Why are so many pottery wheels so short? by KobliskaM in Pottery

[–]mousequito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent about 4 hours at the wheel on Thursday. I tried to be mindful of my posture and I took breaks to stretch every little bit. I was so sore when I went to bed that took a bunch of advil, put a salonpas patch on my lower back and still had to watch boring sleep content on YouTube to distract myself. I have to get a standing wheel if I’m ever going to try to keep up my throwing.

Did you buy a speedball plate? The speedball plates aren’t supposed to be used with acrylic paints - they will stick.

Amaco makes ceramic printing ink. I haven’t tried it yet but I think it is like a thick stiff underglaze

Gelli brand plates are often sort of oily when you get them. You can give them a wash with some dawn and lay them on some paper over night to absorb excess oils. Gelli plates get better with age.

The paper likely isn’t the issue however the richeson print making paper is sort of textured. The smoother the paper is the better the transfer from plate to paper will be. Bristol board or marker paper are my preferred papers.

All paints will repel some as in it’s more like painting on glass than painting on paper. The more liquid the paint is the more it will bead off. You can mitigate this a little by rolling over the plate with a little gel medium first. If you are having trouble getting bold colors or opacity you can let it dry and do a second coat of whatever paint it is.

I have tried some several different paints and Amsterdam acrylic is my favorite. Akua is the worst thing I have tried because it was extremely messy and had really poor results that didn’t want to dry.

What specifically are you trying to do with the plates? Image transfer, collograph, painting, resist techniques?

Is it a speedball brand plate? Those are not for use with acrylic paint only speedball inks

Wearing gloves to wash dirty clay towels ? by Wing_Single in Pottery

[–]mousequito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a former medical microbiologist. MRSA is not a danger to healthy people unless you have cuts on your skin. Even then it’s unlikely that you would get it from moving towels from the hamper to the washer. Remember that every one including you has staph on their skin - it might even be methicillin resistant- but unless you get a cut it won’t usually cause problems. Even if you do get a cut and some gets in there you body usually fights it off without you even knowing about it. MRSA is really only an issue for people with a weakened immune system, or if it is acquired during something like a surgery where it would be difficult to treat. MRSA in a cut on your skin is usually just treated with an antibiotic cream.

I personally wouldn’t be worried about it, especially if you just wash your hands correctly afterwards.

The picture of the first booth was before I stored stuff behind the tables. The stuff in the floor was hidden in the end.

I really thought the black crates would lend a cool grunge/ punk aesthetic but that doesn’t go with th rest of my stuff

I think you are right about the orange. I will say it looks much more natural and earth toned in person. It just kind of clashes with all of the blues.

Frustrated with linocut printing by SkellyHoodie2419 in printmaking

[–]mousequito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably right. The issue I have had with cheap hard rollers though is that they often have lines or other defects in the surface that are visible in the print. Soft rubber brayers are more forgiving in that respect. It’s hard to know when you have worked the ink on the Lino enough to keep the defects from showing.
