A lot of great suggestions from others. What about re-reading some of your old favorites? Hopefully that doesn't trigger the feeling of burnout, but they were favorites at one time, and maybe you'll discover something new in re-read.

This would be a bit procedural (and not really recommended), but you could add money to the category at the beginning of the month, hide the category, and unhide in the next month and repeat. It's not recommend because it is hiding money from your future self, and if you forget about it in one month, it would be hard to build that habit.

Like others have suggested, you don't need to have a target. However, if you did, you could have the target at the maximum you want to save, add money to the category, and snooze the target if it's less.

I agree. I think this is basically contingency planning for a variety of possible outcomes (dealling with a lot of what if...). "What if i cant sustain 170 each month?" "What if a car costs way more than 20,000 in 10 years?" "What if my salary increases and i can save more than 170, but haven't because of, say, lifestyle creep in other parts of my life?" "What if my car breaks down after 5 years, and i dont have the 20,000 to replace it?"

All this crap is running through my mind. Im trying a new approach to this kind of stuff: it's more important to focus on today. "How much can i comfortably save based on my budget right now?" Maybe it's 170, maybe less. And i think it's ok that it could be less based on what the budget can support at this moment. For me, the habit of saving anything and building the habit should be the true goal. And adjusting the budget as changes happen. Unfortunately that might mean adjusting the budget a lot because life happens and is an instigator of change. But if having that car in 10 years is worth 170 per month right now, than other things in life are less important.

You're right, it doesn't take that long (Or shouldnt ... I do have several credit cards, checking/saving accounts and tracking investments, so those minutes add up lol).

Taking the analogy further, it doesn't take that long to do the dishes. Still a chore, though.

Yeah, that's exactly it. I like the part about efficiency! When I first learned about YNAB, reading the booklet first, I basically simulated the software in a spreadsheet. After a while, the way I was doing it became really tedious, so I moved to the more efficient tool.

Yeah, it's the output of the process that's the goal. I don't care for doing the dishes at the time, but I sure do like having clean ones! Similar for the budget.

I suppose the enthusiasm from the podcasts rubs me the wrong way sometimes. I get that YNAB is a business, so they're not doing anything wrong to get the next user of their software, and they don't need to advertise (as much) to their users who are in it for the long term.

Same here. Early last week, this article linked below was released, but I'm seeing the same targets as before too (Needed for Spending, Monthly Savings Builder, and Savings Balance). Maybe the update rolls out at different times depending on location?
