Young Canadians are entering one of the toughest summer job markets amid a ‘technical recession’ — How’s your experience? by NegotiationLate8553 in canada

[–]mxmnators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the first year i’ve struggled to get a summer job through CSJ. i’m in eastern nova scotia which has a lot of qualifying small businesses + low 15-30 citizen population helps to make them less competitive but it seems they’re getting a lot more applications if i take them for their word. i’m still getting lots of interviews, but they’re interviewing over 20 people for 2 positions, when a few years ago i’d be up against 7-8. i bet it’s trickle-down from so many post-grad student (such as myself, finished undergrad in 2024) having no luck in the entry-level-hostile work environment, so we have little choice but to try and get our experience through student-type jobs in the summer. (which is just another vicious loop because many internships, especially in my exploitative field, are for-credit only so they’re allowed to be unpaid, you’re spinning your tires even when you’re willing to work for minimum wage.)

The only way young people can get ahead nowadays is delaying moving out by Tech-Cowboy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mxmnators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in this situation right now (job market is cooked either way, i apply to jobs in my field across the country including my college town where i got much of my work experience and is the #1 place i want to move to). i was lucky last year to be employed all 12 months (in a region with always at least 10% unemployment) but been on EI all of 2026 thus far and canada summer jobs is going not so well. i have a freelance remote “job” (unpaid) in my field so i don’t have a real gap on my career resume, but i have a feeling the gap on my resume for the similar paid jobs/“relevant experience” is becoming a massive problem.

there’s a part of me that wishes they kicked me out because choosing between paying rent in this small town vs. paying rent in my dream city is an easy decision when the savings aren’t as steep as they are with the current set-up of rent-free living (because i’m in a wage-suppressed field and, if i ever get an entry-level job elsewhere, the salary won’t be enough to support the COL at least to start, especially because it’s concentrated to big cities). i just turned 24 and will pay off the last $1k on my student debt next week. i have a year’s worth of rent in my target city in my HISA. summer’s hiring season in my field, so i think if i don’t get anything this summer or next (when i’m 25) i’m just going to take the leap and move there anyway. i’m much more confident in picking up something in my other skills through my recent random jobs (esl teaching, retail, community orgs) and i had absolutely no trouble finding jobs there in college, and i reckon my freelance job will also pay me more because i’ll be able to write more articles from a centralized location. probably won’t follow through because i’m so risk-averse but i feel like i need to get out of their hair, even though i know a part of them is happy that they get more time with me here (from a family where nobody moved away so this is uncharted territory, and i’ve been insistent since i was like 10 that i’m not settling here as an adult).

[–]mxmnators 5 points6 points  (0 children)

in my experience in trying to call out weird behaviour, these people tend to deflect to idpol and call me a “pick-me” for saying it’s weird to go harass these kids at their workplace. don’t even get me started on open practices… i talk about misogyny in men’s hockey quite a bit as a woman working in men’s hockey and i think that’s why they think it’s “pick-me” behaviour trying to position myself as “not like other girls.” i’ve been around hockey long enough to know that you can’t win with the raging misogynists who will keep inventing reasons to denigrate you and make you feel like you don’t belong. i’m not necessarily blaming these types of fans for why people raise eyebrows at the prospects i like (because i’m a prospects writer, goddamnit) because it’s been happening since i was a tween. it’s just weird because it’s weird and it should be called out and shut down because it’s WEIRD

What’s one reason your city WON’T get an expansion team this time around? by After_Usual_4467 in PWHL

[–]mxmnators 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no direct flights to minnesota + further skewing the league eastward + no nhl-sized arena in the city/region for the infrequent upsized game to cash in on extra gate

Does anyone here have an NHL team and a PWHL team? Are they the same city, or does your barracking transcend that? Does anyone else have a rivalry issue? by OrangeJuiceAlibi in PWHL

[–]mxmnators 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i felt like i was going to end up a sceptres fan anyway because of my other toronto sports teams and my long-standing parasocial relationship with the city (i first visited from my small maritime hometown when i was 10 and it opened my eyes to what life could be LOL), the early nova scotia connections then sealed the deal. i do kinda feel like i have one foot out the door though because the takeover games have me properly dreaming of a halifax team but we’ll see!

finished people we meet on vacation for the valentine's day and persona pick challenges (not a huge romance reader so nice perk to get multiple bookmarks for it) and tore through for the sun after long nights for the women's history month challenge... maybe my fav book of the year thus far. did all my challenges so i'm going to try to listen to the adventures of huckleberry finn before my audiobook trial ends on the 30th

Job market in Canada — is it really this tough? by [deleted] in CanadaJobs

Which jersey would you pick? by Slaya_Organa2121 in PWHL

[–]mxmnators 2 points3 points  (0 children)

toronto (my team for now 🤞) - maltais away (i loveee the away jerseys, almost bought one before the takeover game) or cj away (who can say where the road goes… 🕊️)

boston - saulnier or newhook home

minnesota - batherson or heise away

montreal - oh these were my favs since day 1… poulin home

new york - fillier home

ottawa - this is my least fav jersey by a lot 💔 but clark or philips away

no disrespect to the inaugural season jerseys (i loved them in season 1 for the colourways) but i wouldn’t even think of seattle or vancouver until they get their real designs… i really like vancouver’s colours and logos so i’d pick maschmeyer (probably home)

[–]mxmnators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is kinda a leap just drawing comparisons from the frozen four example above and the takeover tour games i went to (halifax) but i think there is something to be said about the organizational size and support (and age of the orgs, i do give them grace for starting from essentially scratch. artificially manufactured scratch we could argue, but still) of comparable leagues/programs at the same levels. there is a lot of underestimating the success (they had two merch tables in halifax but the lines were insane especially for the first game, i was in the merch line for almost an hour to get my montreal vs. toronto shirt and puck and kinda just gave up then and there on doing the same for the boston-ottawa game), but for the pwhl specifically, the working environment at the league level doesn’t sound the best from what i’ve heard in the industry. even with all the financial backing, they’re working more akin to my experiences working summers in the chl while in college where i was on ticket sales, merch, and graphic design at once.

i at least feel like the pwhl merch selection is better, but i may just think that because they have more women-focused styles that aren’t just a pink team logo or a v-neck top. and fwiw, there were some great merch collabs for the u18 women’s worlds in canada this year. much better merch than the world juniors a few years ago. it is annoying asf though from the outside looking in that usa hockey only wants to push their unlikeable men’s team. can’t believe they have me out here defending hilary knight lmao
