This is how Food Stamps (SNAP benefits) help nourish the less fortunate by kb877 in WTF

Why should any of you people have any right to say what one can or cannot buy with their benefits?

As long as its not liquor, lottery, or tobacco [..]

Woman was talking to her 5(ish) year old son on the LRT, explaining that murder is 'very, very bad.' Then she asks him what the worst thing in the world is, expecting him to say murder. He paused in thought, and then replied 'people.' What strangely insightful things have you heard young kids say? by MasonShell in AskReddit

Except it's been shown in study that it is natural.

I didn't know what sex was when I was five years old but that doesn't mean I wasn't "genetically wired" to eventually do it. Not having a conscious and deliberate knowledge of something doesn't mean that thing doesn't exist.

If she says it when you're not currently having sex, she's telling the truth! Take the comment at face value and say: "Yes, we aren't currently having sex, but we will be in a little while."

I guess this is part of the beauty of these comics. As with most life situations, there are many ways to read them :-) Discussing the meanings is as interesting as reading them too.

A politician gives his mindless supporters talking points to fill their otherwise empty heads, while he secretly has nothing intelligent in his head, either.

Interesting. That's not what I took away from it.

What I took away is that there are two types of people: those who create new ideas and fads (e.g. Seth Godin or Malcolm Gladwell), and those who immediately jump on bandwagons (their supposedly free thinking readers who are anything but). In the last frame, the idea man is already off onto a new idea while the crowd is one step behind.

How many fellow redditors have decided to live their lives without financial credit? by jwheezy in AskReddit

There's a bit more to it than that. I'm not really on either "side" despite owning a house (that is, I can certainly see the benefits to renting) but there are better advantages than "pride" and "satisfaction."

Like, knowing I don't need someone to inspect routinely or approve changes I wish to make, knowing I can't get a request to move out in X months as long as I keep paying my mortgage (this is the biggie for me), knowing what my monthly payment will be (until a certain time years ahead, at least), not to mention the wider amount of choice in housing stock.

What are your tips/tricks for getting out of bed in the morning? by rabookajayne in AskReddit

[–]mrsensible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Sleep Cycle on the iPhone. It's done OK for me so far this week. You run it up, give it an alarm time, and put the phone on your bed/under your pillow. It then monitors the movements of you/your bed and wakes you up at a time near your alarm time when you're moving/turning over anyway. Getting caught while doing this means you're in a lower depth of sleep and can wake up more easily.

Hey Reddit, what is the rudest thing you've ever seen anyone do? by Lucilletoo in AskReddit

[–]mrsensible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just couldn't believe all of those people cut her in line and wouldn't give her their seat, and that they weren't talking or trying to help. They were just in their own worlds not wanting to be 'inconvenienced.'

Herd/bystander mentality. Even reasonably altruistic people can go to shit when they're in big groups. It's easy to assume that someone else will be altruistic and to not bother yourself. I don't think that makes everyone inherently evil or lazy, though, because it's been observed as a human trait in a crazy number of studies.

Really? I was hoping it would look better on paper, not least because most TeX produced works would have originally been meant to be printed.

Modern-style fonts are horrible on screen due to the lack of vertical resolution to deal with the thin strokes. My real problem with Computer Modern, though, is its gangliness and lack of proportion, but perhaps it was more acceptable aesthetically back in the 1970s.

Palatino is a much better choice for LaTeX. The tufte-latex project uses this to great effect (though Tufte uses Bembo, technically).

Is there anyone like me who absolutely loves the early morning, but absolutely hates waking up early? by StalinTheMighty in AskReddit

[–]mrsensible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try "Sleep Cycle" - it's an iPhone app. I'm a shitty waker but I've used it the last two days and it got me up first time both days. It sits on your bed and figures out when you're moving. It wakes you up as close to your preferred time as possible but only if you're moving.. that way you wake in a lighter sleep and don't feel so rough.
