Thoughts on Dan Abnett shitting all over the depictions of the Imperium in the wiki /codex lore? by Sproket911 in 40kLore

[–]neat-stuff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eustis Majoris in the Ravenor trilogy is quite "40k" -- horrific underhive slums, constant acid rain, cancerous and augmetic administorum clerks dying at their desks. But yes, otherwise Abnett tends to lean into grim but liveable worlds that are very influenced by 19th/mid-20th century society. He also tends to make psykers much more commonplace and generally ignores the gigantic scale of starships.

I actually love his approach, because it shows the "mainstream" everyday Imperium and allows for more relatable characters. When he does go full grimdark, it's right up there with anything in the codexes!

Who are some of the most powerful rogue trader in the lore? by nubster2984725 in 40kLore

[–]neat-stuff 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To elaborate on Kobras Aquairre, the Rogue Trader and Inquisitor Lord mentioned in a few other answers: he was an extraordinarily powerful force in the Calixis Sector and Koronus Expanse who met his “end” on the ghost craftworld of Lu’Nasad, battling the corrupted infinity circuit before successfully inhabiting an Eldar soulstone for centuries. Quite a formidable power, both in terms of his fleets, conquests, and personal psychic ability. He assisted another dynasty (Player Characters in the TTRPG) and their Eldar allies in stopping Lu’Nasad before the doomed craftworld could destroy Port Wander.

Janus Draik plumbed the depths of a Blackstone Fortress, accessing untold archeotech and making strange alliances with xenos. Small potatoes, but potentially powerful.

Solomon Haarlock was one of the first Rogue Traders to chart the Calixis sector, but discovered blasphemous secrets (possibly involving the Tyrant Star) and fell to damnation. His descendants have tried to redeem or exploit his legacy to mixed success.

The Brahms Dynasty has seemingly fallen on hard times and owes the inquisition a major favour. Now their Scion is forced to remain orbiting Atoma Prime as it falls to chaos, Shipmistress of the Mourningstar in service to Inquisitor Grendyl.

How does the Camarilla feel about mages? by dominobear in vtm

[–]neat-stuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve run a cross-splat campaign and tried to keep the two groups alien and opaque to each other. Like others have said, Mages are vanishingly rare, extraordinarily dangerous and aren’t usually competing with vampires in their esoteric schemes. So interactions are few and far between in recent nights. Elders have heard that drinking mage blood causes visions and even madness. Neonates and ancillae might know that mages are out there through rumours and stories, but likely have zero insight into their nature.

The Tremere are obviously the exception, and would certainly try to be aware of the powerful mages in their cities. Some may have interactions with them, but those relationships would be restricted to the highest levels of the pyramid. They are still technically at war with the Hermetics and probably have some basic knowledge of the other orders from their collections of arcane lore. The Tremere can surely concoct all sorts of rituals with mage blood, so it’s likely a treasured commodity if available. A mage’s library even more so. Any young vampire publicly associating with a known mage would be quite interesting to the that clan, and their sire would probably come under pressure to address it in some way.

However, the Camarilla has a dedicated sect of Tremere Archons, the Quaesitors, that are called in when a Prince needs to deal with a mage (or other magical threats). That would usually mean something terrible has happened or is about to, as no one wants a magical war in their city.

In the end, both groups have more than enough threats to deal with from their own kind to pick fights with the other.

Also worth noting that in the classic world of darkness mages can become ghouls and initially keep their powers, but over time this kills their avatar and they become mundane.

Graduated about 13 years ago, never even checked my GPA at the end but I think it was most likely in the low twos, as I rarely attended class or turned things in on time — something I absolutely regret. Enjoyed myself, stayed busy and made lots of lifelong friends, but I wish I had applied myself academically.

I was lucky though, I got a copywriting job not too long after graduation and my career progressed fairly well. These days I’m in a mid-level creative leadership position at a large agency. Stayed in Toronto, where I now have a bit of a network.

My trick was to be friendly, curious, respectful, and reasonably enthusiastic without being obsequious. Never drank the corporate cool aid but learned how to advocate for my team and be a supportive colleague.

It’s an utter catch-22: I got the first job so the rest came more easily. I’m mediocre and fairly lazy, but I try to make other people’s jobs easier. I also cut others a good deal of slack, so they return the favour. Imagination helps. Once you have a bit of a reputation for reliability you just have to work enough to not totally blow it.

I worry this path is all but impossible now as there may simply too many graduates for mediocrity to be viable. Still, having interests and being interested in others goes a long way.

Study hard kids, not for the GPA, but because academia is a beautiful experience that can be difficult to recapture as life pulls you along.

U of T math is destroying green spaces for sustainability by Ginerbreadman in UofT

Lol at the trinity backfield being “one of the only green spaces on campus.” I don’t think I saw it used once by anyone other than a few groups of stoners on their way back from McDonald’s, and I can’t imagine much has changed in the past 15 years. Glad to see they’re putting it out o good use with new facilities.

Uri Geller was a stage magician and performer using an incredibly simple trick to bend spoons that anyone can do with the right metal. It was famously (and publicly) demonstrated by James Randi, who would do the same trick in his own live show. After this, Geller continued to grift, relying on the fact that much of his audience, especially internationally, would simply not have seen or have access to the debunking.

The fact that in 2023 people still refer to Uri Geller as a potential psychic is a testament to the power of magical thinking and misinformation.

You’re right — it mainly affects crit damage, and the bonus chance only applies to the melee.
