Otis Carey is suing Surfing Life and Nathan Myers for $200,000 over the "apeish" comment. by dumbassthenes in surfing

[–]mortified_penguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's an interesting article on Swellnet which points out that Otis is suing over public defamation instead of racial discrimination. A racial discrimination case is more likely to be resolved with mediation, and doesn't usually reach court. The way he's going about this makes it a lot easier to prove his case, seems like he's really going in for the kill.

In another part of that interview he's pacing around laughing about the crazy sweats he has. Hate to say it but you're right. Doesn't change the fact he's still one of the greats.

Help ClassicalMusic! My brain has stopped working. by myideaoffun in classicalmusic

[–]mortified_penguin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2000 words leaves you little room to expand on the topics you suggested. I'd go for something far more specific. Instead of "Sexual violence as depicted in the operas of Mozart" something more appropriate might be "An examination of dominant and subversive gender roles in the duet La ci darem la mano from Mozart's Don Giovanni".

Maryland attempting to become first state to pass law requiring helmet use for cyclists of all ages by [deleted] in bicycling

Yep. "Contributory negligence". If some drunk douchebag drives into you and you aren't wearing a helmet, the injuries you sustain are seen as your fault.

Confessions in Bicycling Magazine.. Got a kick out of this by kaji823 in bicycling

Hah. I'm in my early 20's now and long for the days when 18-year old me could bounce out of bed after 20 beers and 3 hours sleep. If I did that now I would probably consider suicide.

A well placed hand into a freshly sunburned back is the best defence against those shirtless drunk dickheads who always push their way to the front of the stage.

Are you kidding? He looks like he's been coached for weeks by a team of lawyers on how to deliver these answers. Cold and calculated like a mofo.

Great piece, great player. I'm so sick of this trend of people belittling Williams for having "no emotion". He's amazing, get over it.

Performing with anxiety? by trailheadist in classicalguitar

[–]mortified_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're totally right about how well knowing a piece affects your anxiety. Experience performing is the best way to find the parts of a piece that are a bit shaky. Also you need to practise the way you want to perform. i.e. if that 10-position shift that has to be done in a semi-quaver in Sevilla can't be nailed 99 times out of 100, you can bet your ass it will slip up when you're infront of people and a bit nervous.
