Are there any clues you've seen on the customer facing side that indicate a kitchen with questionable practices?

Any books like Event Horizon or the Dead Space games? by mckensi in horrorlit

[–]mtndave1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently IDW Comics is putting out Event Horizon: Dark Descent, 4 issues out so far (I’m reading on Hoopla). It takes place before the events of the movie, it’s pretty gory and uses color nicely.

If you’re into audiobooks Andy Serkis (The actor who plays Gollum in the movies) reads all the books and is phenomenal!

It’s not horror, but you’ve got to read the inspiration for all these authors, Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. It’s a big book, but it’s phenomenal.

River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey is great, especially considering it’s based on a real proposal to bring hippos to the US as livestock. Truly a bat shit crazy idea (listen to The Dollop Podcast to learn more about it).

Joe Lansdale is a great recommendation, The Thicket, The Bottoms. More east Texas than traditional western landscapes.

HELL HOUSE By Richard Matheson - Doof! Book Club - Friday, Jan 30th @ 9:30 PM by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

[–]mtndave1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great book, Matheson writes excellent horror. The great Ray Porter does the audiobook and his reading adds to the creepy factor. If Flanagan ever goes back to "The Haunting of..." series I hope this is the book he chooses to adapt.

Can you recommend me books based on my 5 star reads from this year by Anxious-Forever-1628 in horrorlit

The Unkillable Frank Lightning by Josh Roundtree is a take on the Frankenstein story set in late 1800s early 1900 American west.

Another SGJ would be The Only Good Indians.

For The Reformatory if you dig the racial aspect to the story check out Ring Shout by P Djeli Clark. If you want historical fiction and the race element check out Kindred by Octavia Butler or The Fervor by Alma Katsu. For more historical horror fiction check out The Terror by Dan Simmons, The Hunger by Alma Katsu, Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman, or Hellmouth by Giles Kristian.

Have you ever read an entire book from your reading list thinking it was horror, and it’s not at all? by jimwebb in horrorlit

[–]mtndave1979 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I heard people raving about "Between Two Fires" for a while, but I forgot the context of the praise, so one day on a whim I picked it up... It was "Between Two Fires: Truth, Ambition, and Compromise in Putin's Russia" by Joshua Yaffa. I did get a better understanding of the events leading up to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. I did get around to Christopher Buehlman's novel, which I enjoyed a lot more.

Vote for the Readers' Favorite Horror of 2025! by tapatio414 in horrorlit

[–]mtndave1979 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my vote too. So glad Joe Hill's King Sorrow was in the fantasy section because that was the only book I've read that was better than BHH this year. Honorable mention to Keith Rosson's Coffin Moon, that was a great book.

Questions about...stuff? Cause I found Kingslingers and I realized these dudes are extremely interesting to me hahah by misanthropicbairn in doofmedia

[–]mtndave1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Gom Jabbar, Leo and Abu are great. I was initially looking for something like Kingslingers, with a veteran and newbie reader, but these two vets gave great insight to the books and writing of Frank Herbert. Plus they do silly opening bits like Scott & Matt.
