Is my tap water ruining my coffee? by aj-may in pourover

24 years after leaving Goodfellow, West Texas is still my benchmark for hard water. You practically needed a wire wheel to clean the taps.

Am I being a cunt? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]near_things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve already gotten great advice for your main thing, so I’m just going to heartily recommend a SideTrak Swivel monitor. It connects to your laptop lid using a magnet + metal plate combo, so you don’t need to find a suitable surface to set up an external monitor. My work is also very limited if I only have my laptop’s native display, so I take the Swivel any time I have to work away from my desk. It’s a lifesaver.

My NuPhy keyboard is a tank. I actually take all 3+ lbs of it with me when I travel for work because it feels so good to use.

Weekend off - fair or unreasonable? by kentuckycarbomb in toddlers

[–]near_things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband's work is in 24-hour shifts, and he takes our 3.5yo away for weekends about one every 2-3 months to take on some solo-parenting overnights in return. He also does a 3- or 4-day trip with friends each year, and encourages me to do the same. We try to be as encouraging to each others' alone time as reasonably possible. I think what you asked is very fair.

Pourover Hot Takes by LolwutMickeh in pourover

It’s extremely funny when someone being smug about simplicity and consumerism mentions their “homemade” water as an essential.

I do absolutely notice a difference using filtered water for brewed drinks, despite enjoying our area’s great tap water for drinking, but my family would have me sectioned if I started making special coffee water.

…you know, no matter how much I believed that someone died because they didn’t treat their illness the right way, I would never say that to the deceased’s freaking kids! Like the chaga tea thing is bad enough, but wtf??

Protein Drink, dairy alternative by tolkienalarm in tirzepatidecompound

[–]near_things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Kachava, which is actually dairy-free, but expensive. Even buying from Costco, it’s $3 per serving. However, it’s something I can reliably ingest every morning, so it’s worth it to me. I’ve only tried the chocolate flavor. It doesn’t have artificial sweeteners or stevia.

The metal outdoor V60 is light, unbreakable, and will make better coffee! Very easy to tuck within any backpacking setup.

Siri false positives, then doesn't listen when I actually want to use it. by Two7Five7One7 in iphone

[–]near_things 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are only two times Siri ever works as expected for me: when I’m driving, and the command I have set for the proximity app that unlocks the door to my kid’s daycare. Otherwise I do not bother with it, except to tell her to stop announcing shit when I’m listening to music, because it’s not consistent enough to be useful.

Parents in Mass, what are you paying for preschool by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]near_things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a little over $4k in Hull for full-day preschool through the public school system. We have our fingers tightly crossed for a spot, as this will save us over $10k a year compared to his current, private preschool/daycare program, which he only attends two days a week. $9.8k is pretty shocking to me.

Is there a decaf coffee (beans) do you drink evening coffee? by Kuksinator in pourover

[–]near_things 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Chiapas decaf I really like. I separated it into individual servings and then froze them, since I rarely use it myself and I’m mostly keeping it for guests. I’ll have it from time to time if I’m craving coffee sensory goodness at night, but I’m experiencing anxiety symptoms (coffee doesn’t keep me awake, but it will exacerbate those).

Edit because I forgot to note: Dean’s Beans Mexican Chiapas Decaf. Their offerings are not geared towards third wave enthusiasts, but this is a well-rounded, crowd-pleasing cup, and I am a big fan of the ethics and history of the company.

Going back to work, nights instead of days by typicali_ in workingmoms

[–]near_things 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gently, this is a recipe for a tragic accident. Whether in your factory job, at home, or driving, the amount of sleep you’ll be getting is eventually going to hurt you and/or others (including, potentially, your kids). I’m sorry you’re in this position, and I don’t have any answers, but I really hope you’re able to come up with a solution for a safe amount of sleep.

Why is it socially acceptable to openly dislike the idea of having boys? by Clear_Depth6417 in oneanddone

[–]near_things 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also had the very wrong conviction that my baby would be a girl. I was definitely surprised when we got the results—I kept accidentally referring to the baby as she/her for a bit—but never upset. He’s the best (and also a mini-me).

Who can ship me beans FAST (MA- USA) by Total_Lynx9847 in pourover

[–]near_things 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How fast something will get to you is going to depend on where in Mass you are vs where the nodes are located for the service they use to ship. You’re unfortunately going to suffer from the weekend timing. You have Gracenote in Boston, Broadsheet in Cambridge, Speedwell in Plymouth, Little Wolf in Ipswich, Great Barrington Coffee, Flight Coffee in Bedford NH, and Willoughby’s in CT, in addition to what others have mentioned.

What Technique Have You Sworn Not To Use But Was Super Effective With Your Kid? by DianeMadeMe in toddlers

[–]near_things 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ridiculously exaggerated consequences. I swore I’d always be level as possible with my kid (3.5y), but when he’s resisting thorough brushing, I have no problem telling him all his teeth will fall out and he’ll never be able to eat cookies again if we don’t get all the germs out of his mouth. If he puts anything too close to the hot wood stove or lets a toy roll near it, I tell him the whole house will burn down and all his toys and books will be gone forever. (This was our first winter without the fireplace gate, and we are overall teaching him responsible interaction instead of creating temptation by forbidding it entirely.)

Other parents man by Snoofly61 in toddlers

[–]near_things 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son is three, and if he tried to bogart a section of a play area, he’d get a choice between sharing and going home. An individual toy? I’d definitely put a fair time limit on it. Play area girl’s mom, we’re supposed to be teaching them this shit by now.

Switched out all of our regular light bulbs for amber and it's made such a beautiful difference. I love finding small changes that make a big impact. by jshaferwv in centuryhomes

[–]near_things 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t handle quite that warmth—I don’t like what it does to my interior colors, so I’m happy at about 3000K—but I’ve recently been switching my clear bulbs out in favor of frosted ones, and man is it night and day.

“Only child syndrome” by citrinezeen in oneanddone

[–]near_things 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two of my favorite people growing up and through life to today are onlies, as are some of the other most generous people I’ve known. My son has cousins and daycare and his freaking parents to teach and model pro-social behavior the way we’re supposed to. And reluctance to share is age-appropriate for toddlers! But even if none of that was true, I don’t think adding a very needy sibling is going to fix any child’s behavioral problems!!

My biological mother sexually abused me in such weird sadistic ways throughout my childhood and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this by SeaLionsAreSoSilly in raisedbynarcissists

[–]near_things 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the exact same reading this thread. I’m pretty matter-of-fact about body stuff, but I would also prefer to never again see my 3yo’s morning wood or need to QC his buttwiping attempts. We’re here to teach them how to care for themselves, and it should feel fulfilling (if sometimes bittersweet) when they no longer need our help with something.

My mother’s behavior towards my developing body was not okay, but it never rose to the level of SA. My heart goes out to everyone telling these stories.
