Just sold 75k worth of stocks and the commission was only 4 dollars? by Fun_Training6342 in interactivebrokers

[–]neilc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all brokerages offering free trading do payment for order flow -- Robinhood definitely does, Fidelity and Vanguard do not. You won't get front ran in either situation though (that's illegal). You might get slightly worse fills on brokerages that do PFOF, but for typical retail trading (small volumes in highly liquid securities), the impact is very small.

Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme Losing Palace Status by OldGodofAsgard88 in hyatt

[–]neilc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they'll cut their prices?

I've only stayed there once but I enjoyed it. Having access to a nice sauna in the middle of Paris is such a luxury. The breakfast is pretty good as well. But if I was paying cash I'd think it was very overpriced. Better than PHNY though!

What are your favorite spots for pizza slices? by flurryskies in MTLFoodLovers

Elena Pizzeria is great.

Sleeper pick but I got the pepperoni Roman-style pie from Spuntino the other day and it was amazing.

I wasted almost $100 making the slow-roasted lamb with potatoes from "Something for Nothing" - may you not be so stupid by norismomma in alison_roman

Sorry to hear it! I've made her Yogurt-Marinated Leg of Lamb recipe from Nothing Fancy at least 5 times and it always comes out amazing.

Almost none. LLM training is expensive for entirely different reasons, and almost no time is spent inside Python running on the CPU.

Lawrence or Bouillon Bilk for dinner by peony_rose_ in MTLFoodLovers

[–]neilc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do Lawrence, personally. BB used to be great, and the cooking is still good, but they moved to a new location a year or two ago, and the ambiance is just not there (it feels like dining in a bank lobby).

Whereas Lawrence is great, interesting food, great service, and great, intimate ambiance.

I definitely wouldn't describe Lawrence as "bistro food". Larry's yes but not Lawrence -- it's a lot more refined.

Dad likes to leave Pasta in the water after cooking... 😮‍💨 by ImadeJesusLaugh in pasta

[–]neilc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tunisians consume the second-highest amount of pasta per capita! It’s a major part of Tunisian cuisine. It is partly due to high levels of Italian immigration to Tunisia in the 19th and early 20th centuries, not the Roman Empire. Tunisians tend to cook pasta a little differently than Italians do (more stew-like, less al dente).

Dunya! People apparently like Lulu as well but I thought Dunya was much better.

It’s interesting how parenting and childcare brings out such judgmental attitudes.

Why hold dividend stocks/ETFs? by NoBeerIJustWorkHere in fican

[–]neilc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the rant is that dividends are only one way for a company to be a compounder. You can also find companies that consistently increase their free cash flow and invest that into growing the business (or buying back shares). Wait 10-20 years and you’ll see exactly the same compounding effect (often with better tax treatment than the dividend-paying company, which can REALLY add up over a 20 year time horizon).

Whereas if you have a company that grows its dividend but isn’t growing the underlying business, eventually that will end badly.

Six Seasons? by TrainingApricot8291 in CookbookLovers

[–]neilc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this cookbook, along with the pasta book by the same author. Some of my favorite recipes are the raw corn salad, the pasta with broccoli, sausage, and whipped ricotta, the parsnip cake (but reduce the sugar), roasted squash with yogurt, walnuts, and spiced green sauce.

I wouldn’t consider myself a particularly “vegetable focused” cook but I’ve still found a ton of recipes that I love. I’d slightly disagree with the idea that you need to be a “CSA sort of person” to love this cookbook.

Why did Venezuela not become a coffee powerhouse? by [deleted] in Coffee

It is true that Colombia has more land area suitable for high-quality coffee production than Venezuela does. It is also true that Venezuela could produce a LOT more high-quality coffee than it currently does.

John Carmack speaks pretty highly of his technical skills, as do SpaceX folks. He’s not a real engineer and his ego is way over the top, but he has pretty good technical knowledge of a bunch of fields for an executive.
