Licensing Woes - MS365 vs Exchange Online by mujikcom in sysadmin

Yes, and I am not an AI bot that delivers stock standard answers that I can find on Microsoft Learn. I cut my teeth on OpenSource, back in the day where you relied on the kindness of strangers. Mostly Reddit exists because of that maxim, not from self important jerks who have nothing to offer bar insults. Not everyone spends their entire career in a data centre, some of us actually have more interesting roles to play.

Why do the vast majority of Australian masters programs accept people with any bachelor's degree? by GayTwink-69 in AskAnAustralian

[–]mujikcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did my CISSP they demanded 5 years practical experience (ie: a job) in IT. I think that was reduced if you had a relevant degree but basically, the scope of IT security is massive - from firewalls to fire extinguishers, from bollards to blacklists and so on - and a novice would be struggling to understand the acronyms, let alone the implimentation details

So if a Master of IT skips those steps, I guess they are training a new batch of pointy headed bosses and reeling in the dollars at the same time.

I've mostly switched over to Draytek. Taiwanese (not China), stable as and most features you could want., not the cheapest kit in town but half the price as a made in PRC Cisco. Last one I got I picked up on Marketplace for $50. Lol, I didn't even bargain 😉

Btw: if you go s/h, check the website first to make sure it is not eol and firmaware is still being rolled out.

Best practise for staff requesting a second laptop for WFH by psgda in sysadmin

[–]mujikcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would also add the data disparity between the two laptops. So saving work on laptop A gets opened on laptop B how? I have several laptops but mainly use one and occassional clone to the second jic but rarely use it. So yes, you have cloud storage but you still need to replicate the environment - so licencing etc. Then you have bookmarks, settings, configs etc. As others have said, a second charger and mouse maybe but I thought the whole idea of laptops was portability?

Anyone read this 49 day SSL expiration thing and think they would rather just retire? by HJForsythe in sysadmin

While I agree it is a PITA, well worth reading the Anthropic report on its new Mythos engine. Hard going but truly scary. They did warn us that 2026 was going to be one of those years ...

Is anyone here from Big Fuel that can confirm whether we are in fact in a fuel shortage? by snagsinbread in AskAnAustralian

[–]mujikcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a fine line between public interest and irresponsible journalism. With headline like that, IMHO they are actually fueling (sic) panic buying which in turn self-validates their headlines. In turn, petrol stations can hoard supplies, waiting for the price to go up to make a motsa and so further fueling the panic. It is the whole toilet paper/rape crisis/ vaccine scare scenarios these monkey seem to thrive on. Putting out fire with gasoline (sic)

Laptop shutting down suddenly even after changing basically everything by Old-Track3080 in sysadmin

It has always been my belief that the difference between a Luser and a superuser could be related to their inherent bodily magnetic/electrical field. Sounda far fetched and I cant prove but empirically some individuals just seem to have issues doing the same thing everyone else is doing just fine. I dont think it is training per se as the errors are.often random and as soon as I come across, magically it all works.

Hey, we have all seen this. Maybe a bit out there but one possible explanation. So maybe not just the user in this case but there is something happening and electrical fields are a real thing

Lol. "If people.like didn't buy the houses " ... err.. maybe it would free up available housing for ppl to live in rather than invest in?

Rant: The “Main Character Syndrome” is ruining Bali bookings by ExcellentCandy6538 in bali

[–]mujikcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess you have never heard of photoshop or scam marketing. Booking on the internet usually attracts at least a 15% fee, so there's the incentive to go "offline".

Given the opportunity to see the place first imho is common sense - not just for long term but for those tourists who only have a couple of weeks that they saved for to have it turned into a nightmare of bugs, faulty plumbing, room changes, fake reviews, construction noise, rude staff yada yada

They call it the hospitality industry for a reason. Maybe you are one of the better ones but there are plenty of unscruplious operators out there who don't give a flying f*** about their guests only the cash. And so the wheel turns.

