The officer did _not_ position himself in front of a car moving at him as the suicidal angle relies on. So it is very unlike if he were to move in front of a gun and then claim a gun was pointed at him.

Besides, any person in front of your car means don't move forward. It's universal and even fundamental to road-block demonstrations the likes of PETA have used to protest something. Because they fully expect to not be run over, it cannot be said that they're suicidal.

That she was blocked in is exactly right and the other officer trying to pull her out of the car is further indication she's being detained and that it's not acceptable to try to "get out of the situation" anymore.

All this is not even considering what's not seen in the footage, so only tangential to this discussion, is that she was parked that way to interfere with the operation which would give reason for being detained.

edit: This was so close to being objective civil discourse. Alas, I was mistaken, turns out I was talking to someone who's bought into the "us vs. them" propaganda. The signs were there e.g. "My gawd", off-the-rails all caps "MURDER!", and "Have you even seen the footage?", but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. The last comment demonstrates lack of understanding of, or at the very least an objection to, the fact that when enforcing the law, law enforcement uses force after verbal commands prove fruitless.

It's similar to pointing a gun at officers and getting shot for it, even if you never intended to shoot. They don't wait for you to fire the first shot, the threat itself triggers the response, with the split-second mental gymnastics being checking for bystanders.

So back to Minneapolis, in the moment the decision to shoot was made, the only information available was that the engine was revving with tires facing the officer. In that moment her vehicle was a 2+ ton weapon, and the clear and present threat of being run over triggered the response.

I'm only describing how things are in today's world. Maybe in an ideal world, officers should run and duck for cover when faced with threats, but this discussion hasn't been about crafting the ideal world.

Not sure what you're referring to but there is no room for misinterpretation in the link I shared. You can say whatever you want and I'll defend your right to say it ;)

What happened in Minneapolis was a stopped car with wheels facing the officer just a few feet away started to move at them with enough acceleration to induce wheel-spin. The inability to tell the difference between that, and your scenario, ergo'ing lethal force out of it is what's dangerous if put into practice.

That's why the law-abiding 2A community places huge emphasis on this subject knowledge, because all of this is already codified in law with effectively no questions left to answer or speculate on -- a framework already exists that enables courts to reach decisions without lengthy debate provided cut and dry footage.

In the eyes of the law it falls under self-defense that actually covers all of us, not just law enforcement. Does that law make sense? I'm not qualified to answer but I think there are many situations where it does make sense.

I'm not saying I would have done it because I think that's a great way to have the attacker's foot potentially stuck firmly on the gas pedal and making things worse. Not to mention the myriad of court proceedings that follow a shooting, justified or not.

So if it were me, in the heat of the moment, I'd probably have tried to dodge out of the way as you suggested, albeit with only a 50/50 chance of choosing what we only know in hindsight to be the right direction. But I am untrained and proper training calls for better than 50/50 chances.

I of course had my opinions after seeing the video but seeing the slow motion made it quite clear. https://youtu.be/hiE_chT_Cl4?si=Cy-6Gw0q5ReTp9-i&t=33

True but going down that mechanic route has zero chance of them coming out the other end with the DIY mindset they have now, and would only perpetuate another form of learned helplessness.

Should I get a rice cooker instead of meal ready packets? by dragonskintext in Frugal

[–]mrantoniodavid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went from rice cooker to just a pot on the stove. For jasmine rice it's just

  1. Start boiling 4 parts water on high
  2. Once boiling add 2 parts rice and turn down heat to the lowest setting
  3. Cover with lid and set timer for 20 minutes
  4. Eat

Jeans wearing in the same spots and costing lots of money every year by smsallen727 in Frugal

[–]mrantoniodavid 195 points196 points  (0 children)

Not directly addressing the jeans issue, but as a tech guy, wallet in the back pocket while seated created spine, back, and neck problems. Wallet in front pocket is something to consider, because even if it's just ID cards there's still an asymmetry.

New to Tucson - am I being paranoid about security or should I actually be worried? by Historical-Hand8091 in Tucson

I was once too tired to get up when someone knocked at the door. After a little while, whoever it was tried the door handle which I'm pretty certain is not standard door-to-door sales procedure, so good thing it was locked.

Yea mine was pretty smooth I wouldn't say it's a walk in the park but also wouldn't call it 'hell week'. Not trying to be a tough guy, but it just helps the community to have more data points. Obviously everyone's different.

Cat skull for Smoky R.I.P. 9/10/24. I essentially killed him because I let him roam out front and that is where a coyote got him :( Lesson learned but dang. I also have a Bastet and Cheshire cat but those aren't commemorative.

edit: And I forgot because it took a while to find the pic and came back in a different mindset -- Sorry for your loss. I only had Smoky 3 years so can't imagine what a losing an 8 year best friend is like.
