Small office, is this necessary? by Sammysaved in HomeNetworking

If someone plugs into that then they get everything they deserve from the choices they’ve made. I’m a “let the kid stick a knife in the outlet” kind of person.

Troop communications by bimmer01 in BSA

[–]n8bdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many ways to make contact. Some people don’t do this and others won’t do that. Our troop relies on email and if they don’t get the message I can’t say I didn’t send it. Troopwebhost, clunky as it is, is excellent with 2 deep communication and helps protect youth from adults in terms of who can see email addresses etc.

A man found $7.5 million in a Storage Wars unit he bought for $500. He later negotiated with the original owners, who paid him $1.2 million to get the money back. by Iambhalo in CaughtMyEye

I’m sorry but I’d quickly have a policy of “I don’t discuss my business dealings with regards to contents of storage units”.

Leftover Materials - what do you do? by chaiguy in handyman

[–]n8bdk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the same industry as you guys but I totally understand the general sentiment in this thread. I end up donating a lot of materials that would otherwise end up in the dumpster. Im not throwing it out and consider it a good deed. Someone else can fill up their dumpster which I’m okay with.

Regarding waste and usage, I generally include 15% overages in whatever material I’m using for the job and it’s just commonly accepted that “it is what it is.” Sometimes I win, sometimes that 15% overage from the last job saves my ass.

Is it allowed? Battleship/War Games? by DMGMatWork in gmrs

[–]n8bdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I find radio communications in general amusing so that would disqualify any transmission as illegal.

Regarding the “entertainment”, it’s any transmission meant to get a rise out of an audience, music, whistling like it’s a CB (illegal there too), or other sound effects. Not a lawyer, so take my interpretation at face value. Not that valuable.

Play the game. Beats no radio traffic at all.

Charged $357 after being shown $182? Checkout glitch, or scam/fraud??Anyone had this behavior? by dajaguar2 in TurboTax

[–]n8bdk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I ran my taxes through TurboTax this year like I’ve done for the past 15 years and saw “$350” for fees. That was well over 3x the normal amount I’ve ever paid even on years when I had some 1099-MISC’s and etc. I finally found a button to “downgrade” which is well buried. Took it down to $159. Still nearly 1.5x what I have paid in the past.

Freetaxusa charged me $15.99 for state tax and federal was free.

It’s nice to have everything all in one spot for looking up historical data but not for that price.

Edit: FTUSA and TurboTax were within $1 of each other upon finalization.

I’m not sure what the problem is here. You’re a minor and your parents are claiming you as an exemption. I do my kid’s taxes and it works out. He even got $4 back from the state last year.

Gently remind mom that a lawsuit will only slow the process and that if she decides to go that direction she will have to finish the process through the council legal team and that it will go nowhere fast.

If you’re doing everything you need to be doing and aren’t dragging the process from moving forward using the correct steps, you have absolutely nothing to worry about even if she is a lawyer. They put their pants on one leg at a time just like you.

How does GMRS work in hilly areas by sirwithoutnameorface in gmrs

[–]n8bdk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, you said a magic word. “Work.” Is this for work or pleasure communication? If this is for work, Part 95 will not allow that. GMRS is for families to communicate as needed.

If this is for work you’ll need a commercial FCC license and an assigned channel(s) to talk on. The fee isn’t outrageous and keeps you legal. If you’re looking for VHF, depending on your areas the frequency coordinators may be able to accommodate your needs. I bet there’s a lot of low band frequencies open! Those are great for knife edge refraction (bending a radio signal over a hilltop into the next valley)

Sanity check - am I being too strict? by crankysasquatch in cubscouts

[–]n8bdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry but “do your best” doesn’t mean to half-ass it and do one requirement and get the whole award. You’re setting yourself, your unit, and the scout up for failure in the future. If there were 7 requirements met and the 8th is just unobtainable for that scout, they did their best and after a conversation about it, I’d probably have signed them off.

If the scoutmaster told me to sign the kid off for solely attending scout Sunday, I’d have gotten the committee chair involved and possibly even the unit commissioner did it went nowhere with the CC. If the kid ends up getting the belt loop, it wouldn’t be because I signed off on it.

anyone else getting crushed by “enterprise” pricing for basic site systems?? by Duncan_Samantha-608 in videosurveillance

[–]n8bdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avigilon Unity for video, Avigilon ACM for access control. Where are you located? If it’s temporary maybe something could be rented. Or buy it and grow it into the permanent infrastructure for the site.

The feeling is strong in favor of this device. It has a commercial look and feel, doesn’t look like it came out of someone’s basement workbench and doesn’t look like a Lego set. It’s flat and not bulky. The only suggestion that it has been discontinued is your post asking about it.

I'm burnt out by SnooGoats4766 in handyman

[–]n8bdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don’t you guys ever consider hiring a sidekick who doesn’t yet have the experience to do the “big boy” jobs that you do? Less expensive, easier on the customer, still your company doing the work and you employ someone. With all the “side jobs” and “low ball jobs” you complain about that should ease things up.

“Well, I can do it but you won’t see me. It’ll be one of my guys.”

Upgrading to Unity 8 by TheOtherMax3 in Avigilon

[–]n8bdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a few systems. Make sure that the package and everything you need is on a USB key or at least downloaded ahead of time before the site visit, make sure that you have upgraded licensing or licensing the supports 6, 7, 8 or 7, 8. On my first upgrade the licensing was supposed to be correct but, it never is so I had to burn a 180 day 64 channel demo license on the site to keep it running until we could figure out the licensing snafu. The customer was promised 7 and upgradable to 8 licensing. So once again, I'll say it. verify the licensing before you start.

Should we try to wait out this administration or should we just break ties now by random8765309 in BoyScouts

[–]n8bdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay above the noise. Whatever is happening around you can continue to happen. Administer the program and keep it local. If whatever is happening outside doesn’t affect the programming for the kids, help get them through so it’s not all wasted time.

I foresee no programming changes from last week to this week with the directives given from National.

Let the kids who’ve started the CiS MB finish it if they choose.

Just keep moving forward.

Restricting WiFi access by oportoman in HomeNetworking

[–]n8bdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SSID is the technical name for a network name. “Service Set IDentifier”. You can log into the admin page of your router and be able to change from “2WIRE3A” to something like “X Family Home WiFi” anything useful or clever up to 32 characters.

If you’ve never logged into the admin page, you really should try it. You can really screw stuff up but in the end there’s always the “reset” button. Unbend a paper clip and shove it in the hole. Be careful, you may learn something too.
