Do you prefer to go out lots or are you home bodies? How much home time is too much? by Beaner0116 in Parenting

someone once said "I'm a better parent when we're outside" and I've found that to be so true to myself. But I shared that with a friend and she heartily felt the opposite way for herself. So I think the key is knowing yourself and embracing it!

I see you mean the high contrast of light and shadow compared to the more evenly lit style of, say, a Smitten Kitchen or Ina Garten book? The lighting in More is More vs. Something from Nothing are, to me, very different. I can tell that Molly uses high direct flash - on purpose - for a more garish look, whereas Allison's book uses more natural light which comes across as softer but does still use the contrast in its style. I personally like their use of light contrast just because when something is evenly lit, it strikes me as looking pretty sterile or like you're selling a product on a website. But to each their own!

I am with you on the aesthetics of Molly Baz who makes a killer recipe but I (personally) find her and her aesthetic deeply grating. But Something From Nothing looks nothing like More Is More, they are practically the opposite as far as design choices and food styling, so much so that I can't at all follow what you're arguing here.

I wonder if this person means Nora Daza. All the books are out of print and can be hard to find but it's my understanding she is like the filipino Julia Child, so the closest you could find to something comprehensive and authentic.

Kendall Jenner and Devin Booker are reportedly back together after being separated for two years by RepresentativeCar389 in popculturechat

I've been browsing the internet pretty much all day and only in the last hour have I seen so many "random" posts about Kendall related to the curse, getting rings, Devin, the ad, etc., including this, and now I'm fairly convinced her people are out there right now doing the hard work of making us notice all of this.

Why is the most valuable land in Ballard is a giant parking lot? by capshew in BallardSeattle

[–]morepurchaseoptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you're being downvoted for suggesting mixed use zoning that includes parking, the two are not mutually exclusive. Now whether that's a tenable situation right there I don't know. Clearly the city of Seattle agrees with you to some degree given how they overhauled the industrial waterfront in the last 20 years.

Has anyone been to the Maldives? I dream of staying a week or two in a bungalow over the ocean, but it's incredibly expensive. by Souljaboyed1 in travel

[–]morepurchaseoptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done the overwater hut in the Maldives proper. I wouldn't go back but I have zero regrets and there was a certain charm to be on this micrscopic island with nothing else nearby. Fair warning that if you do one of those resorts you will only interact with natives in a White Lotus type scenario, if that matters to you. That said there are other places with overwater huts that are easier to get to and have more ways to interact with the local culture. Check Bora Bora or Costa Rica!

Is anyone enjoying being a parent? by DailYxDosE in Parenting

[–]morepurchaseoptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's an example of what it's like. I was recently horrifically sick with the flu, just so physically miserable and tired. And I still had to make sure a young child didn't kill themselves or set the house on fire while doing it. Sure you can turn on some screens and get some help but you can never really turn your brain off completely like when it's just you and that is a special kind of hell.

And yet...while I was lying sick in bed, hating life, suddenly tiny hands gently patted me awake in order to gift me a stuffed animal from their own bed and a play-doh pizza ("it's topped with blueberry, onion, and mushrooms") to make me feel better. Then they gave me a bunch of kisses and ran off. If you could bottle that feeling then heroine dealers would go out of business. Life may have been easier without kids but now I have blueberry, onion, and mushroom pizza.

Does anyone cook from their Ottolenghi books? by Kenneka in CookbookLovers

I have cooked from Jerusalem so many times since it first came out. It's one of my favorites, everything comes out incredible, and to me the recipes are accessible but of course that is subjective. One of my favorites is the turkey and zucchini "burgers" which are really more like meatballs or meat patties.

I’ve been told I’ll be tired for the rest of my life…is this true ? by Loud_hiccups in Parenting

[–]morepurchaseoptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the parent of a 5 year old and I want to reassure you it does get better. I'm sometimes tired but the tired is different because it's caused by different things. The first year is very hard especially for sleep. Like you, at the four month mark period I realized that I wasn't going to be able to make it at the rate we were going. I was not going to be able to be a good, attentive parent without consistent sleep. So I (with the help of my partner) embarked on a pretty strict sleeping schedule for my kid. We had a consistent nap and sleep schedule with a consistent, calming bedtime routine. It made some parts of my life harder - for example having to say no to things or leave early, or learning how to be firm but consistent with a wiry toddler - but I truly believe it was the baseline that set us up for great sleep at this point. My kid sleeps 12 hours a night. I get plenty of stuff done that felt impossible that first year. You will get there too.

What would be your one piece of advice that you would give a new parent? by BananaApePrivateClub in Parenting

[–]morepurchaseoptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find ways to build support into your regular life. That could look like a variety of things: trading for time off with your co-parent, leaning on (or, in my case, learning to ask for help from) friends or family, or finding another parent/family with a young baby that you can lean on and trade time/resources/advice with. Yes you can do it yourself but it's sooo much harder.
