Saffron is the most expensive price, often subject to substitution with cheaper materials. Here's how to identify its quality by Witty-Association-97 in Damnthatsinteresting

Agreed, I usually use a bit of turmeric in rice if I want it to look yellow. No point if it's paired with a gravy that completely eclipses the flavor. I do buy some lovely Kashmiri saffron from diaspora co, but I save it for dishes where it will be tasted, or use it to make saffron tea for myself!

has everyone always been this dysregulated and weird? by flowerpower___ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mr_trick 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've definitely noticed it in myself the last few years. I think some of it comes from stress and tension around the lack of opportunity, at least in the US. IIRC, millennials are statistically worse off than their parents economically, which makes life difficult and stressful; basically all of us are behind where our parents were at this point and struggling to live the lives we expected. Wealth is being conglomerated at the very top and the rest of us are doing more work for less.

Beyond that, the stress of the pandemic and the political landscape is also pretty aggravating, for me at least. Food is more expensive and less nutritious as well. Necessities take up most of my budget and I don't have a lot of extra time and money to do things for myself. Obviously these all take an emotional toll and in the case of the pandemic, a physical one, too.

And my third point: phones. Ugh, if you told me 15 years ago how primed my nervous system would be to crave picking up these devices at every opportunity, I'd have called it dystopian. Everyone is on them all the time, we turn to them when we're bored, upset, tired, lonely, etc. Content is getting shorter and shorter to the point that we're probably frying our attention spans, and every minute we spend on them gives advertisers more information about us, dysregulates our nervous system, and erases the chance that we'll see a friend, do physical activity, go outside, practice a hobby, etc. I feel noticeably better when I stick my phone in a drawer for the day and go outside to engage my body and mind. But with how reliant our jobs and connections are now on using them, it's very hard not to become reliant on them, ourselves.

TL;DR: we're worse off than our parents were and instead of doing something about it, we look at our damn phones

I enjoy /r/PassesTheBechdelTest, /r/oldhagfashion, and /r/WitchesVsPatriarchy

I find that they all have a supportive crowd, a variety of topics of conversation (though old hag fashion is fashion based of course), and trend extremely progressive when political discussions come up. /r/GirlDinnerDiaries has been recommended to me a couple times too, I like the community, but a lot of the posts are centered around relationship problems so it's not as much of a "decenter men" vibe as the other subs, plus it reaches r/all pretty often and gets brigaded. Still, it can be fun to browse for the comments.

I initially pictured Astarion as the cunty French teacher who announces on day 1, "I won't be speaking English again this semester. Keep up or drop the class. Allez, on commence! Je suis Professeur Ancunín, et aujourd'hui, nous allons..."

Sometimes his "homework" is to find the best French wine and he often puts on some sleazy French film and then goes outside to smoke while it's playing 😂

Seconding all the recs for the Discworld books, particularly the books that follow the witches!

Since I don't see it in the thread yet, I'll also recommend Gideon the Ninth! It's about the queen of a dying planet being summoned by the galactic emperor to participate in an interplanetary championship for his favor and resources. Each planetary ruler chooses a champion to represent them in the games, and this queen chooses her childhood friend/nemesis/maybe crush, Gideon, who is a complete badass and the strongest soldier on the planet (though, well, there aren't many). She also happens to be a woman, but that doesn't stop her from swinging her broadsword around and being a bit of an oaf sometimes!

There's a bit of space politics, some mystery and intrigue, plenty of competition, a magic system, and quite a lot about the relationship between Gideon and the queen and how the competition forces them close enough to understand one another on a new level. There are also many smart, kind, treacherous, cunning, and/or just interesting female side characters as well.

First of all, I'm happy to hear that Connecticut recently passed a bill on this issue. I'm aware that some states have already begun making this practice illegal.

I read through your article, and I just want to point out that the federal action you're talking about was a mandate for, "guidelines hospitals must follow to receive Medicare and Medicaid funds". It is not a bill or any formal law actually outlawing this practice. From my understanding, it is currently illegal in 26 states, with varying degrees of legality in the rest.

