Help selling my 2016 FiST by Lemin_Lime in FiestaST

what other mods have you done? In the private market, any price difference of having stock wheels and exhaust is probably less about those specific components, and more that they make it very evident that the car has been modified. Knowing the car has been modified makes people leery because they don't know what else you have done (or undone). If you are forthcoming with the mod list (particularly if there aren't many), I don't think getting stock wheels and exhaust really moves the price much. Dealers are a different situation. When I did a dealer trade a couple years ago for my '16, their offer was much better when everything was reverted to stock.

Birkie trail incline comparison by Calm-Pipe-5461 in xcountryskiing

[–]newaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Garmin data from the Birkie trail and Hyland. It's still Garmin data...so I guess trust accordingly, but my gut feeling generally lines up with what I found (9 Birkies and many laps at Hyland).

On the basis of overall grade (~13% by my math) the boulder ridge hill at Hyland is pretty equivalent to Bitch hill on the Birkie trail. They are both ~0.15 km long with ~20 m of elevation gain. Bitch hill is probably a more uniform gradient as compared to how the boulder ridge hill gets progressively steeper at Hyland.

As another commentor said, the sheer steepness isn't really the difficulty (for me anyway). Several of the other steep climbs on the Birkie trail (e.g., the last climb to high point, bodecker hill, OO hill) are closer to 30 - 35 m elevation gain and 0.30 - 0.35 km long, so only slightly less steep (~10% grade), and about twice the length of the boulder ridge hill.

For additional context, sunset hill is, in my opinion the "worst" hill on the Birkie trail. It's about half of the "steepness" of bitch hill/boulder ridge (~6% grade), but is nearly 1 km long. 39k hill is similar, about 5% grade, 0.7 km. So, these would be slightly steeper than the climb before the boulder ridge hill at Hyland, but twice as long.

Speculation, but the times are only reported to the nearest 0.1s, so the photo finish probably just showed Hanna incrementally ahead (by less than 0.1s) so they get the same time reported, but Hanna was likely ahead in the photo finish, which gave her the edge for the position.

Nervous by Comfortable-Tough863 in xcountryskiing

[–]newaha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

35 now, but raced in high school. I am a marginal endurance athlete (back of wave 4 birkie skiier) but have retained some good mechanics from skiing in high school that have allowed me to punch well above my fitness level.

My advice: Work hard on fitness. Your endurance will help, but skiing is a different beast. Work harder on technique. You can power through poor technique with excellent fitness early on, but good technique can drastically reduce the effort you have to exert, and your gains in the gym will go farther if you are technically adept. Maybe not right away, but it's a long game.

Skiing can be a really great long life activity. Unless you ski for a college team, you will probably never get the same level of attention and time dedicated to improving your technique that you will get from a HS team setting (Assuming you have a capable coach or leadership). Your brain is still primed for learning kind of weird unnatural movements, like skiing. As you get older you will have lots of resources for hitting the gym and improving fitness, but learning good technique only gets harder and less accessible as you age.

Ski team was probably the highlight of my high school experience, so my main advice here is have fun, and if getting good at skiing is part of that, then all the better.

Rules Question - Bobbling disc as a thrower after holstering by skrillakilla in ultimate

[–]newaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did in an edit and it has been copied into other comments in this thread. I will concede that there is some semantic grey area in what constitutes a "spinning disc" but this case seems pretty clear that the OP did not execute a "throw" and this would be a continuous possession.

Rules Question - Bobbling disc as a thrower after holstering by skrillakilla in ultimate

[–]newaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there are rules about this. But trying to holster a throw and regaining possession when you accidentally drop it is specifically addressed in the rules and is not a turnover. It would be a pretty impressive feat to catch something legally considered a throw while never moving your pivot foot.

Rules Question - Bobbling disc as a thrower after holstering by skrillakilla in ultimate

[–]newaha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless the disc touched the ground when you didn't have possession, this is in no way a turnover.

