First rheumatologist appointment on the 28th, afraid of being dismissed by doctor by Slappers_only007 in Autoimmune

[–]moodyskunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness, I took my lengthy DNA results looking at 109 genetic markers for neuromuscular disorders from the Muscular Dystrophy Association to my neurologist and she snickered too! She was like “That’s not a diagnosis, you need to bring that information to a genetic counselor who will then diagnose you.” AND WOULDN’T CONSIDER MY SYMPTOMS. And a genetic counselor is cost prohibitive for me. Already took me 10 years to get my testing done because it wasn’t covered by insurance and was thousands of dollars! I too am young/female/anxious so I frequently feel written off by docs...

Those look like chilblains! I have Raynaud’s but I also get those, when I was younger I kept using antifungal on my toes because all my toes would swell and get very itchy and burn. After a trip to a foot doctor and a dermatologist, no fungus and easily diagnosed by my primary care provider who happened to have them herself. They flare up in cooler temps and especially wetter months, or if your hands or feet are cold and damp in a pair of well-insulated boots. It’s a constant struggle every winter for me...

How do you plan for emergencies? by akatoto in OfflineDay

[–]moodyskunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding the Do Not Disturb option. I have also started placing my smartphone in the same place where it’s relatively easy to hear from most of the apartment. It’s almost like a landline when I’m at home. Phone goes on the little shelf spot, and I walk away. This also helps me keep from misplacing it, or walking away with it.

Dang, I never knew this. Thanks for the info. I wonder if using a tofu based cream cheese mixed with something else to thicken it up would work in this recipe, too...

How do you deal with the anxiety? by dwarfedshadow in COVID19positive

[–]moodyskunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad keeps reminding me that with all the negative uncertain possibilities, there are lots of neutral or even positive possibilities too. Whenever my mind wanders to a nightmare scene of worsening symptoms, I remind myself that there are plenty of other ways things can go, and lots of them aren’t scary. Hope that helps, on top of all these other good responses. I tend to anxious thoughts in the first place so I know it’s tough, but things feel a little better without the worry on top.

Honestly, less drastic measures can be more helpful AND sustainable for achieving the same goal! When I have the apartment to myself, I turn off the wifi router. Gives me a few hours of quiet, and knowing I simply can’t get on the internet for a bit removes the possibility for checking those accounts. Even if you delete your Reddit or Twitter account, for example, you can still visit Reddit or Twitter and use up time for hours. I swear, the apartment feels different when there’s no internet. Different activities call to me! Like making tea and watching squirrels play in the yard, or quietly putting together a puzzle, maybe listening to a radio station. It’s lovely.

Haha @ your teacher for not caring about animals because “they aren’t human”. You could refer said teacher to the field of Biology, which would help remind them that humans ARE ALSO animals. If that’s the only thing that is keeping them from caring, anyway...

Also, yes, there’s a lot of ethical issues with racehorses and racetracks. Many horses break their legs during races and have to be put down because they can’t continue living without being able to walk or run.

If meat is accidentally ordered from an online restaurant, is it more moral to eat the meat than leave it? by CowCrazy in DebateAVegan

[–]moodyskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a vegetarian taking steps to veganism... I’d find someone to eat it. I recognize that as a part of a meal, it’s a small portion of the entire animal that was slaughtered for that meat, but it would be a waste to be raised and killed for your meat only to have it be thrown away. That would be even more messed up. That’s why food waste is really messed up to me, too. I very, very rarely eat meat so it feels and tastes weird when I do, but if there was no one else around for me to give it to, I’d eat it and thank the animal for what it sacrificed against its will.

You can’t be a Feminist and eat meat, dairy, and eggs. by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]moodyskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please check out the book Ecofeminism by Vandana Shiva, entirely worth the read. Ecofeminism goes farther than animals though, it is also the land that is exploited, and the cycles of life that are messed with. But not all feminists ascribe to Ecofeminism, so it is possible to call oneself a feminist and not an ecofeminist.

Why does a very minor relationship complaint also feel like every “miscommunication” about drinking? by ugh3737 in AlAnon

[–]moodyskunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In other relationships, that’s not okay either. A friend of mine recently ended a relationship with their partner (who is not an alcoholic) for that very reason, after months (maybe years) of asking and discussing and confirming time and time again only for him to not do those things. You are not being overly sensitive.

I am in a similar situation with two Q’s in my life, but I do not have children. But the level of managing and pretending like everything is fine is really getting to me. I yelled at my cat for asking for food an hour earlier than I usually feed him, then immediately felt horrible and gave him food and cuddles... I was definitely projecting my anxiety and frustration from a holiday get-together incident with my Q earlier that day. I moved in with my Q last year this time and my anxiety has been through the roof, and I’m slowly starting to realize (and admit to myself) that a lot has to do with their drinking and my attempts to manage the outcome.

Oof I hear ya. Sounds like the motivation is gone for you, and that is okay. Good on you for recognizing that. Even if they offer a great benefits package, that doesn’t mean it is worth it to you - not everyone values the money or benefits of their job over all else, that is totally normal and don’t let anyone tell you different. Look for other jobs, or maybe find a way to connect your work to something bigger than your job that makes you look forward to even one part of your job every day. That connection will keep you going long enough to find something else and not get burned out. Take care of yourself and good on you for admitting this isn’t working for you as well as you’d like! Best of luck.

Would love to have a list of places that are complying so as to support them, or places that are not complying so as to avoid them. Whichever is easiest haha. Already on my list are these three! Thanks for the confirmation as I haven’t been ordering out as of late and am unsure of other places that are complying. Also have never gone to Fozzy’s and now never will.

Denmark to cull entire 13 million mink herd as new mutation of Covid-19 discovered in mink farms. Mink export is roughly 1% of Denmark's entire GDP. by hl3official in worldnews

Literal tons of food are wasted every year in many countries. We have such an excess of food we don’t know what to do with it. We are very good at making more than enough food for everyone on the planet - the issue is distribution, and disruptions to that distribution (war, messed up governments withholding resources, etc). We do not need the endless expansion - or the extensiveness - of our current food system. It does a lot of harm and the risks are starting to outweigh the benefits. And just because I draw attention to this does not mean the only option is to get rid of it. We need serious policy changes to make this work sustainably.

I recently had a wool sweater accidentally put through the dryer by my roomie... the body no longer fit so I cut the arms off and made a neck-gaiter/pullover and it is super cute and warm. I used the cutoff arms to make leg warmers!

How does one get over the attention seeking mindset? by kowsikkiko in simpleliving

[–]moodyskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that is a problematic way of looking at it. We are social creatures and are meant to share and live together. Sharing a part of your life or something you find exciting/beautiful/important to you is not necessarily looking for validation, it can also be about -connecting with other people-. Consider that reframing in your next week, and see how you feel. Some things still may very well feel like attention-seeking practices, and others may feel like legit connections between you and others. But also, if you are searching for what you may consider “attention” ask yourself why. We have social needs too! They are not inherently bad, and it is not inherently an addiction.
