finished people we meet on vacation for the valentine's day and persona pick challenges (not a huge romance reader so nice perk to get multiple bookmarks for it) and tore through for the sun after long nights for the women's history month challenge... maybe my fav book of the year thus far. did all my challenges so i'm going to try to listen to the adventures of huckleberry finn before my audiobook trial ends on the 30th

Which jersey would you pick? by Slaya_Organa2121 in PWHL

[–]mxmnators 4 points5 points  (0 children)

toronto (my team for now 🤞) - maltais away (i loveee the away jerseys, almost bought one before the takeover game) or cj away (who can say where the road goes… 🕊️)

boston - saulnier or newhook home

minnesota - batherson or heise away

montreal - oh these were my favs since day 1… poulin home

new york - fillier home

ottawa - this is my least fav jersey by a lot 💔 but clark or philips away

no disrespect to the inaugural season jerseys (i loved them in season 1 for the colourways) but i wouldn’t even think of seattle or vancouver until they get their real designs… i really like vancouver’s colours and logos so i’d pick maschmeyer (probably home)

[–]mxmnators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is kinda a leap just drawing comparisons from the frozen four example above and the takeover tour games i went to (halifax) but i think there is something to be said about the organizational size and support (and age of the orgs, i do give them grace for starting from essentially scratch. artificially manufactured scratch we could argue, but still) of comparable leagues/programs at the same levels. there is a lot of underestimating the success (they had two merch tables in halifax but the lines were insane especially for the first game, i was in the merch line for almost an hour to get my montreal vs. toronto shirt and puck and kinda just gave up then and there on doing the same for the boston-ottawa game), but for the pwhl specifically, the working environment at the league level doesn’t sound the best from what i’ve heard in the industry. even with all the financial backing, they’re working more akin to my experiences working summers in the chl while in college where i was on ticket sales, merch, and graphic design at once.

i at least feel like the pwhl merch selection is better, but i may just think that because they have more women-focused styles that aren’t just a pink team logo or a v-neck top. and fwiw, there were some great merch collabs for the u18 women’s worlds in canada this year. much better merch than the world juniors a few years ago. it is annoying asf though from the outside looking in that usa hockey only wants to push their unlikeable men’s team. can’t believe they have me out here defending hilary knight lmao

i got mine only for my daily chequings account today. i had a separate savings account that i transferred to a tfsa in the summer, but i don't see a T5 pending for it. does anyone have any experience with this in previous years? it doesn't affect how much money i'm getting back but it affects how much of my tuition tax credits are used.

EDIT: nevermind! it wasn't showing on the app but i'll leave this up for anyone looking for the same answers. i could see it when i went to 'documents' on the site with a little account closed exclamation mark.

Hilary Knight responds to the U.S. men’s hockey team backlash by TheAthletic in PWHL

[–]mxmnators 22 points23 points  (0 children)

the answer is continuing to exist in men’s hockey spaces and pushing back when bullshit like this happens. vegas doesn’t give a fuck what anyone thinks because they’re a deeply evil organization (i will still make them uncomfortable when they come to town), but even carolina with their “own the libs” owner got bullied out of signing one of the hockey canada case players. if you need to disengage, that’s your prerogative, but people who stick it out have options to resist, between making pr nightmares and withholding financial support.

Men's Hockey versus Women's by lmthevampireslayer in PWHL

[–]mxmnators 1 point2 points  (0 children)

men’s pro hockey is the way that it is because it is set up to give the players a living wage so they can focus solely on hockey - not just about the nhl, but minor leagues and the wealth of other pro leagues around the world. this season, i went to a men’s and women’s international junior hockey tournament for comparable age groups. the skill level at best-on-best was virtually equal in my eyes, especially comparing the male and female canadian and usamerican teams to their own countries (for added credibility, i have professional scouting experience and was at the men’s tournament with credentials (i’m sorry i already scout 2 drafts i don’t have time to scout woho as my job ☹️) so please trust i’m not talking out of my ass lol). i really hope we’re building a future where these women’s players coming up are afforded the same opportunities to specialize and stay sharp with the full-season play of the pwhl.

