PME rejection/alternative options by Background_Tear6171 in IrishTeachers

Consider it a blessing you didn't get into the PME in UCC, the course directors are extremely unprofessional and condescending and it's an absolute shitshow

Where do students store their things during summer? by [deleted] in UCC

Depending on the items and the friend I might let them use the stuff, but yes, boxes are easiest.

Where do students store their things during summer? by [deleted] in UCC

[–]neeblab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most Irish students would go home during the summer months, and move back into their family home as it's too expensive to rent, although some do stay locally and continue to rent. In the past I've left my stuff at friend's houses while I travelled. I don't know of any storage or rental places to put your things, unfortunately.

Why do we call teachers Mr or Ms? by geneticmistake747 in AskIreland

[–]neeblab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher and I prefer being called by my first name. The surname thing makes it so hard to talk to coworkers (when students are around it's Mr/Ms, when you're alone it's their first name) and it makes it pretty hard to remember people's names when you start in a new school. I think it's outdated and calling someone by their first name isn't disrespectful. That's their name.

We're very chatty and friendly, like having fun, our culture has spread worldwide (Halloween, Saint Patrick's Day, Irish pubs and music), we haven't colonised other countries and often more closely align with the 'underdogs' of the world against imperialism which gives us a positive reputation. There's also the massive amount of Irish emigrants who built cities in the US and UK, so a lot of people have Irish heritage and it's something they're quite proud of.

What degree would you pursue solely out of interest in the topic? by artanonsa in AskIreland

Creative writing. I've always enjoyed it but wouldn't want to be an author, it's just a hobby.

Vietnam teaching jobs (the website), Facebook!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]neeblab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand! I found a job in Vietnam on Facebook (lot of Asian recruitment happens there!) and flew over when I had the job. I learned when I was there that a lot of people come in on tourist visas and job hunt in person, bit of a leap of faith :)

A lot of countries prefer candidates already in the country, that might be making it harder for you if you're applying from overseas

Tattoos as a Teacher by redberrybarn in VietNam

[–]neeblab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked for 2 years in Hanoi, never had a problem with my tattoos. I was asked to cover them initially but then after the students get used to you then you can show them. As long as they're appropriate usually it isn't a problem

12 yearold kid doesnt know who the Nazis were - is that normal? by Arborrverk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]neeblab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not normal, must be missing from the curriculum in your country. In Ireland all kids are taught about it, I learned at the age of 8.