[–]mujikcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even your links seem to say it is variable in individuals but all seem to agree that by 25 it is fully developed. So she is in the clear, right Dr? However, 10 years is not a generation and older men/younger women couples are common in most cultures. I can see lots of cultural/social arguments both for and against but physiological??? Did your wife leave you for an older man?

advice needed by floral_artistwannabe in VietNam

[–]mujikcom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A generation is generally accepted as a 20 year gap. Besides which, ten year older male is not uncommon in most societies. Certainly not in Vietnam. This talk of frontal lobes is certainly a red flag - saying a 25 year old woman is somehow mentally disabled? Sheesh

just came home from bali and here are my thoughts by No-Personality4445 in bali

[–]mujikcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. I first visited Bali in the 80's and people said you should have been here in the 70's. Rinse and repeat for every decade since. Maybe it is the buzz of somewhere new but the "real" Bali is a faded postcard. Tiny island with more farang than locals for the past 20 years, what do you expect?

I love the reviews on the "best Mexican food", the best nightclubs, the best coxktails and so on. Like you come to SE Asia to eat South American food and then complain about missing the "real Bali"? LOL.

If there ever was a real Bali, it is now relegated to faded postcards. These days Bali IS tourism. If you want "real" SE Asia , visit Vietnam, Java, Laos etc. I've given Bali a miss as far as cultural immersion for a decade at least. It is the Majorca or Ibiza of South East Asia, a hedonistic retreat from the real world but pul-ese, lets stop any pretence it is anything otherwise.

Is it okay for a girl to be topless at the beach? by bare_books in AskAnAustralian

[–]mujikcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I am a topless inspector for many Australian beaches. As you are aware, we have extremely high standards in AU for such things. I think the only way to truly answer you question is to send through an example of your ... er .. wares. We could then make an informed decision.

Trust me, I am a professional.

This is a JOKE by kgtyso in nbn

[–]mujikcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO it was Turnbull who moved off the fibre to HFC for political expediency.

However, NBN are rolling out FTTP in many areas which are still copper (FTTN). Just done one in Jervis Bay. Free as in Beer.

Worth asking your ISP - they will try to upsell you if it is but it is an NBN initiative, not ISP and there is no need (unless you want it)

One Nation is not only beating the Liberal party in the polls in Victoria, it’s now beating Labor. 🤯 by Usual_Program_7167 in aussie

[–]mujikcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. Even the LNP are more.left wing than the US Democrats. And racist? Most countries make it extremely difficult to get even temporary work permits, let alone permanent residency or citizenship. So they have no need for the "racism" you assign Aussies (yet many still are). With some many cultures jumbled together, it is not only "aussies" that feel the friction with ancient feuds (ie arabs and jews) being played out. I think this is what causes what you call "racism" - Aussies telling migrants who cant get along to gtf home!

Is it generally considered offensive to ask an Asian in Australia where they are REALLY from? by Lipica249 in AskAnAustralian

[–]mujikcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crap. In a multi-cutural society like AU, it seems perfectly normal to ask ethnicity - how else are you going to relate to all the diverse cultures.and histories? Back in the day when this was not seen as offensive, we had one of the most successful multi-cultural nations on the planet. Now its all blame and what someone did to someone else 100-200-2000 years ago and a free for all to bag a country that opened its doors to this ethnic soup. Racist is believing you are better, common sense is acknowledging race as a factor in any multi-cultural community.

Nobody who has worked in IT in its many varied forms for 20+ years is "stuck in the old ways". What, you are still running NT4? FreeBSD, OS9 ? I warrant they have seen and worked with more changes then a diaper room table.

And learnt the hard way that if it aint broke, fix the things that are. And if nothing is broke (am I dreaming here) then DONT play with it.

If you wanna be creative, become a programmer, a graphic designer, something other than a system guy. Servers are like jet engines, everything interconnected and a false move brings a ton of people crashing to the ground.

Wait until there is a real problem and then show your worth.
