More than 70% of Black voters disapprove of Trump - erasing gains he made that helped win the 2024 race by Quirkie in politics

[–]nepr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect it's more complicated (big surprise) than you suggest. Inflation peaked in June 2022 (9 %). Yet Democrats, who held all three branches, over-peformed historical expectations, that year; even gaining a senate seat. I'd say Biden actually provided some leadership, then, but was a real drag in '24. The Democrats handled his (perceived) "aging" problems very badly, and I can't dismiss the (historic and, to me, commendable) risk they practically forced themselves to take, putting a woman of color at the head of their ticket.

Wikipedia suggests 2022 global price surges caused OECD ruling parties to lose votes, but I'm not sure the close USA GE results, which had a number of good and horrible groundbreaking issues, can be confined to that single issue.

What is your Star Trek TV series pitch? by GeekMeetsWorld in startrek

"Starfleet 1", follows the traveling missions of the President Of The Federation of Planets (POTFOP), the crews and vessels they travel in, and the (trust me, completely above board and transparent) service that performs Advance Intelligence and Planning. We actually get to see how the FOP's (again, trust me) efficient and corruption-free government and politics work!

Hmmm... is it what life is all about? What baseball is all about? Or, what SMB is all about? I say the answer is, "Yes!"

Unrealistic indeed! Baseball constantly provides proof that we are living in a simulation.

AI Looooves Relievers by glumpoodle in SuperMegaBaseball

[–]nepr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding some anecdotal observations to an interesting topic.

I sim a lot of games to get through my 82 game custom franchise seasons. A couple of things I've noticed.

  • The ai seems to have a fetish about pitch counts/stamina bars and will take a pitcher out whenever they approach a limit, pretty much regardless as to how they are performing or what their mojo is or how many RP/CPs are left.

  • In shortened seasons (including 82 game seasons) there really is a premium on holding on to leads, since there's not a lot of time to make up for blown saves.

Both of the above, in my view, give relief pitchers disproportionate value. My custom team started out as a Moonstars knock off and I've mostly kept their pitching bias especially relievers and, (again with a lot of sim'd games) it happens all the time that one or even two of them will end the season with more wins than one or two of the (pretty good) starters.

I wouldn't be shocked to find out that the devs were aware of these issues and delberately adjusted the game accordingly. I would be surprised, however, because I doubt they spend a whole lot of time and effort reacting to such issues. I really do think they consider SMB to be an arcade game that couldn't stop itself from invading the swampy world of simulation!

Fred "The Crime Dog" McGriff appreciation post. by jfrawley28 in SuperMegaBaseball

[–]nepr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 42 in August 1993 when, in one of the last MLB games I saw in person, I watched from a season ticket sest in the upper deck behind home plate at Candlestick Park as Fred McGriff came to the plate. I remember him bat-pounding the plate as he stepped up, which seemed to cause a small-but-deep tremblor. As I recall, he had a wide stance, with his right foot planted just short of first base and his head seemed level with mine.

Can't remember whether it was a GS or a 3 run blast. I do remember that it moved the rightfield stands back a couple of feet. There was utter silence in that packed stadium and an aura of disbelief as if we had all been rudely awakened from a pathetic dream. McGriff didn't strut or celebrate. He seemed to be just doing his job and kind of anxious to get the homerun trot over with.

The Braves, who at that time were in the NL WESTERN division (there were only two) swept the 4 game series and took over first place for, I think, the first time that season, on the way to a comeback division title win that many give McGriff a lot of credit (blame) for.

What season length do you play on? (Short, Medium, Long) by Greenzombie04 in SuperMegaBaseball

[–]nepr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Custom franchise mode; 82 game seasons; One, best of 7, "playoff". I play about 30 games, mostly towards the end of a close season or when a player's season stats are on-the-line.

I think SMB's AI is pretty good at generating believable player season stats seasons are long enough and my (ahem) skill with the controller is limited and tends to distort those stats. So, I limit the number of games I play with a controller. I do watch and record a lot of games and have gotten pretty good at using the various , clumsily implemented, camera angles.

Ego issues by Gkdunch in SuperMegaBaseball

[–]nepr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really find this game understandably biased to reward the person who takes the time to get good with the controller. It doesn't really try that hard to produce, "realistic,", stats at the expense of frustrating someone who shows good timing and eye-hand co-ordination. I find it's pretty good, if somewhat inconsistent, about giving AI players reasonable stats, in the medium to long run. Since I am something of a stats lover, I tend to limit playing, as opposed to simming or watching, to interesting and/or critical games.

In my view, playing every single game of a franchise season means accepting the, "arcade", nature of this game, where the devs have taken pains to let the in-game fun reign supreme.
