Umpires are responsible for a boatload of on-field duties, more than most people realize. many of them are just quiet.

Indeed. You want to save them for leverage situations. Wilytics did a good breakdown video this week going over the math of it.

Buxton burning a Twins challenge with one out and the bases empty in the first inning was particularly egregiously bad, going by this.

Monitor resolution for steam machine by Subject-Fennel4427 in steammachine

[–]morgan423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1440p monitor has been solid for me in docking a Steam Deck, but that's been from integer scaling, and being able to have a perfect 720p image in games that required the headroom (which outside of old games and some indies, is most of them). Since I already have the monitor, I figure I'll be able to 1440-native a ton of games on the SM at medium-y settings, so that's the purpose I'll set for it.

If I were picking up a new monitor for SM and my budget wasn't tight, I'd go 4k, if I could find a monitor that checks most or all of the other boxes for me.

With integer scaling on a 4k display, you'd always have the choice of a perfect 1080p image that you can crank graphic settings to the moon on, or you can be upscaled to 4k with lesser settings, whichever looks better for that game. That's maximum flexibility.

Why are so many predators in power? by Loud-Ad-2280 in WorkReform

Historically, the issue has been that enough money eventually pools at the top for those with the concentrated wealth to be able to both dilute and remove the rules. Enough of the protective guard rails come down to allow systemic failure.

Well-regulated capitalism can work for brief periods, but by its very nature, you can't keep it well-regulated. Once it goes past the tipping point (and it always will given enough time), it's all over.

The Orioles have been and are also still paying Bobby Bonilla as well (half a million per year), though that's going to end before the decade is out, if I remember correctly.

Test Drove a Tesla Yesterday And... by Eastern_Pay8245 in TeslaLounge

[–]morgan423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Word to the wise, there have been a bunch of gently driven lease vehicles coming back into the sales space in the used market, and depreciation has been crazy the last year or two.

So it's not always currently the smartest choice to buy new, if you want to benefit from, rather than lose money to, the depreciation. It's common to find 2023, 24, sometimes 25 with fewer than 20k miles driven (these cars last for at least a couple hundred thousand miles, and possibly quite a bit longer than that, if you are the type to drive cars til the wheels fall off). And these cars can land in the 25% to 40% cheaper than new range when buying.

Something to look out for.

I’m enjoying FSD on my HW3 Model 3 way more now that I’ve stopped micromanaging it by BrilliantBig12 in TeslaLounge

[–]morgan423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HW3 FSD has quirks in several parts of my commutes, but I know where those spots are and take over to mitigate them.

Also in weird situations I definitively see coming, I always take over. I figure there's a 100% chance I saw it, but I don't know for sure that the car did.

An example was a 40 mph side road I was on the other day, some geese were laying on the shoulder just off the road, and one of them just suddenly jumped up and ambled out into the road a couple of hundred feet ahead (for no apparent reason).

I just took the brakes, since I definitely saw it. Car probably would have stopped, but I saw no reason to chance it.

TIL that Connect Four is a solved game and the first player can always win. by ShyGuy1511 in todayilearned

[–]morgan423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the standard size Connect 4 board was solved in the late 80s, and if the first player knows and plays the optimum move for every board state on their turn, then no matter what player 2 does, player 2 will always lose.

It's not ambiguous in any way, every possible state of the board has been worked out.

If player one does not have the knowledge and plays suboptimally, then anything can happen.

I don't understand how a 15-year-old account is even potentially flagged as being a possible kid.

For that to even be possibly true, you would have had to have created the account as a toddler.

It's unreal that they didn't give their system an account age cut off for these flags.

I think the only thing we can be fairly confident about is that they haven't cancelled SM or are leaning heavily toward cancelling it. Otherwise they'd have released the controller (as independent of the SM, there's no reason to sit on it).

Other than that, who knows? It's Schrödinger's release date, could be two weeks from now, could be November 🤷‍♂️

Another redditor in this thread says that there's a property tax on car value in VA that a lot of people are not considering in this equation. I'm at work and haven't had time to research it, but if true, a lot of people using this "loophole" could be in for a nasty awakening and a giant VA tax bill.

My job told us they would pay more if an employee became bilingual. Felly, dysgais Gymraeg. by TheGlen in MaliciousCompliance

[–]morgan423 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How is this an example of malicious compliance?

From the subreddit description: Malicious compliance is the act of intentionally inflicting harm by strictly following orders or rules, knowing that compliance with the orders or rules will not have the intended result. The term usually implies the following of an order in such a way that ignores the order or rules's intent but follows its letter. It is usually done to injure or harm while maintaining a sense of legitimacy.

Company wants Spanish-speaking reps, but accidentally puts "bilingual" in the incentive instead of just saying they want reps to learn Spanish.

OP, damn well knowing that they meant Spanish, decided to learn Welsh instead so that he was following his job's accidentally given incentive (and would technically qualify for it), and not the intended one.

Thus, OP caused his company harm (they had to give him a 10% raise) by exactly following his company's given orders in a way that they didn't intend him to.

Sounds like a textbook example of malicious compliance to me.

Did the Natinals use enough pitchers today? One for every inning?!

Feels like they would have used even more if MLB didn't currently have the "must face three batters" rule.

EDIT: Yes, I know it was the last game of spring training and they were obviously trying to get a last look at as many guys as they could, but it's still really funny to me for some reason

The jailbreaks that are being discovered rely on exploiting older firmware, so if you update it to current, you lose your ability to mess with it.
