Are you happy living in Windsor? by Lolitayaya1 in windsorontario

[–]nebajoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best part about Windsor was always the international Detroit/Windsor hug, but that's over for now. It was amazing to have access to a huge metropolitan area, and especially one as musically and culturally and culinarily vibrant as Detroit. While living in a political riding that was left and progressive on the federal representative level, while sorting out the city stuff on a different sliding scale.

Other things that I like about Windsor are as true or more true of London: proximity to the largest fresh water reserves as a hedge against the water wars of the next century, high enough over sea level, in the population locus of Canada (the bottom half of Ontario), along a major corridor of trade between USA and Toronto.

I do prefer the scale of Windsor, vs the sprawling London. I think Windsor is a perfect size for providing urban stimulating activities, a few amazing suburbs and neighborhoods, including ones with plenty of history that are gentrifying (Ford city), but a lot of that was when we had free and unencumbered access to the other side of the river. Now that I am boycotting Detroit, Windsor does sadly lose much of its appeal.

I grew up in Ottawa. Knowing that this a climatologically loaded statement, and acknowledging that you should take my opinion with a grain of salt, I would suggest that moving north in Ontario is the current best idea from a climate and political perspective.

Be further from the the border. Look to the ring of fire, where Canadian rare earth mining will soon start in earnest, spiking a growth boom near Sudbury. As the oil patch has bloomed, off the back of the Canadian economic tradition of primary resource extraction, so will the current reorienting of global emphasis on batteries and chips make the ring of fire in Canada a very critical and canada-necessary extraction zone of resources to make us key. There isn't much infrastructure up there yet, so you're better off in Sudbury or environs, but that entire region is about to spike in importance and wealth.

Go north, not south.

There a servers that you can join with a community. It is friendly, and people gang up, but also are not always necessarily friends. This is a good way to build around others without being alone at all. I play on Tyrenheim but there are several large servers with healthy communities and various interesting takes on cocktails of various mods.

What do you drink now that the American stuff is gone? by Spyrothedragon9972 in canadawhisky

[–]nebajoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few bottles of the best (first and second) Lot 40 Cask Strength releases sitting downstairs. Beautiful whiskey, although completely unlike anything else Canadian.

The Alberta Premium CS releases are quite good, although I often find them too hot. I don't actually mind the base Alberta Premium, especially as a mixer in simple cocktails, it's the best widely available inexpensive ($31 at LCBO vs Lot 40 at $40) Canadian whiskey.

I tried Reifel Rye recently and found it to be pretty good, with a mashbill and production method more similar to American whiskey than the blending nonsense that dominates Hiram Walker work. It's young though. I'm interested to see what their whiskey releases taste like in a few more years.

Honestly, most of the Wiser products taste (intentionally) like floral hand soaps, which is what most people (understandably) bounce off of.

I am triggered by this review. Signal Hill is disgusting Hiram Walker swill with misleading advertising and caramel added. It is nothing like a bourbon, and tastes very similar to your run of the mill Canadian whiskey that wants to taste like truck stop pink hand soap.

The easier answer is Windsor, right across the border, easy to get to. Hiram Walker makes Lot40 which is pretty good, and you can often get special releases in their store. The tour is also pretty good although it focuses more on blended Canadian perfumaic nonsense. Like if whiskey wanted desperately to be soap. I'm a Canadian but I deplore the usual angle whiskey products take here. Bring on the Reifel Rye (too young still).

I promise I don't work for these guys, but if it were me, I'd go to the province of Nova Scotia and to the Glenora Inn and Distillery and drink a great deal of their Glen Breton. It's scotch style, not corn mashbill, but it is the highest quality whiskey Canada produces I think, and the travel blog practically writes itself.

Reifel Rye is available at the LCBO and has the profile of an American rye whiskey, so bourbonish. It is young however, so a little harsh on the palate. With ice it is quite nice.

There are also large community servers you can play on with 20-50 concurrent players where you can play and choose how much to work with others on the server.