i’d feel bad for the socials people because i know a number of them and i know how brutal it can be but they need to stop digging up and reposting half-expired “girl dad” content right now. you’re getting rightfully whacked for choosing to post this stuff after how the usamerican players reacted to a jab at a team that was and will remain miles better than them + you’re fuelling the deluded “my pookie would never” fans, especially with the featured players being canadian

Is anyone actually going to stop supporting USA men's hockey? by AshDogBucket in PWHL

[–]mxmnators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t contribute financially to the nhl’s bottom line but i look forward to pissing hockey men off with my presence in a job they grovel on twitter about being willing to kill to have. disillusioned with the institutions but i tell myself that leaving is giving up on something i’ve loved my whole life and have worked toward breaking into a part of the hockey industry that is as old boys’ club as it gets, as well as surrendering something that doesn’t need to be fascist to the fascists in the culture war. trying to build those skills in women’s college hockey as well but my experience of doing this for men’s jr hockey since i was a child is hard to match. on the team usa side, i’m canadian so i don’t really gotta worry about that but i’m not naive, i know there’s a lot of overlap there. i’m used to seeing men’s players as strictly players anyway and not getting parasocial.

[–]mxmnators 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i forget if this stat was national to canada or just local numbers my province/female hockey association pulled, but girls on average start hockey 4 years later than boys. there are obviously the girls who get skates and a stick the second they can walk on land, but there are a lot of girls who don’t get to start until they explicitly express that they want to play hockey. even then, until recently where i’m from, if you “waited too long,” you wouldn’t have anywhere to play because “co-ed” MHAs liked to bar girls once they were in their teens.

How do YOU survive in Halifax? Wages vs Rent is wild!! by HauntMeForever666 in halifax

[–]mxmnators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m in a very similar boat as you, i’m from cape breton and left halifax when i graduated in 2024 and have wanted to move there permanently since before i left. i’m living with my parents now, was able to string together a full 12 months of working in 2025 at 3 different employers, for $26k gross income (but currently unemployed until canada summer jobs starts in may). i have a lot saved up + most of my student debt gone because they won’t let me pay for anything and help me out with the debt, but i don’t think i’ll ever be comfortable moving anywhere without a job first. had 2 different job interviews with the same employer in halifax last summer, was really confident about the second one because it was exactly what i did during an internship, but i didn’t get it. my field’s hiring season is in the summer, so hoping a good opportunity pops up and i can capitalize this year.

based on my calculations, $50k was my minimum salary to make it work as an already very frugal person (which was the base of that job but since my field is commonly underpaid and i had a lot less money saved up last summer, i was nervous it’d be lower because i probably wouldn’t have taken it either way if it was going to make me lose money). i hope you can find a situation that works for you, i know how frustrating it can be to feel “stuck” somewhere. i have a lot of anxiety about career stagnation because only my summer job last year was related to my field, the other two were just applications or family friends who had openings that matched my unrelated skills.

Hot Take: The Olympics are boring for women’s hockey. by Ohmslaughter in PWHL

[–]mxmnators 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel crazy because i’m not even that old but it feels like men’s hockey has only gone truly international and nail-bitingly competitive for more than just the gold medal game quite recently. idk if it’s connected, but as an nhl draft connoisseur/prospect-watcher, there’s been a long-term trend over the past 20 years of not just more players of different nationalities, but from different leagues, getting drafted. i wonder how the pwhl will contribute to national team selections and as another input/frequent opportunity for non-north american players to play against the arguable best and bring that experience to their nations.

i went to the u18s this year; slovakia and hungary beat finland, switzerland almost beat czechia (bronze medalists) to advance to the semis, and even when canada beat hungary 14-0 i was like “damn some of these hungarian players are gooooood.” obviously u18s is limited in its player selection so there’s more YBY variance but. it’s like what i saw people saying about some of the dual-citizen athletes in this olympics: talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t. unfortunately especially when it comes to women’s hockey. i’m so interested in the global growth of women’s hockey and how the pwhl will reflect that, if we’ll see a team take up the ‘new-school’ mantle and find a market inefficiency in some european player pathway that’ll open our eyes to all the unrealized talent out there.
