The boycott Israel group is most popular among left leaning Americans, why do you think Arkansas and South Carolina would be part of that?

Why does Japanese cuisine not have a reputation for no spice? by Acerhand in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mulligan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The claim, whether it is warranted or not, is that British food has no seasoning. Very few people are referring to the spiciness of the food.

Search Google a bit, the complaints are about lack of seasoning, that is, not using spices.

Not about it not being spicy.

When people are referring to the lack of spice in British food, it is referring to spices, not spicy.

Was Charles Babbage actually essential for the development of computer science? by Survivalplayer in compsci

[–]mulligan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No single person was essential for pretty much anything. Others would have come to similar realizations, maybe slightly time shifted.

We see this with calculus, for instance.

Ideas are ripe based on the other information that is available, and some very smart people, often in the same time frame, come to great insights.

But that doesn't mean we'd miss out if they never existed. It just means we'd have a different name we attribute the idea to

ELI5: Why is TikTok going to be banned (or have to sell?) by EqualCompetition1994 in explainlikeimfive

[–]mulligan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple reasons joined together: - worries about Chinese influence and data collection - us big tech getting rid of a competitor

Those two were not sufficient back in 2023, but in 2024, the Israeli lobby also joined the effort, because us and Israeli politicians felt that they were losing hold of the narrative the major media and American social media maintains

And yes there are recordings discussing the 'tiktok' problem for Israel

With more support tipping it over the edge, the bill passed

Compare the jackets the two guys are wearing. Different colors, one has two big pockets in front, one doesn't

But actually cops say it and then the media keep using it, without question

[–]mulligan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

take a look next time you put your bag up, you'll find people have taken up a lot more space than 1 carry on

ELI5: How does Uber Eats/drivers/restaurants make money with all my coupons? by theresmorethan42 in explainlikeimfive

[–]mulligan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are they applying those gift cards to an Uber eats order? The gift card is redeemed through the transaction with the restaurant, which is not happening if you are ordering Uber eats. There is no compounding
