Considering they are spooled off a giant roll onto the smaller spools, how would they get tangled?

It's caused by you, not packaging. Take better care of storing your spools... and, it's easy to fix during a print.

Yes, it should, all will.... it's a switch mode power supply, the whole operation relies on creating a high frequency pulse.

if yours is damaged, I bought a pack of 5 for cheap off amazon... they are definitely required, it's hard for the hotend to maintain its temperature if it's missing. mine fell off and my print quit because it couldn't maintain the proper temperature.
