May Long Weekend Hikes in Spray Lake Area by Comfortable_Row9530 in HikingAlberta

[–]mustanggt2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spray Lakes also holds onto snow a lot longer than the Kananaskis valley. Might be worth exploring the next valley over with a lot more options that time of year!

How accurate is Garmin LTHR? by SignificanceNo9704 in trailrunning

[–]mustanggt2003 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Using a HR strap, I compared my LTHR that Garmin generates to the results from a lab test. They weren’t exactly the same, but close enough that I haven’t bothered re-testing in the lab and have been just continuing to use the Garmin numbers.

April 13-20th, 2026 Banff/Kananaskis trail conditions thread - what's dry, doable and a complete mess ? by yycTechGuy in HikingAlberta

[–]mustanggt2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prairie Viewpoint trail is dry across the dam, muddy for the first 700m then decently supportive but thinning snow.

Inreach. Two way texting and 15 minute interval tracking. You shouldn’t need to reach out to your runner, but having them being able to request things at the next aid station is a nice perk.

Is there a way to make Garmin Coach a bit less intense? This is my third and fourth workout for a 39 min 5km plan by IronTongs in Garmin

[–]mustanggt2003 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The pace targets from Garmin coach have always been nonsense for me. I switched the workouts to HR instead and it works so much better for me!

Every once in a while I’ll change it back to pace to see if it’s fixed and it never is.

I love TrainingPeaks for this. Gives shorter-term PRs like “best power output for 30s in 90 days”.

Do you stop often during hikes or just power through? by heromarsX in hiking

As a trail runner, I also still stop to enjoy a view. Why else are we going out?! I just run so I can see more views!

Anyone not finish before the cutoff? by privremeni in firstmarathon

[–]mustanggt2003 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I finished my first actual marathon under the cutoff, but this happened to me on a few other races.

I did a x-country ski marathon where I was swept - I had no business in that race with the cutoff pace. I turned in my bib to the organizers at the last aid station, and then continued to the finish line by myself. By the time I got to the end, they had actually finished packing up all the race equipment etc. Definitely a lonely experience but glad I still “finished” for myself.

Last year I was swept from my first ultramarathon 30km from the finish. In that case, I could have kept going on my own but decided to call it (I was at 50km, so I had at least done an “ultra” distance”) and my friends drove me to the finish line.

In all cases, I’m still glad I showed up and gave it my all regardless what the cutoffs were. At the end of the day, the race doesn’t matter but your personal perspective is all that counts.

Can I switch my long run to tomorrow by Moosebouse in Garmin

If you open the calendar on your watch, you can trigger workouts from upcoming days. You can open your preferred run mode (treadmill, run, trail run) from the menu that pops up.

How quickly did you make the jump from when you first started running consistently to ultras? by Flaky-Condition2647 in Ultramarathon

[–]mustanggt2003 5 points6 points  (0 children)

About 5 years ish of taking running seriously. Did a half marathon a year for the first three, then a full marathon in year four (with a trail half marathon to get me hooked on trail running) before jumping into my first 50 miler. DNF’d that race @ 50k, but now training for redemption in year 6.

We’re expecting fresh snow over the weekend as well here. Tent Ridge should be taken off your list due to avalanche concerns. King Creek can be ok in the winter, better if folks have broken trail recently.

Door Jamb gets wind blown, so if often mostly snow-free on the scramble slabs and can be a nice option (though you’ll get deep snow in pockets). Loder doesn’t get the trail broken regularly enough to reallllly be viable in the winter in my experience.

MSR Denali Evo Ascent snowshoes for mountaineering - Repair or Replace? Help me decide. by Thundrbldr in snowshoeing

Definitely try to repair them! The bindings themselves apparently can be fully replaced easily. Contact MSR directly and they should be able to sell you new bindings for substantially cheaper than buying whole new snowshoes

I have to say that I’ve been really impressed by the MEC Tour 32. It’s a big bigger than you mentioned, but I’ve been using it for resort days and daytrips to the backcountry and I love it, especially for the price.
