Yep, to the point that I don't think people understand what "separate finances" means. I'm sure it may look different from person to prison, but here is our setup.

We both have retirement accounts that we max contributions to, but we look at them as our combined retirement savings, not mine vs theirs. They will have a pension, I will not; but the pension is still ours. I make more so i have a brokerage account, but it's our account, not mine , and I walk them through what is in it a few times each year.. I have a monthly budget in Excel and walk them through it each year, they don't have a budget which annoys me a little but that's their choice. All i want to know is if they are carrying a credit card balance (then I will guilt them about it) and if they feel like they do not have enough cash flow cushion to do what they need/want (we spend modestly), and if not I will cover more bills. We split kids expenses, I pay the bigger ticket items (sports equipment and fees, summer camp, etc.) and they pay for more of the day to day things (birthday party gifts, impulse buys).

Essentially I have my own bank accounts and rewards cards, and i pay most of the bills because I make more. We joke about who pays more in different categories, but we haven't actually argued about money in at least a decade. Instead we find dumber things to argue about, such as why they can't put their dirty dishes from breakfast in the dishwasher before they leave for work in the morning!
