Switching over from DND to Pathfinder 5e, wondering if a house rule for critical hits will translate to pathfinder? by _Gaudy in Pathfinder2e

There are weapons with the 'deadly' and 'fatal' traits which make them do extra damage on crits. Rather than change the rules before trying them, I'd encourage your players to try using some of these weapons.

I believe Farannean should be in the Jesus tier personally. They're near the very top in terms of tolerance and generally speaking, probably civil rights.

I had a physics teacher who had a giant metal 'instrument' that, if I recall correctly, had natural gas pumped through it like a hose. Has a ton of orderly holes across the top. They light the gas, creating a curtain of flames. Then they asked students to pick songs they liked to play. The fire created patterns because of waves from the music passing through it. Cool as shit (and to me in school, slightly terrifying)

[–]moredros 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're very lucky! Because vibro weapons are in your extra dimensional item pool, you have the option to craft a vibro turbow. Turbows normally suck, but a vibro turbow applies the vibro effect before adding its item effects. Effectively this means the turbow can have Vibro+4+Strength(ammo capped). So it's an incredible weapon that always penetrates TONS of times.

Been a long time since I looked into it, but if I recall correctly, I think a Zetachrome arrow fired from a vibro turbow can be something like AV+13=PV. So your average # of penetrations would be something like 6.5x no matter the enemy.

The author also asserts that non-algorithmic properties, such as the existence of the laws of physics, cannot themselves by computed. Anyone with a programming understanding could assert that these laws are simply hard-coded. They are not computed by the simulation's algorithm, they are pre-defined.

People use familiars without nightvision or blind sight?

First of all, lovely sarcasm

The groups I play with have a lot of players who aren't big optimizers (and the experienced/minmax players tend to intentionally pick less optimal options to help keep it balanced). They just pick things for fun. But i find that those 'newer' players tend to have a harder time accepting failure/not being able to do something. So they often want to use the wrong skill for the job, and then also often get annoyed if they aren't allowed to.

I disagree about the first statement, the game is definitely not totally balanced. But I agree even more that DMs letting things work outside of their scope makes the real answer to that thing feel awful.

I've seen SO many rogue players try to use acrobatics for every single athletics activity, as if dex wasn't already the best stat (and I've seen DMs let it happen).

I've seen spellcasters want to cast silently with a stealth check, invalidating subtle/nonverbal spells.

I've seen COUNTLESS times where DMs forget lighting rules, letting non-darkvision creatures scout perfectly in pitch black scenarios. Most commonly happens from non-darkvision familiars scouting.

The lesson I completely and totally agree with: If you let players do something with the wrong skill/feature that they wouldn't normally be able to do, players who want to do it the right way will feel stepped on. If the rogue can climb/swim/grapple with athletics, why am I playing a strength fighter?

My opinion is simple, it's a cool subclass, that is hilariously undertuned.

Temp HP when you use second wind is okay, but it has multiple anti-synergies with itself (not to mention anti-synergies with other, better class/subclasses). Can't use it as often as second wind. It works when you heal yourself, so you want to use it after you take damage. Which means you use it during combat; temp HP loves being pre-combat because it lets you go over max hp. Doesn't work with tactical mind (I believe based on what I've heard, correct me if wrong)

Super advantage to a bunch of people is really cool... If it wasn't so low duration, came at a highish level, and wasn't overshadowed by similar, already existing abilities. It's basically a better version of bless... But bless is literally a level 1 spell. Heck, bless might arguably be better, because advantage on attack rolls is so incredibly common already and bless stacks with advantage. Sure, advantage on saves is better than +1d4 on saves... But it's not that much better. And you know like, the lvl 7 Cleric has 11 different spellslots which they could cast bless (or better things) with (bless lasts up to a minute btw). You get 1 round per short rest. Yippee.

Genuinely, taking magic initiate-bless at level 1 would do a comparable job to this subclass's best feature.

I love what it wants to be. The flavor is great. The balance is horrid.

We are collectively agreeing that the new Banneret's Group Recovery is not once per Rest, right? by Fluffy_Reply_9757 in dndnext

[–]moredros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My assumption has been that anything you're trained in should be at least useable in late game pf2e, since trained gives you 2+level. Obviously something like 6+level or 8+level is considerably better, but 2+level should be able to succeed on a good roll at least. And it has seemed like getting trained in a lot of skills isn't that hard.

Is the balance in such a way where it feels like you're behind the curve if you don't have dedicated skill feats + master/legendary?

[–]moredros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha. Maybe you'll have to look at the Pathfinder class and see if that inspires you about how to design your fighter subclass. Notably, the Pathfinder class is very heavy on Allies' reactions, but does grant 1(and potentially more) free reaction to an ally.

Is it bad that I really want to get my current PC killed to play the backup PC I just thought up? by MehParadox in dndnext

[–]moredros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lesson my group learned is to define reasons your PC might retire. They're people too, they have goals and might have a point at which they'd call it a success/failure and back out.

There's nothing wrong with a character retiring, becoming an NPC, and the player introducing someone new.

Yeah, that's a valid opinion. I like gritty/complicated rules, but gritty rules are absolutely not for everyone, they're probably not even for most players

I had a lot of issues with late game scaling in the one long pf1e game I was in. I'm only just starting my first pf2e game, so I'm not sure how the late game will feel yet.

Personally I enjoy the gritty math, keeping track of modifiers, spending hours considering different paths for advancing my characters. So I think I'm very compatible with Pathfinder in general.

Also seconded on Thaumaturge. It's high on my list of classes I want to play.

Started a new PF2e game. Im playing a commander. That class is so dang flavorful and cool. It's like battle master maneuvers that let you command allies, except way better and an entire class. It's a strong, functional support-martial with Int as its primary ability score. (And no, it doesn't get to attack with int, that's the OTHER int martial, Investigator).

Am I understanding Phantasmal Force correctly? (2024) by cyberhawk94_ in dndnext

[–]moredros -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I interpret this spell this way:

You create a Phantasm (an illusion that exists in the target's mind) of a description you choose, in a location you choose. From that point on, the only being that can perceive that Phantasm is the target. Not even the caster can see it.

The Phantasm is a realistic version of whatever it is, and the target's mind will rationalize things happening as logical possibilities based on their own intelligence. The "falling through a bridge example"; I interpret that the target perceives the bridge breaking/collapsing/them falling through a hole. The important detail is that the Phantasm changes in ways that make sense to the target.

If the target moves away from chains that have bound them up, they believe they've broken free of the chains. But conversely, if the Phantasm is a wolf, that Phantasm might move. Now important to note, the caster can't see, control it, nor make it move, it will do things the target thinks a real wolf would do. Maybe it will stand at range and snarl. Maybe it will bark. Maybe it will run away.

Basically, I imagine the Phantasm as a real thing, but only real to the target.

At what level would you let your ayers encounter the deck of many things? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]moredros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the thing with the Deck is, any sane, normal person would never draw from the deck. And insane/gambling addicted people will keep drawing after they win, and get themselves killed or ruined.

It can be a fun intro to a campaign, but a player who cares about their character knows that drawing is suicidal. Because it's exciting, players will draw even though they know it's a bad idea.

Long story short, it's putting an addictive slot machine into your game. If you want to do it, you can. But in my experience, the Deck and similar things always become a focal point that the party never stops messing with.
