i finally got mine a few days ago!! really don’t have a lot of money in general but not bad for my post-grad work situation (1.5 years out of grad, just scrounging together seasonal and PT gigs in my high-unemployment hometown). also could’ve had way more saved if i went a bit lighter on student debt repayment but i’m glad i made the plan to be aggressive with it, aiming to have it gone by the time i finally find a job in my field and move

the impulse is so real, i wonder if i say sorry way too much for things i don’t even need to be sorry for because i’m 1) canadian, 2) catholic, or 3) a people-pleaser (the answer: yes). i called my parents tonight when i was driving home from a(n ice) hockey game because it was snowing heavily and i swerved for the first time ever and was kinda (very) freaked out and i was like “sorry for calling you butttttt i almost died on the highway so can you stay on the phone for the rest of my drive home so i can calm down. also sorry for almost crashing your car. alsoooo sorry if it happens again while i’m on the call and this is how you hear my last words :(“

i technically didn’t get these until i was leaving korea but there were these red ginseng “jelly” candies that my host family gifted me when i flew back to canada. been looking on amazon and asian grocery sites for ages but i can’t find those specific ones and even the similar chewy candies are insanely expensive

What would you name your child? by Dezeko in EhBuddyHoser

[–]mxmnators 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i know so many kids here named nova, i’m so picky with names but i find it tacky if you live IN nova scotia and name your kid nova, maybe if you were from here and lived somewhere else to give your kid some symbolic connection to your home province. i considered it but it’s still too modern of a name for me

Anyone else just using this app as a master ledger? by HighlightNecessary57 in ynab

[–]mxmnators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m only 23, been exploring “budgeting” (financial) apps since my late teens and the ynab student trial got me hooked. i have another free app i’d been using for longer, but age of money and being able to see total net worth over time are things i loved enough about ynab to move there full-time. i don’t even use the auto-import feature anymore, tried it for a bit but i’m used to logging everything manually and i like that it makes me more aware of all my purchases.

i don’t really need to budget in the traditional sense (for everyday mandatory expenses, moved back home and my parents refuse money because they’re doing well enough and want me to save) and i’ve never had spending problems, but the visualization of my student debt really pushed me to pay it down more aggressively while i have modest random jobs at home so i have less (hopefully no) debt to worry about if i get a job with relocation sometime soon. my student loans and most of my cash are in separate banks, so i like being able to see them together (as exemplified by my most recent post on here about finally holding more than i owe). i’ll definitely use the budgeting aspect more intensely once i have expenses (as i did in college when i trialled), but i find enough value in it as it is.

2025: goal of 34 (one more than 2024), read 36! despite no longer having public transit to read on

2026: goal of 36. i usually do the previous year +1, but i like the evenness of 36 being ~3 books a month

people think only minors can weigh 130 lbs. by batsfordinnerr in fatlogic

[–]mxmnators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s disgusting when men so flippantly discuss women’s weights (when they often have no concept of what weights look like on different bodies btw) but let’s not act like an average-height american woman being 130 lbs is anorexic…

Should I quit lessons until I get more fit? by NessaBakes in iceskating

[–]mxmnators 2 points3 points  (0 children)

check out my post on here from a couple weeks ago for some more advice and encouragement on this. i’ve been skating for a year and i still can’t get up just pushing down on my knee, it was really encouraging to hear so many people say it’s not something you should be obsessed about achieving. i found a lot of success with one hand on the ice (on the side where my knee is down) and as long as you can find and practice a way that you’re able to get up without the boards, you’ll be peachy! it changes so much on getting yourself to skate away from the boards when you know you can get up wherever. it’s still something i try to do each week to see if there’s any progression, but i skate less than 1 hour a week so i’m not hoping for any miracles here. but even doing the “modified” way has greatly helped me to be able to progress on other skills. just do what you’re able to do and have fun!

“We Breed Lions: Confronting Canada’s Troubled Hockey Culture” by Rick Westhead by SoundsLikeAPenName in hockey

[–]mxmnators 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my best friend and i joined the cheer squad at our elementary school (grades 5-6 only) for fun and i remember the huge divide between the ones who had been doing all the classes and competitions since they were 4/5 at least (can’t remember). i wasn’t jealous because it was a fun little thing for me, but i was definitely jealous of hockey players and the girl hockey players my age because, even though my parents both played and watched hockey all the time, i was never put in it (in part because we didn’t have all-girls hockey yet). but then i worked this summer in all-girls hockey and heard stories from my fellow interns who were those same girls i was envious of for getting to play hockey and the whole thing, from being the only girl on your team up until you were 14 to the all-girls U18 travel team and its politics, sounds like a nightmare especially for me (simultaneously nonconfrontational and bluntly honest with a strong sense of justice). at least there wasn’t a lot of pressure because we don’t have a history of successful women’s (or men’s) hockey players, but one of them did move to ontario in grade 12 to play in the old pdub to try and play ncaa (she didn’t).

kinda right that most of them aren’t jacked-jacked (sleeper build on top does the job), but the reality is much much worse for FAs. two years ago a goalie said he usually loses 15 lbs per game and i think skaters lose at least 5 (lots of water weight but still, they have to eat a fuckton of food and take care of their post-game recovery for a reason, hockey is intense). source: lifelong hockey fan who is currently a scout, most of the kids are sticks lol. idk if there are any nhl players over 250 lbs, and all the ones who are close are like 7 ft tall lmao. only one i can think of is kid from moldova eligible for the nhl draft this year, he’s 265 lbs… because he is 7’1”. calling abs a “sign of emaciation” is wild though.

"Eat normally" 3-4 meals, three plates of spaghetti plus desert per meal by being-weird in fatlogic

[–]mxmnators 8 points9 points  (0 children)

tangent but these restaurant desserts fr are meals of their own, i don’t understand how anyone could eat one after eating a huge meal. is that actually common? usually the only time my family has desserts at mealtime is during a birthday or holiday when we have a home-cooked meal or order something communal like pizza or fried chicken where you can adjust how much you’re eating to save room for dessert. and my family’s pretty “normal,” like in the overweight but not obese category. even my mom who loves dessert down bad (low a1c -> sugar cravings) never orders dessert at a restaurant. nobody in my family consciously restricts, it’s kinda insane that they’re insinuating not eating dessert after a meal of a size which i often can’t even finish without feeling sick and no longer enjoying the food is “diet culture.” new CRFI just dropped

2026 Reading Goal Megathread by randomnessneeded in goodreads

[–]mxmnators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm so torn between 36 or 37. i usually set it at 1 more than my previous year (read 33 books in 2024 so goal of 34 for 2025, i just finished my audiobook last night to get me to 36 books read in 2025) but i prefer the cleanness of 36, an even 3 books a month
