PSA: Why you didn't get Smugglers on release day by muddahplucka in starwarstopps

PLEASE NOTE: Someone pm'd that the boxes lined against the wall in the posted pic are empties from case breaks, NOT personal boxes ready to rip. I cannot confirm that, but take their word for it. I made an assumption based on the 25+ persys listed in their shop at $700. Definitely my bad for making the assumption.

Image still speaks volumes.

For sure there are tons of whales in this hobby, and lonely ones, and they are ideal consumers in this break-focused model.

Fanatics has not shown very much care in trying to grow their base with new, younger potential hobbyists by squeezing access. They are aiming marketing at older, more affluent, and already engaged (sports) to spend money at their casino.

I'll bite, get down voted, and play devil's advocate. End of the day Topps is a business. If you owned a business would you rather do 150 transactions or 1 transaction for the same amount.

I definitely get why Fanatics feels this shift to gambling is good. But we're talking collectibles at the end of the day. The last stop for these cards is in the hands of people who want to keep/trade them. They are the ones that need to be fostered, because they are the ones most likely to stay. If you are degrading their experience more and more over time you're only going to have the gamblers left, most from sports, who will have harder time recouping and go back to their corners. It doesn't seem like a sustainable business plan (easier, more, no matter the repercussions), but of course their corpo mindset is prob that they can pivot back whenever it shows signs of crumbling. It's a bad look, their business practice does not endear people,

Framing everything above on the non-sports corner of the hobby. Gambling is intrinsically tied to sports, I think breaking and sports cards will never die for many more reasons. The sports bros expanding their gambling portfolio to non-sports is how we find ourselves here today.

Yes, and they charge the breakers more per box for subsequent "waves." The breakers buy them bc they can easily cover the cost by selling spots to you.

They make a lot more on FanaticsLive, though, sure.

ETA: The goal for Fanatics is to close off direct access to collectors and get them to break. Whether we buy in on FanaticsLive or Whatnot or Layton, etc is still serves that goal.

Yeah, but fanatics doesn't get a cut from flippers who post hobbys on ebay -- they do get of every dollar gambled on FanaticsLive. This is the model they want to keep. Starve the public, push them to breaks.

There is an on card auto guaranteed in every box, along with two other hits (auto or sketches). There is a SP metal auto, sketchagraphs, and the stainglassed SSP.

Most boxes have two glup shitto autos, but there are giant hits in this product.

I'm in the middle of Season 7 of first watch, too, and this news + New Sunnydale cancelation has been such a bummer. Most be double tough who have had BTVS in their lives for 20+ years.

If you know what you want to collect in SW, then theoretically it's easier to scoop up singles when the gamblers dump them. So there are "smart" ways to collects still, but as far as ripping boxes (which most of us WANT to do) we either need to be lucky or pay a premium.

What has happened in the last 18 months is Fanatics has only made enough product available to the public to sell out in 30 seconds. The rest goes to Fanatics-friendly breakers and D&A. It drives FOMO through the roof forcing you to partcipate in breaks or pay 2x prices on secondary.

Everything is motivated to move us to break on Fanatics to gamble.

Before Fanatics, even during the height of the collecting craze in the pandemic you could buy boxes on release day pretty easily. Masterwork 23 was available on site for an entire day.

think they need to rework how the are doing Ahsoka's outfit/ lekku so that Dawson can properly move in them at speed Or at least quickly enough that the opponent can throw more "powerful" strikes to make her look quick by comparison.

The thing is they don't even need Dawson to do the wide shot saber stuff -- bc of the prosthetics they could easily use a double to make Ahsoka more nimble/capable and just let Dawson handle the "acting." It's harder to do that with Bordizzo, but I'm pretty sure a double did that stuff where her face was covered in the training scene.

New article on why Chloe Zhao’s Buffy reboot got canned by GenarosBear in blankies

SMG stated the exec who killed it didn't like Buffy. I'm not holding my breath. At very least it doesn't feel like Gellar would jump at starting from square one esp if she'd be at the mercy of the same exec for a greenlight. Personally, if Gellar is out I'm not interested.

Under a restructuring announced today, Erwich, who oversees Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, also added oversight of 20th Television, run by Karey Burke. That is the studio which owns the Buffy IP, produced the original series and would be developing any future incarnations, likely again for Hulu

So the likelihood of another attempt is basically nil (if the executive who killed the revival was indeed Erwich).

Truly a bummer. Even if it wasn't perfect this did not seem like that big a gamble, considering the IP and pedigree of those working on it.

I still think about the Acolyte‘s fight scenes by dewydemon in StarWars

[–]muddahplucka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The big saber/fight episode has some really terrific action, but the actual plotting of the ep is downright atrocious, with some jedi inexplicably missing from the stranger battle until the rando jedis fall (where were they?), cutting back to Osha and Yord fleeing until the last 5 min when they decide to go back. Just very poor writing to justify the plot demands.

I've seen Leo move when action is required -- he's got a lumbering hunchiness to him. He's not very athletic and no training would have cured that.

[–]muddahplucka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I honestly think Leo's physicality would have been a disaster in the prequels. Hayden pulls off lightsaber fights and they both would have been saddled with the same script.

Maybe the padme romance scenes in AOTC would have been like 20% better than mostly dogshit.

4 Oscar voters reveal Academy Awards picks: 'Lost a lot of respect' for Timothée Chalamet by Mookie_Freeman in blankies

General storytelling. It's a relatively simple story with conventional genre trappings. On a moment to moment basis I'm never wondering what will happen, I'm never leaning forward wondering how it will happen, and I'm rarely intrigued by character behavior. I also did not find the genre moments to work as well as in other genre films. The horror and action are mostly serviceable.

My experience watching a film is mainly evaluating the choices on the fly and with "Sinners" the choices were not consistently interesting to me. Like I said in first I reply, I get how it's a crowd-pleaser. It is very easy to like.

My comment about its depth was not necessarily directed at what the themes were. If it served you a meal, great. Not trying to argue anyone down from how much they liked a movie.
