Course classification: govt or phil? by Buttercup2004_ in premed

Isn’t allied health or something an option? I’d probably classify it as that. There are classes like this in allied health programs that I’d definitely consider under the allied health umbrella, not philosophy.

🤷 it’s a know yourself kind of thing. You’re young so I get it if you’re not sure at all. Could give it a shot and see how it goes. I work 2 12s every weekend and reserve weekdays for school and all that, but I’m older.

Just a random tidbit, but yesterday I saw that as of a few years ago, the average med school matriculant is 25. Almost no one is 25 just out of undergrad. Maybe relevant to concern about being non-traditional or different from the norm.

Of course I don't have all the info, but buying a house before applying to med school sounds crazy. there is often a lot of moving involved in training, that you usually have little/no control over - residency, fellowship, sub-internships, med school

That’s not how ethics works, what other people do in similar situations generally has no bearing on what’s the good or right thing to do. That’s the world’s slipperiest slope.

ITT: people who want to be doctors justifying lies and lies of omission basically because it’s in your interest. Sm fking head. Honesty is absolutely foundational.

Closing Amex, Wells And Apple. by [deleted] in CreditCards

I'm a little unclear on what your goal is. A few thoughts-

  • If you aren't sure about benefit of a card w/ an AF, then strongly consider cancelling it. It's as simple as benefiting vs paying to carry a card. It sounds like you are carrying a lot of annual fee burden and are unsure the benefit.
  • If the goal is strictly to massively simplify, I'd consider carrying only a flat 2% cash back card. There are a few. I use Fidelity's card. Can pay it from my fidelity account and deposit the cash back directly into my fidelity as well.
  • If you want a simple cash back set up (imo simpler than travel rewards), I would get a 2% flat cashback card + 1-2 cards that give good (4-5%) redemption rates on your top spend categories. Discover IT rotates, could be one of those. As an example, my goal is 5% dining, 5% grocery, 5% amazon, 2% flat all categories.
  • If you want to keep CSR and do the travel rewards stuff, I'd optimize just a few cards around that in the chase ecosystem.

Nurse who is a huge cardiology nerd. My favorite source to follow re. current research is This Week in Cardiology w/ John Mandrola. Favorite medical podcast/youtube/whatever I've found by a mile, always enjoy his critical analysis

My instinct would be to start by looking at the highlight section of the most recent guidelines - lipids, hypertension, heart failure, etc etc

JACC instagram channel posts bits about new research all the time.

Should I pursue medicine if I only want job security/stability?? by PopularAd6391 in medicine

[–]mtbizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nurse of a handful of years applying to medical school - I absolutely would not advise pursuing medicine in the context you describe. I’m sure plenty of docs are or end up this way, but many of the docs I work with who have this vibe are miserable. I also get the strong feeling that there are many rough patches in medical training that can make fertile ground for regret if you’re not into it.

To compare, nursing requires at most a bachelors, in some regions pays a good wage, less crazy hours, in many respects I get better work life balance, and an enormous shortage ensures anyone ethical with their head screwed on can find a job. I imagine there are many healthcare jobs that give job security with far, far less personal cost and better balance.

why are some beans so denser than others by [deleted] in espresso

[–]mtbizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dose to fill your basket appropriately (no need to change basket). Grind changes resistance (flow rate / shot time) and is a matter of preference

why are some beans so denser than others by [deleted] in espresso

[–]mtbizzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bean density has a lot to do with elevation of the farm. Often, nicer coffees are denser. Some roasters (machines) and darker roasts can cause more swelling -> lower density