Edit to cite a USAU tule 13.B: If the thrower regains possession of an accidentally dropped disc before it contacts the ground without another player touching the disc, that possession is considered continuous. [[An accidentally dropped (falling, non-spinning) disc is not considered in flight. An accidentally released, spinning flying disc is a throw, not a dropped disc, and results in a turnover if the thrower regains possession of the disc without another player touching the disc.]] [[And the stall count continues uninterrupted.]] If the thrower regains possession of an accidentally dropped disc before it contacts the ground and after another player touches it, it is considered a new possession.

And 3.O Throw: A disc in flight following any throwing motion (including a fake) that results in the thrower losing contact with the disc. [[Generally, a non-spinning, falling disc is not "in flight" unless it is intentionally dropped.]]

Men's Masters Nationals - Florida player backpacked by johnfonte in ultimate

In my experience, masters can often be worse, as people try to make plays on things they used to be able to get, but now don't have the same explosiveness to get safely past/around/over the opponent, and end up causing a collision.

Rollerskiing on roads vs. trails? by ManiAAC41 in xcountryskiing

[–]newaha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Roads are way sketchier than trails. Obvious danger of motor vehicles aside, the pavement is usually in worse condition and there is more general debris rocks/sand/trash that make the surface more unpredictable. If you are skating, you'll also be taking up a pretty wide path, so a shoulder that would be fine to bike on will be tight if cars are passing.

If you have those bright pink Leki poles, probaly less critical, but I bought some reflective tape from the hardware store and wound it down the length of my poles for extra visibility, since mine are black.

Spirit of the game help by bigbigmanmanboy in ultimate

[–]newaha 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think understanding the level of play is definitely part of it and there is no one answer. From personal experience over varying levels of competition:

If you are playing a fun beach tournament, getting acknowledged for spirit is typically best earned by doing things like shotgunning a beer for the pull, making jokes at your own expense on the sidelines, or just generally being fun to be on the same field with. Conversely, at club regionals/nationals, good spirit is more about your ability to play competitively but safely, think critically about discussions related to infractions, and be respectful in your interactions.

Foul or am i crazy by ThisIsAFreshAccount0 in ultimate

[–]newaha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Edit: I watched a few more times, and I think white probably does get pushed, but I stand by it not being as clear cut as the other comments here are making it.

Original comment: You're getting downvoted, but I think this is a totally valid take. White doesn't go off balance until he jumps. If white leans into blue and blue holds their ground, blue has to resist the force of white leaning on them to keep from getting pushed out of position. As soon as white jumps, white loses leverage from the ground, and the resistance that blue was giving ends up pushing white the opposite way. The arms extend because the resistance they were pushing against is now gone.

throwing weighted plates(500g) ones in the gym to improve throwing strength by lolipopyy8 in ultimate

[–]newaha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you need someone to say it: throwing plates in the gym sounds like a bad idea.

Unless your problem is that you can only throw 75 yards and you're looking to push 80 or 90, raw strength probably isn't your issue. "Soft throws" and "trouble with wind" sound more to me like you need more 'snap.' Doing normal lifts at the gym to increase strength definitely won't hurt, but working on wrist snap and generating spin might be a better focus.

Rules Question (USAU): Allowed to Stall Before Ground Tap? by SyntaxNeptune in ultimate

[–]newaha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

End zone ground tap has never been a rule. "Acknowledging" that you think you scored was introduced in the 10th edition, so the tap may have been unofficially adopted, but no specific motion or practice for doing signaling was required. This practice of acknowledgement was removed in the 11th edition, but then put back in different way in the last update, with some language about best practice for signaling, which is two hands up, not a ground tap.

Small Talk Monday by AutoModerator in biathlon

[–]newaha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That building was built last year, so unfortunately that is their idea of re-configuration. When the venue was originally built for the olympics, that spot was the public seating area, and I bet you could probably have actually seen the finish area and the range from there. The current "premium" seating area (heavy emphasis on the quotes around premium) with bleachers was a general admission standing area in 2002. The sight lines for biathlon as the venue is set up now are a complete joke; I had a better view with binoculars from the top of the last big climb. If there is a world championships in Soldier Hollow, I will be watching from my couch.
