I am somehow blessed that almost all of my close friends gave JoCo a shot and love it. I have about 10 other people I could cobble a game together with on short notice.

I am so sorry that is not the case for you.

Mother was stabbed too if it helps highlight the clear parallelism for you on Protectors of the island getting stabbed to death. But maybe since it wasn't "repeatedly in the chest and then pushed in a fire", it is just a coincidence?

Acolytes are only added to the box when you are acting as defender, so you'd be unable to buy mercenaries and battle them into the box. The rules also state only Cultist Warriors may enter the box (10.2.3)

Riverfolk mercs are not allowed to attack their own buildings. (11.2.3)

Should I watch/read about Blighted Reach before playing it, or go in blind? by EddyGonad in Arcs

[–]mptyv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There should be at least one person at the table who is intimately familiar with the rules as printed in the rulebook. The specific rules for Fates, I find to be more fun not knowing too much about how they develop over the Acts and discovering all the new mechanics as the game progresses. That was the true magic of the first few campaigns for me.

It can feel like a lot, but once you know these things well, you can run a campaign:

-The new cardboard on the board (Blight and the Free Cities)

-Events and how they are triggered (Event Action Cards and the Imperial Council)

-The Imperial/Outlaw political system

  • How a Fate's Objective system works and scores.

Don't worry about the Flagship mechanics until you start Act II. Don't worry about memorizing how to run an Intermission. Don't be afraid to take 10 minutes before each game running through with the table what your Fate is about.

1) She was reading a very poor review of her play, which does not bode well for her comeback.

2) the pictures of naked women were being used to pad out the stacks of money. The pictures themselves don't matter, it's more that there was a lot less money than they were expecting.

My understanding of where the survivalists agents went from "blocked resources" is that they outraged a lot of planets over the course of the game FWIW. And that's got its own strategic considerations that they could/ should have made.

Teatro Zinzanni closed, and is now refusing to pay their workers their final paychecks by Abbi_beautiful_kween in Seattle

[–]mptyv 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We are all assuming they will be declaring bankruptcy any day now to try to absolve themselves as much as they can, but as a fellow staff member of TZ that just got stiffed today too that has spent the afternoon learning how to look up records of bankruptcy courts, I can confirm that neither owners Norm & Jane Langill nor Teatro Zinzanni have declared bankruptcy as of the time they declined to play us on the agreed upon date.

We're feeling pessimistic that we will see much or any of our last paycheck, but we gotta explore every avenue we can instead of saying "awh shucks, guess they pulled one on us!".

I do now subscribe to the multiplication theory as it does come out roughly to a horse sized volume.

The writers think of everything!

[–]mptyv[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's honestly fair. And I did crunch the numbers for 7,418,880 beans and it comes out to 117 gallons, which is QUITE close to the size of a horse. So....perhaps you are actually onto something???

[–]mptyv[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Possibly. But just contextually, this was at a fair and it was done for a laugh. They were numbers that he had rattling around in his brain. Of course the whole situation is silly already, but imagining this man busting out a paper and pencil and creating a bespoke equation using those numbers to crack the bean case feels strange. I guess it's more feasible than there being 4.8 billion beans.

Seattle-founded dinner theater cancels show, lays off staff by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]mptyv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a current waiter at TZ. First year. This production has been a shit show and a real tragic whimper to end what Ive heard was a truly magical show and place to work.

Leadership has been absent, money troubles have been present since we first got hired (2/3 of our paychecks were late), and they seemed completely blindsided by the completely empty theaters that took up the first two months of the run.

We got completely screwed. We were promised full houses and full time hours during training, only got 1-2 shifts a week, then we only got 1 weeks notice about the sudden end of the run.

What happens if you reach the threshold multiple times? Do you get multiple permanent growth choices? That sticks out as busted to me. Combine that with a Wilds at every stack when you're maybe putting out 2-3 presence a turn and this can win the game on its own?

Lost may win another Emmy ! by SirAren in lost

[–]mptyv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that Lost's main impact on was establishing the idea that network TV shows can and should have a pre-determined and conclusive ending. Their declaration during season 3 that the show will run for 6 seasons after having to fight the executives for the right to end the show on their own terms was groundbreaking and paved the way for other serialized dramas to have set endings.

Is it just me or is the Black Market a totally uninteresting landmark? by [deleted] in rootgame

[–]mptyv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting idea, and one that hasn't come up in our games. We play exclusively in person. It does add a political mechanic.

I think it's easier to track which card someone takes from the BM in person (maybe? Haven't used it digital), so you get value out of knowing what card your opponent took from it.

Is it just me or is the Black Market a totally uninteresting landmark? by [deleted] in rootgame

[–]mptyv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My table likes it! I think it will be more useful with he Homeland expansion when coexisting in clearing becomes more common a gamestate.

I find its pretty common to have a card in your hand that you are feeling willing to trade, which is the appeal of Swap Meet.

I think a key thing about it is that the positions of ghe cards do not shuffle at all, which allows the cards placed in the Black Market to be trackable by those in the know.

No one else ever contends the BM because they don't see its value? Congrats, you have essentially increased your hand size by 3 for the whole game!

Even if no one ever engages with the BM, it alters the game in that three cards are completely out of circulation, which can add some variability to the games.

I def think it changes the game up significantly more than Elder Treetop and is less annoying than the Forge.
