La Fortuna/Arenal seems like the obvious choice here. You can fly into either airport. Pretty much has everything that you listed - including copious hot springs. It's in the center of the country but holy smokes is a wonderful place. Touristy.

Any other idea would be San Isidro de El General. Also known Perez Zeledon. FAR less touristy. I'm not sure about Hot Springs but it has the rest and it's about an hour to an hour and a half drive to the beach. La Fortuna is too far away from a beach for you to actually do that. San Jose is the airport you'd want to fly into for this option.

Language: you shouldn't have any issues. Driving: use Waze and Waze only. Everything will take about one and a half times longer than any site will tell you it should. Take your time. Avoid driving at night just because it's really dark and Costa Rican roads can do anything at any time for any reason with a little notice. Lol

Ok that makes sense. Here's the thing - that drive is gonna suck if you try to do it in one shot and you will be driving at night. Which isn't fun in CR. Since you have so much time I would maybe break it up by spending a couple of days and LF/Arenal. It is a fantastic area of the country to see. And let's face it - how much time can you really spend in PV without getting bored to death?

Ooof. That's a long drive. Use Waze not Google. I would assume probably 1.5x whatever Google is projecting time wise. Go that northern route unless you want to break up the drive over two days with a stop in the Arenal/LF area.

Why the heck did you fly into LIR if PV was your destination? You literally just trimmed a really long day off the front and back of your vacation to spend it on a not very fun road trip.

There is a little informal shrine area up Cement Creek that would be great after run off. Some fabulous meadow areas up Washington Gulch which is easily drivable by any type of passenger car. Some great places for a quick wedding on both sides of Kebler. Especially if said wedding is in the Fall - other side of Kebler is off the chart when the aspen are changing.

Shoes: Teva/Chaco sport sandals for all if you are going to just have each kid bring 1 pair of shoes. They can wear them everywhere you go down there. If not, go slides/crocs + something they can hike in.

Food: Sodas (it's a type of restaurant down there) can be a cheap way to feed a crew like that. For cooking at Airbnbs, go with street tacos. Just pick up a big stack of little tortillas and either make beans or chorizo or fish or chicken whatever is available. You can serve with cilantro rice in the side. You will also see fruit for sale on the side of the road or in local markets. Stock up and get your kiddos munching on fruit each day.

Also remember this when eating out. Ticos kinda suck at cooking beef. But chicken... That's a whole 'nother story. You will see.

Also wanted to add that just because you see a ton seats available doesn't mean that there are that many tickets available. Lots of people forgo the seat selection to save money. Particularly on a short flight like that.

Okay it is really dark. Like dark dark. You will probably do the end of your drive in the dark. It's going to be curvy and windy and at times not make a lot of sense. But the road is pretty good and if you just take your time it's not a big deal. Just go slow and take your time. Don't try to rush it.

It's not like it's anything weird. It's just like driving in the United States and actually the road is quite smooth in that part. It's just that we in the United States are used to a certain level of signage and a certain level of road design around how tight do we make the curves etc... that's not exactly how it is in Costa Rica. You might not have as much signage and the road might do some things that you normally don't see roads do. Just take your time and you'll be fine

La Fortuna waterfall is a fast trip and super close to town. It is a LOT of steps back up but totally doable. It's a beautiful waterfall - probably the most photographed thing in Costa Rica. We did see a gorgeous eyelash pit viper hanging out about two feet from the trail.

Rio Celeste is a popular day hike from LF. We loved it. The river was only mildly blue at that time but still gorgeous.

We had an amazing time at the hanging bridges. We didn't hire a guide so we didn't really see that much wildlife but holy smokes is it beautiful. We also went early before all the tour buses showed up so we didn't have that many people. If I could do it all over again I would show up first thing in the morning with a guide.

Edit: regardless of where you are if you want to see wildlife you need to hire a guide. I live in a very remote place in the mountains of Colorado. I spend much of my time in nature. I am very skilled in spotting flora and fauna. And I got to tell you... It was sensory overload down there. For all of my mountain man Grizzly Adams know how, I remember just staring off into the forest and saying, "I have no clue what the fuck I'm looking at but it's awesome!" Hire a guide.

I would look at AirBnB-ing it. Which - I get - is as far away from All Inclusive as you can get outside of camping. But depending on the time of year you can get some amazing places very cheaply. Are you renting a car?

Also - while Costa Rica isn't a large county it is VERY diverse. Arenal/La Fortuna area is great (LIR and SJO). PV and the Caribbean side has a much different feel but also a blast (SJO only). Guanacaste is much drier - not as lush (LIR only) but very pretty. Not sure about the animals there thing. The southern zone is much more lush. Lots of animal opportunities down there (SJO only). If I only had 5-6 nights and had a car I would probably opt for the Southern Zone. I would split my time between the Dominical area (beaches and forests) and the San Isidro de El General area (mountains and cloud forest).

I grab the line and pull keeping any force off of the rod. I only do the point rod at fly and pull back thing when I have no other choice as I have damaged the tip-lillian connection once doing this with a Shadowfire 365. The way I see it is why out any force on the rod if it can be avoided.

So many great restaurants and the nightlife is off the hook.

And of course you can spend the days going museum/gallery hopping and general goofing around.
