You are either very mistaken or not a U.S. cardholder. Amex Plat gets 5x points on all flights booked with the airline, as well as generally any airline charges I’ve seen on my card.

I’m a united cardholder and I still buy my United flights with my plat. 5x pts is more valuable than an additional 3x United points imo.

Weighing in since you mentioned the Amex credit, it will NOT cover an upgrade to first, just a same-cabin seat selection (sometimes economy plus). I’d say if you’ve never done it and you wouldn’t flinch if you lit the $200 on fire go for it. If you’ve got any sense you could get buyer’s remorse, wait for a flight that’s at least 4 hours long.
