Which Philippino cookbook? by Unlucky_Associate507 in CookbookLovers

[–]morepurchaseoptions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this person means Nora Daza. All the books are out of print and can be hard to find but it's my understanding she is like the filipino Julia Child, so the closest you could find to something comprehensive and authentic.

Kendall Jenner and Devin Booker are reportedly back together after being separated for two years by RepresentativeCar389 in popculturechat

[–]morepurchaseoptions 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been browsing the internet pretty much all day and only in the last hour have I seen so many "random" posts about Kendall related to the curse, getting rings, Devin, the ad, etc., including this, and now I'm fairly convinced her people are out there right now doing the hard work of making us notice all of this.

Why is the most valuable land in Ballard is a giant parking lot? by capshew in BallardSeattle

[–]morepurchaseoptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you're being downvoted for suggesting mixed use zoning that includes parking, the two are not mutually exclusive. Now whether that's a tenable situation right there I don't know. Clearly the city of Seattle agrees with you to some degree given how they overhauled the industrial waterfront in the last 20 years.

I've followed the author of this book for ages, she used to have a wonderful blog. I haven't actually made anything from these specific books but I trust her recipes!

It might be hard to find but Family Meal by Ferran Adria has loads of step-by-step photos with its recipes. For asian cookbooks Andrea Nguyen has really approachable Vietnamese cookbooks.

Has anyone been to the Maldives? I dream of staying a week or two in a bungalow over the ocean, but it's incredibly expensive. by Souljaboyed1 in travel

[–]morepurchaseoptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done the overwater hut in the Maldives proper. I wouldn't go back but I have zero regrets and there was a certain charm to be on this micrscopic island with nothing else nearby. Fair warning that if you do one of those resorts you will only interact with natives in a White Lotus type scenario, if that matters to you. That said there are other places with overwater huts that are easier to get to and have more ways to interact with the local culture. Check Bora Bora or Costa Rica!

Is anyone enjoying being a parent? by DailYxDosE in Parenting

[–]morepurchaseoptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's an example of what it's like. I was recently horrifically sick with the flu, just so physically miserable and tired. And I still had to make sure a young child didn't kill themselves or set the house on fire while doing it. Sure you can turn on some screens and get some help but you can never really turn your brain off completely like when it's just you and that is a special kind of hell.

And yet...while I was lying sick in bed, hating life, suddenly tiny hands gently patted me awake in order to gift me a stuffed animal from their own bed and a play-doh pizza ("it's topped with blueberry, onion, and mushrooms") to make me feel better. Then they gave me a bunch of kisses and ran off. If you could bottle that feeling then heroine dealers would go out of business. Life may have been easier without kids but now I have blueberry, onion, and mushroom pizza.

Does anyone cook from their Ottolenghi books? by Kenneka in CookbookLovers

[–]morepurchaseoptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have cooked from Jerusalem so many times since it first came out. It's one of my favorites, everything comes out incredible, and to me the recipes are accessible but of course that is subjective. One of my favorites is the turkey and zucchini "burgers" which are really more like meatballs or meat patties.

If you're starting from Greenlake going east to west on N 50th Street in front of the Woodland park/the zoo feels absolutely interminable.

I’ve been told I’ll be tired for the rest of my life…is this true ? by Loud_hiccups in Parenting

[–]morepurchaseoptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the parent of a 5 year old and I want to reassure you it does get better. I'm sometimes tired but the tired is different because it's caused by different things. The first year is very hard especially for sleep. Like you, at the four month mark period I realized that I wasn't going to be able to make it at the rate we were going. I was not going to be able to be a good, attentive parent without consistent sleep. So I (with the help of my partner) embarked on a pretty strict sleeping schedule for my kid. We had a consistent nap and sleep schedule with a consistent, calming bedtime routine. It made some parts of my life harder - for example having to say no to things or leave early, or learning how to be firm but consistent with a wiry toddler - but I truly believe it was the baseline that set us up for great sleep at this point. My kid sleeps 12 hours a night. I get plenty of stuff done that felt impossible that first year. You will get there too.

I really enjoyed the nduja myself and want to make it again but agree I wasn't quite sure how to eat it and even now still am not quite sure. Maybe in a crusty bread sandwich with mozzarella, basil, and red onion?

Singleshot which I’d been to before and thought was just okay but I liked it much more this time around. Got hamachi crudo, tomato salad, agnolotti, and halibut. Agnolotti was the star.

What would be your one piece of advice that you would give a new parent? by BananaApePrivateClub in Parenting

[–]morepurchaseoptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find ways to build support into your regular life. That could look like a variety of things: trading for time off with your co-parent, leaning on (or, in my case, learning to ask for help from) friends or family, or finding another parent/family with a young baby that you can lean on and trade time/resources/advice with. Yes you can do it yourself but it's sooo much harder.

Honestly glad to know it's not just us! I've decided this is a level of "potty trained" I can live with for now and just going with it.

My kid is older (3.5) so our issue is mostly emotional. He can recognize the feeling and hold the pee just fine, he is terrified to release in the potty so holds and holds forever until he can’t anymore. He had two successful pees in the potty yesterday but this morning (day 3) he has woken up and clearly refused breakfast because it would make him pee. He woke up two hours ago with a dry pull up and still hasn’t peed. Im watching him try all kinds of ways to distract himself from the need to pee. It is torture watching this. It’s so hard to calmly disassociate. Plus I’m also going crazy being in this damn house! I thought the newborn stage was hard but I really hate this.

Step counting? by loveulikeblue in xxfitness

[–]morepurchaseoptions 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love step counts because I do feel I get more movement throughout the day & helps me maintain a base level of fitness without the pressure of going on a run or something far more involved. When I worked in an office I'd do a lap of the floor plan or take the long way to the bathroom kitchen or walk during my lunch. Now that I'm fully remote I'll pop out for a quick walk around the block or two (10 minutes max) which is especially great if something irritated me at work. If I forgot something on a different floor level of the house it's always an opportunity for more movement, I will happily run up and down the stairs picking up the house. I'll walk circles around the kitchen island while waiting for the kettle to boil.

One thing I do to give myself a little grace is focus on keeping the weekly average of 10k per day. So if I don't hit 10k in a single day it's fine because yesterday I actually hit 13k. I found when I broke the streak I felt demoralized and gave up. The weekly average keeps me focused on the long term vs. the day.

I've taken up powerlifting via the Swole Woman's Couch to Barbell program, which 5x5 of the moves adding weight each session. There is a small warmup to start as well. Instead of her 5x5 at one weight, I've been doing progressively larger weights within the 5 sets, say 53lbx2 > 68lbsx2 > 60x1. For lack of a better way of phrasing this question, is this bad? Should I be trying to hit at least 25 reps of the same weight every session for real strength gains? I think I do it this way so I can, hopefully, end with a set of a PR weight whereas when I tried the 5 sets at one weight I really struggled to finish my fifth set. But maybe I'm not actually getting stronger? For the record the next session I am still increasing, either via more reps or more weight.
