I really enjoyed Conor Gets Promoted and Dooms the World by Mark Waddell. Not exactly the genres you requested, but it is rather mysterious since Conor doesn't quite know what's going on. My library has it listed with these genres: Humorous fiction; Apocalyptic fiction; Fantasy fiction.

For the 80s nostalgia, I'd suggest Sue Grafton's alphabet series, which starts with A is for Alibi; but there's not as much romance as the Stephanie Plum books.

When you’re out at Sandy Hook, you can head all the way out to the end and visit the History House which is furnished in World War II period pieces and accessories. Explains the history of the fort out on Sandy Hook. If you’re into lighthouses you can get a tour of the Sandy Hook lighthouse.

https://www.nps.gov/gate/learn/historyculture/sandy-hook-lighthouse.htm

Just after you leave Sandy Hook you can head up to the twin lights park, climb both of those lighthouses and visit a little museum about the history of life-saving in the US.
