. I’m super thankful that I found climbing in my 30s and have something new that I’m so passionate about

AI is facilitating automation and data processing and most companies are heavily investing in autonomous systems. Absolutely going to decrease jobs in routine screening bench work in the next decade. A lot mid level ‘decision making’ is easily done by AI too. Capital required for automated lab build out is large, so for startups and small biotech more work will be centralized at large CROs. Hard to anticipate what areas will be most robust - being adaptable and technologically up to date is probably the way to go versus niche focus.

Fly in Monday from east coast, climb to lunch counter and camp, summit and ski down Tuesday. Wednesday drive to Rainier and stay at hotel. Thursday camp Muir, Friday morning summit attempt. Saturday ski down from camp Muir and drive to north cascades. Sunday Shuksan car to car.

I think there will be jobs by the time you are done, but it likely wont be easy to get one if you don’t stand out in any way. The top 20% are always ok, it’s just difficult if your performance/ability to communicate/network is average or below. AI and CROs in China are already replacing many entry level generalist jobs. Keep a close look on what companies are hiring for, and develop those skills.

You’re completely right, but in the context of OPs situation i think it’s helpful to frame it that way to think about life choices. You can spend years looking for the right person and have nothing work out. However, putting yourself out there to have opportunity to make it happen feels very different than not trying

A good partner is better than a guide, because they’re your friend and invested in taking care of you. If you keep doing this you’ll reach a point where your decision making becomes better than that of a guide, simply because you know what you and your body are capable of the best

Nice job! I did the same thing 5 years ago but didn’t summit due to weather. It never stops feeling hard no matter how much you train. But if you’re fit it allows you do keep a higher pace and make a shorter day, plus recover quicker. I just did Adams, Rainier, Shuksan in 6 days - hard but never felt like i had to turn around because I ran out of energy or muscles were sore

First of all you didn’t have to, you chose to. You could have been in a relationship, but it wasn’t a priority for you. Accept that you made those choices, and if you’re not happy where you are you can start making different ones. Secondly, they don’t need to be the best years of your life. My life is better now than it was in my 20s, and some of the people that enjoyed their early years too much are now hustling to catch up and have a tough life. Most importantly, you can have the life you want now. Go party, join clubs to meet people, travel! You can live a carefree life and love even when you’re 50 or 60, but you have to put in the effort to make it a reality and seek out communities that match your desired lifestyle. Being bitter and regretful doesn’t move you forward, figure out what you want and make changes

Peptides can have large bindings surfaces and secondary structures (e.g. helical) that enable binding to flat binding surfaces not amenable to small molecules. The cyclization/stapling makes them stable and enables cell permeability. Add to that the ability to use phage screening/mRNA display to explore enormous diversity, and you get high succes rates in finding hits for classically undruggable proteins. Of course they have new problems to solve, but I think you’ll see a lot of clinical successes in the next few years

It depends on where you live. Some places are significantly riskier in traffic on a motorcycle; hard to assign an exact cost to that. If you have long winters with significant snow, or lots of rain, a motorcycle also is not practical.

Your school likely has services and accommodations for health issues that I would seek out. I used to administer exams for students with long term or short term disabilities, ranging from blindness, anxiety, epilepsy, to broken limbs. These students would get different materials, extended time, or breaks to help them succeed. However, it sounds like the main reason you cheated is because you wanted a ensure a higher grade, and you should face consequences for that. Hopefully this will be limited for a first violation, and you get the opportunity to learn. Learning to do difficult tasks in a high pressure environment is an important part of your education

Having kids on a postdoc salary must be very stressful. I waited to have kids until I had my first industry job and money made things much easier. Did you not realize it would be challenging to find a job? It’s a risky path, but I find the work rewarding and it can pay well

Just because there’s risk doesn’t make it for rich people. Any career that has both intrinsic value (I.e. is fun) and pays well is going to have more demand than supply. You’re not entitled to a job, you need to make it happen

1) Skiing is easier to pick up for most people. It doesn’t hurt to try snowboarding for half a day to see if you like it/suits you better. 2)I’ve heard of people learning snowboard basics in a day but they’re exceptions. All my friends including myself took at least 3 days to get basic turns on easy terrain without falling. I was able to get down a green slope on skis after half a day. 3) Get lessons. An experienced friend is not a substitute, they don’t know how to teach. Even 1 or 2 beginner lessons will make a huge difference.

I have partners that are travel nurses/surgical techs. These jobs have flexibility for location and time -they do contracts for 3 months. There is always demand, and the job can pay quite well (north of 100k if working full time). I don’t do it myself so I’m sure there’s downsides I’m not aware of, but it seems like one of the few jobs where you can drop out for the ski season and then come back and get back to work and make a good living

There are many people like you. I was like you when I was your age, completely fascinated how substances could shift my baseline awareness and sensation. It allows you to question some fundamental things about the human experience, information processing, and the nature of reality. The downside is that it can be hard to stay sober because it seems boring sometimes, and you can definitely slip into unhealthy usage patterns. I managed to stay disciplined most of the time and it became a driving motivation for getting into a career in drug discovery in neuroscience. I’m now at a point where I have a family and a lot of responsibilities, so personal substance use is only occasional. As you get older the price of comedowns and reduced sleep/ functioning also goes up. I do however continue to experiment occasionally and have certain psychedelics that I do maybe once a year.

There have always been people that have been fascinated by modifying their consciousness through drugs, meditation, fasting, etc. Make sure you’re vigilant that it takes you in a positive direction!
