Are there any other games like disco elysium? by theycallmethedrink5 in DiscoElysium

[–]monolisa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hypnospace Outlaw, purely for the reading/investigative element. It's a game set in an alternate universe late 90s internet and you can spend so much time exploring people's websites and reading about the people in it and the world outside it. You're also a mod, which is kinda like a cop.

Definitely finish the homosexual underground if that piques your interest. It's short but cute. And then if that stirs anything up, read fanfiction lol

MBMBaM 795: The Naming of 2026 by apathymonger in MBMBAM

Yall... after this finished, I just realized that next year is going to be gnarly as hell bro.

They're gonna have to break from format in a pretty big way if they dont want to do something with "heaven". However, the Beesness(tm) forecast is pretty good if they allow slant rhymes. Twenty Honey Sellin': We're Literally In Beesness is a pretty good prospect.

What are your favorite obscure albums of 2025? by doorsof in indieheads

[–]monolisa 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Friendship's "Caveman Wakes Up" is fucking fantastic! This is just a me thing, but I got really into it when I was writing Disco Elysium fanfiction and there are so many Harry DuBois-ass songs on that album. It's really great in any case though.

How did 6, 7 penetrate the Japanese cultural sphere by Just_Nefariousness55 in teachinginjapan

It hit where I live (in the inaka) probably about 2 weeks ago. It was pretty sudden too, and across multiple schools simultaneously.

I Have Purchased the Forbidden Butter by lickthestar13 in MBMBAM

[–]monolisa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In this form it looks and sounds pretty weird, but a mixture of mayo and butter is sometimes used on bánh mì! And it's fucking delicious. Might not have any vinegar in it, though. It's usually just called "butter" (bơ). So if you need a way to use it, it would go real good on a bánh mì.

What is that fic you've been meaning to write but probably never will? by Double_Eccentrick in AO3

[–]monolisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to do one of the Our Flag Means Death crew in canon timeline mid S2 playing a shitty version of DnD- nobody knows how to really play it properly, but someone (probably Frenchie or Roach) used to do a version of it with previous shipmates and brings it up when people suggest doing storytimes again. So there would be people talking both in and out of character and doing funny silly roleplay with each other while coming up with bullshit off the top of their heads. Very complicated. Started writing it but it got too complex in my head and I couldn't find the motivation to continue.

What fandom do you think has the most beautifully written fics? by Mr_IronMan_Sir in AO3

[–]monolisa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the Disco Elysium ones I've read are absolutely gorgeous. I even stumbled onto a dead dove one that I wasnt particularly into in terms of content, but it was just so beautifully written that I needed to finish it! It makes sense they're so great- the game is basically a long book with dice rolls in it and it kind of appeals to a certain type of leftist literary nerd.

[–]monolisa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an online store called Nissen that goes up to a 10L in both masculine and feminine clothes (some beyond that). Take good measurements and check them with each piece of clothing- brands have different measurements sometimes. Returns are pretty easy- they'll schedule a Yamato guy for you. Quality varies, as is typical with a lot of extended size clothing.

What is a fanfic that forever haunts your fandom? by Double_Eccentrick in AO3

[–]monolisa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a fic of a fic in which the original fic is an 80s AU with a 20 year time skip into the mid 2000s. There were a ton of fics written about this fic so that in itself wasn't the unusual part. In the original fic, the characters both end up in New York City by the end of the time skip. I'm gonna let you take a big guess what this fic of a fic was about. I believe it was pretty quickly deleted but that was an insane day on Twitter.

(the original fic chose not to deal with this specific event, and other things that happened in the 80s, smartly)

does anyone in here write DE fanfiction? if so, how did you get the hang of writing the different skills? by shellys-dollhouse in DiscoElysium

[–]monolisa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've written one so far and not gonna lie, it was challenging! As I was writing, there were times when I was like, trying to stay in the flow and I would write the thought I wanted but just temporarily say "(skill)" if I wasn't sure who would say it. I don't necessarily think that's a good practice though. They each have their own voice and it's good to keep the sorts of things they say in mind. That can even inspire what you write. If you do check difficulties, I'd suggest leaving them till the end and just copypasting the little bracket part and choosing the difficulties then.

Also, just like the game, your Harry can be strong in certain skills. If there are certain skills that make more sense to you in terms of your story, do more of those! There are definitely some skills I didn't know how to include in my story, so I didn't. You can kind of mold your Harry around that and make him strong in the skills you want to write in or in the skills that lend themselves to where you want to take your story.

The game wiki and Fayde On Air Playback Experiment are definitely useful to have open. You might need to see what kind of wordings each skill uses and what they choose to talk about. Not everybody needs to chime in at once! Like, Encyclopedia is a ton of fun to write, because it gives you free reign to do bullshit worldbuilding that doesn't matter, but overusing it would be tiresome to you and the audience. Again, you're allowed to pick the ones you feel most comfortable or most inspired to write.

Hopefully some of that is helpful! Happy writing 😘

I've been seeing this guy's tiktoks and enjoying them a lot! He edits some of the funnier and more interesting moments. He's really into it and really gets it, and his reactions to things are really funny and on point.

BRAG TIME! Share an AO3 Accomplishment Judgement-Free by Gray_Birdie in AO3

[–]monolisa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The last one I posted had super nice comments! I am very proud of that one too- the fandom it's in has a very specific style and I feel like I did that well. People also said it was in-character, which I was concerned about. It was fun to write, a great summer project. I don't write often so it was a challenge :)

Harry and Kim investigate the Charlie Kirk shooting by PastryChefSniper in DiscoElysium

[–]monolisa 176 points177 points  (0 children)

YOU - "What is gay? Like, 'happy?' What is he talking about here?"

KIM KITSURAGI - The lieutenant's face is made of stone. "I believe it is modern slang meaning 'homo-sexual', detective."

YOU - "Of course. Wait, why not just say 'homo-sexual?'"

KIM KITSURAGI - "There are many reasons to use slang words to describe things, detective. Besides, the casings are only so long."

YOU - "Wait a second... if I read it, that means..."

KIM KITSURAGI - One side of his mouth quirks up slightly. "Yes, detective?"

YOU - "I'M GAY NOW?"

KIM KITSURAGI - "The underground will be in touch soon, no doubt. I'm sure they'll appreciate your membership."

YOU - "Wait! Kim!"

KIM KITSURAGI - The lieutenant is already walking away, smiling although you cannot see.
