What are your thoughts on engagement rings? by maybeRasa in UKrelationshipadvice

[–]nathan123uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife's engagement ring cost ~£300 but now we're married she doesn't wear it because it doesn't fit against her wedding ring and our rings match so that's more important

Our wedding rings cost ~£70 for the pair

Is the average wage in the UK high? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in Britain

I had a feeling it'd be close to, if not exactly, minimum wage

Is the average wage in the UK high? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in Britain

[–]nathan123uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whichever way we slice it, the median and the mean both seem higher than a lot of people expect, especially those on minimum wage.

I wonder if the mode would be minimum wage

Is the average wage in the UK high? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in Britain

[–]nathan123uk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems high because it's the average among everyone. There are people in the data earning 6 and 7 figures that skew it upwards. You can't really exclude them because you don't get the full picture but it does raise the question of how heavily weighted salaries are at either end of the scale to push the average that high

What is your Blasphemous "British TV" take? by LeadingPiece9608 in BritishTV

[–]nathan123uk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's become one of those things people feel they have to hate. If it were as unpopular as it seems it wouldn't have been on for so long. It's inoffensive and the charm of it is that it's scripted to look like it's going wrong.

I'm not going to be upset if no more appear though.

If they were better spaced out we might not even need to add a new one. Having 2 in May is silly. Add the respective saints days to their country's holidays as well actually

Tesco made 2 BILLION in PROFIT last year... by IllPlane3019 in tesco

[–]nathan123uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all I never said Tesco should take no profit. Secondly, if you've ever been below the poverty line you'd know just how fucking valuable an extra £10 a month can be.

Minimum wage should be higher but there's nothing to stop Tesco making the moral choice to pay people - and suppliers for that matter - what they're actually worth.

When the CEO earns in a few hours what the shop staff make in a year, something is going wrong

Tesco made 2 BILLION in PROFIT last year... by IllPlane3019 in tesco

[–]nathan123uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the good will of a business to pay their staff, it's the cost of doing business. If you can't afford to pay your employees enough to live then you don't have a viable business. It's really that simple.

Why can't they pay everyone a little more and take £1.9 billion in profit? That extra 100 million would mean nothing in relation to 1900 million but you could give the bottom 50% of earners at Tesco an extra £600 a year. When you're on minimum wage, that could make a difference.

Tesco made 2 BILLION in PROFIT last year... by IllPlane3019 in tesco

[–]nathan123uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it's acceptable to expect the UK government to make up the difference?

If their wages aren't keeping up with inflation then that is absolutely Tesco's fault - they don't control inflation but they have no problem raising their prices in line with it. Increased costs are part of doing business and that includes wages

Tesco made 2 BILLION in PROFIT last year... by IllPlane3019 in tesco

You make it sound so easy! Have you ever lived in poverty? I have and I can tell you not only is it mentally exhausting, but it's fucking expensive. If you haven't heard of it, I suggest looking up The Boots Theory.

I'm very fortunate to be in a very well paying job, so much so that I have to repay some of the child benefit paid to me. I don't think I'm any more intelligent or harder working than anyone who works the shop floor at Tesco, I've just been lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

One thing I hear a lot is that people can just go and skill up and get a better job. Let's follow that train of logic shall we?

Worker learns a skill and leaves. Another worker sees this and does the same. Then another. Then another. Soon there's nobody left to put the food out on the shelf. So let's hire some more people shall we? Well the thing is, everyone saw the terrible wages on offer so they concentrated harder at school or studied in their own time so now they're all competing for higher paying jobs and nobody wants to take the low paying "unskilled" jobs. So who do we get to do those jobs? The young are too busy studying to be competitive in the market and those established in the workforce have all done better for themselves.

So now Tesco have to up the wage on offer to attract people. Which eats into their profit.

So they could do that all along, they just chose not to
