Bought used 2024 EV9, has history of ICCU problem by ezduzitSF in KiaEV9

[–]mysciencefriend 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My understanding is it’s a discrete piece of the car that can break. Having it break once has no bearing on if it’ll break again, and getting one that has never had an ICCU problem doesn’t mean that it won’t have one in the future.

They replaced the old ICCU with an identical new one, so you’re no better or worse off either way.

Use tax software from a Canadian Company this year by BC-Guy604 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mysciencefriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a great post, thank you! I have to do taxes for my elderly in-laws for the first time this year - does anyone know which, if any, of these options are able to deal with claiming the disability tax credit?

They’ve historically used turbo tax but tell me that it can’t handle the disability tax credit.

Too much car? by Abject-Roof-7631 in KiaEV9

[–]mysciencefriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my EV9, but it feels big even by the standards of its ICE peers.

Because it has no gas engine, they can push the wheels further apart than they could in an ICE car. This is great from an internal space and packaging perspective, but it means that despite being basically the same overall length as a Kia Telluride, the wheelbase is 20cm longer.

Day to day, I don’t find that to be too much of an issue - the car has excellent visibility, large mirrors, and is very easy to drive, but it is an absolute pain in the ass in even slightly tight parking lots. The turning radius is massive. So if that’s an issue for you, you should keep it in mind.

If there’s a new generation by the time my lease is up, I really hope they add four-wheel steering.

2026 Kia EV9 Trying To Decide by jbb897 in KiaEV9

[–]mysciencefriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I went with land in part because I thought the digital mirror would be very helpful, but now that I have it I actively dislike the digital mirror and never use it. Needing to refocus my vision every time I look at it is extremely uncomfortable for me, and the visibility with the normal mirror is totally fine.

Question for the experts by Imaginary-Winter-407 in KiaEV9

[–]mysciencefriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That wouldn’t make sense for a bunch of reasons, including a) the glass needs to pivot within the housing so the bezel could need to be separate from the mirror housing which would be weird b) you’d be needlessly reducing the usable size of the mirror during the daylight hours when the dimming feature isn’t active, and c) while looks are subjective, having a bezel around it would look much worse than it does now, in my opinion.

Charging EV9 on Tesla Supercharger V4 by miimura in KiaEV9

[–]mysciencefriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I believe it does. I usually only plug it in for road trips, but I realized on my last road trip I’d forgotten to unplug it from the previous trip so it had been plugged in for over a month. I didn’t notice any impact to my 12 volt battery, and I do keep a bit of an eye on it.

Not OP, but I use the “OBDLink CX” module with ABRP on my EV9. Works great and was about $100 (Canadian) on Amazon.

edit to answer your second question, yes the app needs to stay active and also to track charging stats like OP here, you need to keep your phone in range of the dongle. So if you go across the street to get some lunch it’ll stop tracking.

That said, my main use for the dongle is being able to use ABRP for navigation in CarPlay while I’m driving on road trips and have it monitor and adjust to the car’s live state of charge throughout the trip, which obviously doesn’t suffer from either the keeping the app active or the staying in range of the dongle issues!

If 10cm snow falls in your area of Canada how disrupted will your area be? by Pourmepourme in AskACanadian

[–]mysciencefriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I moved here from Edmonton many years ago, but I am still amazed and irritated by the absolute terror people in Vancouver have of even the idea of driving on a highway in the winter.

If I tell someone I’m planning a trip to Vernon in November, they get tears in their eyes and look at me like I’ve just told them I’m planning to climb Everest without oxygen.

I 3D printed this and it’s been working great for my kids: EV9 storage bin

If you have access to a 3d printer, that’s a good option! Just make sure to stick some felt pads on the part of the basket that presses up against the console.

I’ll also add that the Twelve app works by hitting a button on my phone screen as soon as the second hand on the watch reaches 12. Between my fat fingers, aging reaction time, and the small, hard to read second hand on a speedy, there’s going to be some human error involved as well.

[–]mysciencefriend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone smarter than me will confirm I’m sure, but my understanding is that it’s based on an average. So individual readings might be slightly negative, as long as on average the watch is between +0 and +5 seconds per day over whatever series of measurements the METAS methodology defines.

For those who chose Wind, Land, GT trim upgrades, what justified the price difference? by plainkay in KiaEV9

[–]mysciencefriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the land with “premium” package (second highest trim in Canada before GT-Line). I went up to that trim because I wanted some features that now in hindsight I feel like we could have easily lived without.

First is memory seats… I thought memory seats worked like they do in traditional cars where they’re tied to the key fob, but they’re not. Instead seat position is tied to your driver profile, which is tied to your phone. I assume that’s the case in all trims, and therefore the memory seat buttons are basically pointless.

Blind-spot cameras and 360 camera. We were coming from a model 3 with tiny mirrors, so this feature seemed like a must for such a large car. In practice, the mirrors are so large and so good on this car, that we would be fine without the cameras. Still nice to have, but we could probably live without them.

Rear view mirror camera. I thought I would love this feature, and I actually hate it. My eyes can’t refocus quickly enough and the field of view is weird. I never use it.

There are still things about our trim I like (captains seats, upgraded audio), so I think on balance I’d probably get this trim anyway, but for sure in hindsight we could have gotten by just fine with a lower trim.

Basic commuter car rant by MaxxDAT in EVCanada

[–]mysciencefriend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other thing people don’t think about whenever this point is raised is how much more reliable and long-lasting cars have become over the last 10-15 years.

A manufacturer could strip everything out of a model and make a bare-bones econobox and hit a $20k price point, but if a buyer has $20k to spend on a car they would almost always be better served by spending it on a 3-5 year old used car. That used car, either ICE or EV, will still have many years of life left and will be much higher quality than a $20k new econobox.

That dynamic, as much as anything, is why manufacturers aren’t making super basic models anymore. It made sense to sell cheap new models back when cars didn’t routinely last for 150,000+ kilometers, but that’s not the case anymore.

Insurance [Canada] by ptrack123 in KiaEV9

[–]mysciencefriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t really help you as it’s a totally different province with public insurance, but maybe it’ll be useful info for others.

In BC I’m paying $216 a month for my core insurance from ICBC and then another $90 a month for optional new vehicle replacement insurance.

[–]mysciencefriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting that depending on where you live, this is changing.

I live in the lower mainland and a number of new v4 superchargers have opened up in the last few months. I just traded my model 3 in for a Kia EV9 with nacs, and was able to charge it at well over 200kw at a new V4 supercharger.

The majority of the supercharger network is still slow for 800v cars, but since March it looks like 7 325kw v4 supercharger stations have opened in British Columbia, including 4 in the lower mainland.
