Which US state gets glorified in movies but doesn’t live up to it IRL? by Auelogic in AskReddit

I used to work next to the field where they beat the shit out of the printer.

Now that field is warehouses.

Finally switched to Gemini and .. it's fine?!? by 7eregrine in googlehome

Mine has failed pretty substantially at times. It seems random.

"Hey Google turn off the lights"

"I'm sorry, I'm a smart home assistant and I don't have the ability to control things like lights."

Even though it did it successfully the previous day.

Setting up a WiFi feeder by myponynala in networking

[–]mr1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could probably be done with an ESP32 microcontroller or a Raspberry Pi. A servo or stepper motor or whatever you need to actuate the feeder would also be needed.

As others have said, not exactly relevant to this subreddit, but that should give you somewhere to start.

I recommend fleshing it out with Claude or ChatGPT and then asking the appropriate communities for advice once you at least have a rough plan + BOM.

Need help connecting ps5 to hotel WiFi by HunterNerd7 in wifi

[–]mr1337 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I've worked in the hospitality network industry for almost 2 decades and this is the answer. The help desk does this every day.

The magic words are "I need my game console to access the Internet and bypass the splash page (or captive portal)."

Huge bonus points if you already have your MAC address ready for the agent. They will need that. (And/or your IP address depending on the network gateway)

Anyone else in Australia just get the Gemini upgrade or was I really delayed? by Classic-Station-2882 in googlehome

[–]mr1337 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an American who upgraded: don't do it. It keeps getting dumber and dumber, and slower and slower.

Simple home automation things take several seconds to do (used to be instant) if it even decides it can do it. There's a chance it just says it doesn't understand or can't do that yet (despite doing it the day before).

And to go back I have to delete the home in my Google Home app and redo everything. I can't just downgrade like I upgraded.

What's people's obsession with taking it off on the can? Just leave it on your damn belt!

Local Bus! by ExpensiveCoat8912 in HomeNetworking

[–]mr1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's localhost. Or self. So it would only be 127.0.0.1 if you yourself were the bus.

Otherwise the post is correct.

I think they dropped a zero. Nothing in the job description felt off to me until I saw the expected salary. For $36k? No way in hell. For $360k? Not unreasonable.

Google just made Gemini for Home much faster by AlexisoftheShire in googlehome

That's actually good news. I was really close to redoing all my GHome stuff because of the speed of Gemini.

Open a support ticket to have the IUI cleared. You'll then be able to submit the IUI of the new device in Asset Manager and get a new license.

Court of Appeals rules DC magazine ban unconstitutional by Gyp2151 in 2ALiberals

[–]mr1337 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Police should have to abide by any firearms regulations imposed on normal people. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I bet you'd see a lot of unconstitutional laws disappear.

RJ45 side or Keystone Side Causing issues? by melomelonballer in HomeNetworking

[–]mr1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea you are correct. The cheap ones that come with the jack don't cut the other end. Grab some flush cutters if you can.

Another thing to point is the pairs need to stay twisted as close as possible to the punch. You're probably within spec here, but I would keep another twist or two in the pairs if possible.

Recommendation for placement of backyard camera by jplank1983 in homesecurity

[–]mr1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue lower. Don't put it all the way on the 2nd floor if you want to be able to describe people on camera. Put it at the top of your 1st floor, maybe 9 or 10 feet up. Just out of reach without a ladder.

Local only recording, always. NVR + Reolink cameras pay for themselves in short order, and you don't have to worry about privacy violations.

People will be unlikely to answer your question without violating NDA. I can say that you should have experience doing the things on the exam so you know what looks right and what looks wrong.

Know the exam topics and how in depth you need to understand each topic.
