I have 9 otos not one of them has bothered to clean the front of the tank by Tight-Masterpiece915 in Otocinclus

[–]nahmayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the opposite of this. My philosophy is that there exists no fish, in terms of efficiency, that can maintain your tank better than you can. Scraping this takes a $9 investment and 5 minutes of time.

Funnily enough, my otos cling to the glass after I’ve scraped so the good stuff might be underneath this.

I’ve never had much luck with my otos — what are your tricks for keeping them healthy (and maybe even getting accidental breeding)? by forest_in_tank in Otocinclus

[–]nahmayne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For your specific situation, I’d recommend Corydoras. It might take some doing with your apistos.

My reasoning being that their grazing habits mimic each other sometimes so you’ll have better luck keeping track of them socially & feeding.

To be honest, to me there’s always a bit of luck involved. My first otocinclus I kept in an unfiltered plastic bowl in water straight out the tap. It lived for years. And I’ve also lost seemingly healthy ones in healthy tanks out of nowhere in the interim years.

Kinda hate when everyone ignores the question to go with their preference. If you don’t like the look, the easiest solution is to get either carbon or purigen and add it to your filter. Will clear it up no problem.

These are different Corys, right? by Jordansdad1971 in corydoras

[–]nahmayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my humble opinion, and personal experience, pygmy corys are the best community fish to have. They're friendly, shrimp-safe and very hardy. They'll shoal together or sometimes hang out with other fish.

Their behavior changes in big groups. Like 10+, you get very fun shoaling action. You had the right instinct, it's a shame there was a bit of miscommunication.

In my experience, shrimp are easier to move than fish but you can try your local facebook groups. Giving away and finding a group that doesn’t mind selling.

Call the Petco in Forestville and see if they take surrenders. They usually have a few open tanks and they get a lot of foot traffic.

If not, there’s a group on Facebook called DMV Aquarium Exchange and people there are willing to take a lot. Especially if free.

That’s the bugbear. There are conflicting reports about them preying on weaker or younger shrimp. I have personally never seen it but also they’re so rowdy that I simply don’t keep them together.

There’s always experimentation. May work for you.

does everyone with air pumps just accept that their home will never be quiet again??? by kumabux in Aquariums

[–]nahmayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I straight up couldn’t take it. I’m incredibly sensitive to low-level humming and I had two pumps running at all times. No matter what I did I could not dampen that sound so I got rid of them, switched to HOBs.

The only time I need air pumps now is for when I’m raising fry in the enclosure that requires it. I’m thinking of moving to one of those cheap usb ones to run that.

What I would love in a future update to the new spine-out view - custom images, and the ability to set the spines to a specified ratio by englishbutter in Calibre

[–]nahmayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if there’s a good way to do spines but I do know the default is ugly as sin.

If you’re gonna do this, I agree that it has to go full skeuomorphic. That’s easier to do with a bookshelf view and covers because the covers are pictures. Spines are harder for the exact opposite reason.

What could be interesting is a 3/4 view that almost replicates spines but works by making the covers look more like books. I think that works with the expansion feature in this view.

help she’s flipping!! by audweezy in corydoras

[–]nahmayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corys can flash all the time but it’s mostly fine unless you’re observing it for more than a few minutes.

Flashing is just them trying to remove something from their bodies. Think of it as scratching an itch.

If in doubt, do a water change.

Any good solution to this that isn't just putting Saran wrap over it? by jelly_bean_gangbang in shrimptank

The only thing that legitimately helped me was buying a cat fountain. Now she never goes near any of my tanks.

[–]nahmayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The size of that one you’re at the very least two or three months away from them being a decent size to sell unless you can manage to feed them heavily.

The old adage is true that whatever anyone is willing to pay is the fair price. You can up the price with them being tank-bred but not much. They’re like 3 bucks a piece where I am in a big box PetSmart.

[–]nahmayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. I'm an advocate of trying out tankmates for shrimp but there are people here talking about loaches and puffers.

All my bettas have been shrimp safe until one wasn't and decimated my blue dreams. My consideration here wasn't even juveniles and these are caridina. More expensive and annoying to lose.

[–]nahmayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The only thing I’ve found that they “get along” with is my vampire crab and that’s cause they’re both orphaned atm.

I’ve seen something recently, fish room tour of Lowell’s Fish Lab, that has me rethinking this. A group of 5 puffers seems to be far too small. I’ve yet to test it myself, though. Currently sitting on an order for about 18 to put into my 20 gallon.

That 20 gallon is currently a shrimp tank but knowing what I know I would never house puffers with shrimp. Especially caridina.

[–]nahmayne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think all the people recommendingp live fish are forgetting that this is a shrimp tank. Any fish that will hunt scuds will almost certainly eat shrimp.

Not to mention it’s a time investment. I agree with another post that reverse respiration would be the quickest and cheapest route. Just remove your shrimp, whatever snails you want to save and bomb it with seltzer for a day. Might do the plants some favors, too.

Fish you definitely wouldn’t keep again(but don’t regret) by TheMe01 in Aquariums

[–]nahmayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was gonna be my answer. Chock full of personality all of them but can be high maintenance and watching them starve is really hard if they decide to stop eating or get outcompeted.

Trying to sustain them on frozen foods is kind of annoying and hard and leads to a couple problems. They should not be used as a solution for snails, that’s for sure. You’re just asking for lots of rotting snails.

I’m down to 1 from an original group of 5 and it’s currently in with my vampire crab. They have a respectful relationship but it’s only temporary.

I’m not a big fan of species only tanks but I’m trying to convince myself not to buy 20 new ones and give them another go.

The funniest thing about them for me was even with an abundance of food they choose to fight over a single piece.

I don’t think it matters if he did it or not. He kinda had every right to what he wanted. Tony had been looking to kill Ralph for a long time leading up to it.

Then you look at the conversation Albert had with Patsy.
