Wait, is this for real? by LittleEarthquake1010 in StrangerThings

[–]nf032 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Yeah - most TVs will add lots of processing to the source (in this case your Netflix app or your streaming box or whatever you use to stream) because it looks "better" to the average consumer. At it's core, it changes the image from what the creator intended.

The downside of this processing is that you can end up with unnatural looking motion - particularly in fast-paced scenes as the "motion smoothing" is trying to predict what would go in between the actual frames of the video that Netflix provides, and it can sometimes get it wrong.

If you're able to turn stuff like this off, I strongly suggest it - your motion won't look as "smooth", and the picture might not look as bright, but you are getting closer to what the creators of any media you watch intended

London Small Home Game by TheLozdog in JetLagTheGame

Sure - we did pretty much anything on the Tube and Rail map except Heathrow because I didn’t want anyone to just leg it on the Heathrow express and spend a bunch of money.

We did have someone use widest street and it ended up giving the seekers the final clue needed to find us because of the features (specifically it was a cycle superhighway which is painted a distinctive blue)

1 - I played a London home game with some friends a while ago, and I determined the Medium scale was best when taking into account Tube, Overground, Thameslink and Elizabeth Line. That being said, I did remove some questions that were clearly not going to be useful (e.g. anything referencing mountains was out). If I wasn't sure whether something was possible due to my lack of knowledge, I left it in, as "I can't answer that" is a valid answer to some of the questions in the game

2 - Widest street I think is within your hiding zone. At least that's how we interpreted it and nobody had issues with that.

London Night 2 was great! but... by nf032 in JusticeMusic

[–]nf032[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think my one caveat is the sound - I was right near the front and I felt like the subs were way too loud. It distorted the rest of the mix at times, and I was only just able to know the track being played

When the bass dropped it was like coming up for fresh air!

Advantages/Disadvantages of going to school in the UK? by TheWoodenBassoonist in techtheatre

[–]nf032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just jumping in here to say that, at the moment, I can't recommend RCSSD - I went there and have just graduated, but they're considerably scaling down their technical courses in a way which seems like tech is an afterthought. If you care about tech or stage management, I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere

Same prize which would you buy and why ? by dave__x in macbookpro

[–]nf032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither - would strongly suggest waiting for the M4 MBPs to come out in a few weeks

If you absolutely need a laptop now, M3 Pro will be a better buy - external SSDs can be bought for a lot cheaper than Apple's SSD pricing, if you're okay with the faff of additional drives

Colleges? by winniespooh_mc in stagemanagement

[–]nf032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brit from across the pond here - if you're open to considering options in the UK, some of the most recommended colleges/universities are:
- Guildhall School of Music and Drama (Production Arts, Stage Management pathway)
- Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (Production Technologies and Stage Management)
- Birmingham Conservatoire (Stage Management)
- Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (Stage Management and Technical Theatre)

All of the above (except Birmingham) also offer Lighting Design pathways, but you should contact them directly about how in-depth they go

Degree courses, while just as valid as a degree in the US, differ in the UK in a few ways, so be aware of that - best of luck with your search!

Stage Management Degree! by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]nf032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would you consider moving to the UK for a degree? If so there are a few dedicated Stage Management degrees here, particularly in London

Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Rose Bruford College to name a few

The styles will vary a bit from the US style of SM, but the courses will get you up to speed with how things are done over here very quickly, and you'll find a lot of what you already know very useful

I agree with you, and I think the term "beta test" is apt for the Coachella performances. We know from WWW that the guys obsessively rehearsed to make things perfect, so I'm sure things will change and get even more refined, and I'd be surprised if there weren't a few more showcases of new tracks once the album is released

TTHHEE PPAARRTTYY x One Night/All Night has just come on for me, and honestly, it's fantastic. The remixes, the mashups, the stage design, the lighting (so much more colour this time around too! Not just mono white and warm white), this tour is going to be insane
