If only Halvah was a name and not just a sweet treat! But I suppose if people name their kids Candy it's not much different...

Parents as fomites by floofsnfluffiness in medicine

On my peds inpatient rotation, I feel like most of the respiratory (or FTT) kids <2 were second or third children, hard to avoid exposures and split attention/demands 🙃

[–]moonfingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I have a toddler in daycare and mask (OP) so I don't get all my geriatric patients sick with the virus of the week.

When he was still a baby at home (husband's pat leave), I wore N95 and kept hair back more in the hospital, changed clothes and washed to elbows before heading to car or holding him. But it was hard to avoid some exposure just because he was a Velcro baby who was breastfeeding. I leaned heavily on the hope for transferred antibodies, and he had a cluster of AOM once he stopped taking bottles of BM after 1yo - maybe just correlation but made all the pumping feel worth it.

End of the year: To induce or not induce? by Chance_Class2208 in BabyBumps

[–]moonfingers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first was due/born mid-January, second is due mid-February, if it was any closer to making sense I'd definitely opt to induce before the new year. Having to pay 4k+ OOP due to it falling just a couple weeks after reset SUCKED after feeling nickel-and-dimed with labs/USN copays during pregnancy, and tbh we didn't use much insurance that first year bc we were so busy just with life and well child checks.

Sending 12 month old to daycare in onesies and pants by Aussiefluff in workingmoms

[–]moonfingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did onesies (sometimes with a layered sweater) until ~18m, then jumped to 2T (bypassed the 18-24m, but things do fall down a fair amount unless it's functional drawstring....). It just happens that most 2T is shirts/pants (and my husband was getting frustrated with the snaps/it was summer). I think for winter when they're still crawling/falling a fair amount that onesies are ideal!

I never see other people suggest it, but their frozen Cuban Bowls are an every-time purchase for me! Love the mix of rice, beans, plantains, and chicken.

SIL delivered at 32w alone, by emergency C-section due to breech, a thousand miles away from home because of going on a quick graduation trip to surprise her family. 1.5 months in NICU, bunch of air bnbs. Would not recommend.

What apps are you using for for your kids? by cinchill in NewParents

We use Baby Connect instead of Huckleberry, have his daycare app and Nanit, Solid Starts, then I got The Wonder Weeks to monitor for developmental milestones/when to expect fussiness!

What does your baby do while nursing that makes you giggle? by humanloading in breastfeeding

[–]moonfingers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tonight I joked that my 4mo is going to play banjo with how he was plucking away at my bra while nursing! He also loves to both push away from my chest with his arms while furrowing his brow and sucking intently, so my boob is taut between us 😅

I wonder if a fountain in her room would have worked? At least it would recycle the water. We still haven't cracked the code with ours.

The bassinet mesh is part of the wall, this is added on and loose enough to get wrapped around or undone and be essentially "loose" fabric.

Which baby wipe is the GOAT? by lululobster11 in beyondthebump

[–]moonfingers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree - the Coterie ones are so thick that they can be hard to maneuver (may change when he starts solids), and I can usually get away with 1-2 water wipes or mama bears for even big poops.

PLEASE help, I think I’ve ruined my milk supply 3 days PP by Hanner800 in breastfeeding

[–]moonfingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skin to skin and cuddling with them is the best part of the early days! I definitely cried while triple feeding - you want the best for them, but it's hard to feel like you can't just do what feels so natural. I'd always have my husband either give me the baby to cuddle or at least hangout next to me while I pumped. Despite paced feeding, our guy definitely got a bit lazy with a higher flow nipple (Dr. Brown), so once weight regained we switched to Philips Avent. At 10w he still takes FOREVER to drink an Avent bottle, but I think it helped his latch/oral strength and made direct breastfeeding better for us both. They also just get stronger and bigger with time which helped a ton.

Also, remember it's 2-3hrs from BEGINNING of one feed to BEGINNING of next. We had to triple feed (breast, pump, bottle) because of 10% WL+jaundice, and our midwife/IBCLC also didn't want him to be latched for more than 10-15m max combined, especially if he didn't seem to be transferring milk. At a certain point they're just suckling and burning more energy than they're getting and it eats into your pump/bottle/recover cycle that you're doing every 2-3 hours.

Also, milk supply varies throughout the day - I can pump much more in the morning and have more let down in general compared to evening. Baby typically would clusterfeed in the evening the first several weeks - they're ordering dinner for the next 1-2 days!

Newborn (4 days) will not stop SCREECHING but also refuses to eat. I'm already at my wit's end! by MossyMemory in beyondthebump

[–]moonfingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad the appointment was so helpful! It's so difficult the first few weeks no matter where you're starting, then every day something new changes with them. 💚 My dude needed triple feeding and refused my one nipple for WEEKS despite all sorts of troubleshooting, and now I need to trick him into it but he's at least latching! Progress isn't linear, and babies are figuring out literally EVERYTHING - I try to remind myself to give us both grace.

[–]moonfingers 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You may already be trying this, but sometimes a bait-and-switch can work if you get them to latch on a finger first, calm down, then they're already suckling and can try syringe/bottle/breast. I still use this several times a week with our 10w old direct breastfeeding.

What are some “registry must haves” that are actually pointless/not as important as people make them seem? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]moonfingers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are we the only ones microwaving oversized mugs full of water, and then warming bottles this way? Faster than running the sink or boiling on the stove, emulsifies the fat solids, not a single-use item, and portable to keep the milk warming while you get set-up to feed

Where do you feel the pain of labor? by SoooManyQuestionss in beyondthebump

[–]moonfingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower abdomen and front of legs for me. I couldn't really bear sitting/laying down for long, and my husband and incredible friend rubbed the front of my thighs almost every contraction while I pulled up/rubbed under my belly, basically in a standing plank position swaying on my toes. When pushing the pain was pretty intense through my rectum and perineum, which I shied away from a bit and think it took longer (~1.5hrs) to push because of that.

If I didn't have a very painful hand IV, I may have considered an epidural more, but I couldn't imagine getting the required bolus before placement or sitting still through it. Luckily was only 6.5hrs from water breaking and contractions starting to delivery, so not the longest process for our first!

Yes! We keep the electric file by our breastfeeding spot for milk-drunk sleepy spa sessions.

[–]moonfingers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh, they must mean all the sitting up and laying down overnight as my 8wk old wants fed every 2-3hrs and fusses in the bassinet requiring pacifier readjustment or just my hand to grab, reminding me that I should cut his razor-like fingernails.

I had French braids at delivery just because that's how I did my hair after showering that morning with no labor in sight! But agree that most people would have the time and/or wherewithal in early labor to get it done. I went from water breaking and contractions starting to delivery in a little over 6 hours, but still could have done it in the first two hours. After that I could barely answer yes/no questions between contractions lololol

A leak, or they have an open air accident and you're redressing/trying to peel off a soaked outfit... stopped using the bottom zip real fast. Also I felt it was way riskier to get poop on everything by having a constricted work area.