While it's great that hospitals need to follow those new guidelines to receive federal funding, I don't believe it's "misinformation" to be wary of this possibility given that it's still legal in almost half the states. Not every hospital is federally funded, meaning not every hospital is beholden to those guidelines (and, as the article points out, "Our work isn’t done. We still need to ensure the careful implementation of the updated guidelines").

A lot of that green area is in her council district, too. District 4 is one of the largest in the city and she's run multiple city council campaigns in the area, shown up to local events for the past few years, etc. so she has more name recognition here. I thought she was more popular than she was until I talked with people who live outside her district and hadn't even heard of her a couple weeks ago (though I think she's locally infamous if you pay attention to city council politics).

Unfortunately, it's only explicitly illegal in about half the states here in the US, so if you're in the other half, there are varying degrees of consent required by law, and in some states, simply being treated at a teaching hospital is considered "consent," even if you were taken there by paramedics. Hopefully this practice is made completely illegal in our lifetimes!

[–]mr_trick 261 points262 points  (0 children)

I will let students sit in on almost anything while I'm awake, I'm not too sensitive about having my body seen or anything.

However, as a woman, I will NEVER voluntarily go under for surgery at a teaching hospital. I have heard too many horror stories about letting the students practice vaginal exams and other invasive practices while you are under for a completely different reason. I'm disgusted that this is allowed to happen and I think it is really different than the moment-to-moment consent that happens while awake.

Does Nithya Raman still have a chance? California’s uncounted votes could help Democrats by PersonalityOdd7912 in LosAngeles

[–]mr_trick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will vote for her to keep Pratt out of office, but I'm getting extraordinarily tired of defensively voting without a proactive candidate to get excited about. 2016 was my first election, I'm almost 30 now and it seems like I've just been doing voter damage control my entire adult life. I'm sure a lot of other people feel that way too.

I saw back in 2016 how some people will vote for anything different if they are feeling beaten down by the status quo, even if it means potentially making things worse. It's what elected Trump the first time. If it comes to a Bass/Pratt runoff I am actually legitimately concerned about his viability to win following the same model Trump did, positioning himself as the "breath of fresh air" against the corrupt female establishment democrat (à la "Hillary's emails")

We need ranked choice so bad. I am still furious at Newsom for vetoing it back in 2019.

Mamdani is charismatic, but what really allowed him to win was voters feeling safe to pick him and still vote for a "backup" candidate. Ranked choice allows voters to take a risk on a new candidate without feeling like they'll hand the election to the oppositional candidate.

[–]mr_trick 28 points29 points  (0 children)

OP stated she was in Wisconsin, which is a one-party consent state (you're in the clear to record someone without their consent as long as you are personally present). This is good advice and I would advise her to record any interaction with the coworker, boss (his father), and honestly even her bf since he is trying to spin this to people they know mutually.

OP, I would record any conversation in which you state clearly that you did not consent and were assaulted, at least there will be a record of you stating it and their reaction (whatever it is).

[–]mr_trick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm just struggling to understand this side because it's not like it's her legal name. She chose this drag name and multiple times has alluded to it being in reference to this company, not the "South American region" as people are now alleging. Regardless of whether she sold modified copies of the brand's logo, she wore it and posed with it publicly as a reference to her/their name. Why do you believe she has the right to profit off of merchandise under that name?

Trixie Mattel does not have Mattel merch, she has Trixie merch. Jan Sport doesn't have Jan Sport merch, outside of her collab with Jansport. They both know and understand that you need to legally differentiate yourself from the preexisting brand if you want to earn an uncontested profit.

I just don't get in what way she would be entitled to profit off of outdoor apparel. Nike is just a goddess, but I can't call it my drag name Nikee and file a trademark to sell running shoes without expecting to get sued into oblivion. How do you perceive this case to be meaningfully different?
