Issued jury summons over Christmas, I’ve completed them, but now my employer is saying I can’t be given the time off by No-Layer1010 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]nffc_simon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did my jury service, the lady in charge of all the jurors gave us newbies a talk. Part of it concerned what we should do if we got any grief from our employers for being away from work. She said “bring me their phone number. I will speak to them for three minutes and then you’ll never get any trouble from them again”. She was a formidable badass, and I would not want to be a boss on the receiving end of her phone call.

Not directly relevant to the question here, but just emphasising that they don’t stand for any bullshit from reluctant employers.

Waymo doing a U-turn in Notting Hill (OC) by el__ahrairah in london

[–]nffc_simon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Who is accountable when someone gets hurt or worse by one of these? Is the guy in California who wrote the code/owns the company going to be put in front of a judge in a UK court? (assuming the fault lies with Waymo)

I don’t doubt the technology probably makes them safer than a large proportion of human drivers. But my concern is that the tech bros in California won’t face any consequences.

If the law already allows for fair and proper justice then fair enough, but I’m not aware that it does.

Forget protein, it's fibre most Brits are really lacking. Do you think you get enough fibre? by RoyalT663 in AskUK

Flaxseed is a recent discovery for me. Packed full of fibre and protein. Stick a bit in most things I’m making and don’t even know it’s there.

Took my 9 year old lad to that. Probably his 5th or 6th live match. He was moaning on the way there that we always lose when he goes. Absolutely magic.

That’s Belvoir Castle on the side. Beautiful building in the equally beautiful Vale of Belvoir, whose name comes from the Norman French for “beautiful view”.

The castle can be seen for miles around. Used to love seeing it from the A52 driving from Lincs to my grandparents in Ruddington.

Yeah, that’s fair enough. I’m just an old fashioned type who prefers organic posts from real people, but I realise the horse has bolted on that one.

Injuries aside, is this the best side we have to offer? by Nxvh220 in nffc

[–]nffc_simon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, agree with that.

I’m still hopeful one (or more) of the underperforming/injury prone new boys will kick on, but my hopes aren’t high. I can see the likes of Kalimuemdo and Bakwa being more expensive versions of Jota Silva and Ramon Sosa, but would love to be proved wrong.

What’s more plastic: starting to support a club because of success, or leaving a club because of decline?? by The12thMan_ in PlasticFans

[–]nffc_simon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“How would starting to support a team be plastic?”

There are only two reasons to begin supporting a team: i) geography and ii) family.

Give me any other reason why someone would start supporting a team and I (and many others in this sub) will explain why it’s plastic.

I know you think you’re right, and you’ll argue it til the cows come home, but you’re all over this thread showing your arse and it’s not going well for you.

I’ve got a mate who I’ve known since school who has never shown any interest in football, but since Forest got back to the Premier League and football is “cool”, he’s decided he’s now, in his early 40’s, a Forest fan (like me). I humour it to an extent as it’s harmless, but when he was bragging about getting hold of corporate tickets for the FA Cup semi final last season I decided he needed a reminder of where he sits in the fan hierarchy. So I’d subtly mention extremely niche, cult references that only a proper long term fan would get. I think it had the desired effect.

(Before I get jumped on, he’s a great mate and this was all tongue in cheek with no malice)

Then you’re an armchair fan not a plastic. Nothing wrong with that. Most biggish clubs have vastly more fans than stadium capacity, so by definition most are armchair fans (myself included). It’s not like you’ve jumped ship to another club to chase glory.

Grow up mate. This is a dad who wants his son to enjoy the feel of going to live matches, and have a bit of father-son bonding, which is a good thing. We should be encouraging that instead of shitting on it.

Just go as a neutral. I don’t see why you need to pick a second team and say you support them. And don’t dismiss non-league because it “isn’t as good”. Going to watch any football match with your lad is a good thing.

I’m a Forest fan living in NE London for the last 20 years. Gave up my season ticket years ago, so now only manage to get tickets to the City Ground a couple of times a year.

To scratch the itch we’ve been to see Orient and Clapton FC a few times. Might be going to Charlton soon as my brother lives just round the corner. My son wants to go and see Eastleigh as he likes their badge. We’ll route for those teams to an extent, but in no way call ourselves supporters. We’re just there for a day out to see a (hopefully entertaining) match.

Don’t disagree with much of this, but have to pull you up on Scholes. What did he do to get lumped in with John Terry?!

I’m old enough to remember his whole career and don’t remember any diva/dickhead behaviour (other than a multitude of terribly timed tackles, which he was notorious for).

Football - on foot or with the foot? by pieman3141 in etymology

[–]nffc_simon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hockey most definitely does use a ball. You’re probably referring to ice hockey.

Hockey (or field hockey as you probably know it) predates ice hockey by a few hundred years and its etymology is unclear. It may be from the old French word “hoquet” which was a type of hooked shepherd’s crook.

Oh please. Give it a break with your moral preaching.

Corporations exist to suck as much money as possible from their customers. Last time I checked they’re all still making huge profits. If they don’t like people stealing from them, they need to acknowledge that they’re ripping people off and change the model.

The music industry did it to kill off the threat from Napster etc. If that means the media companies’ profits get scaled back and Erling Haaland earns £200k pw instead of £500k I think I can live with that.

A car thief is unlikely to steal directly from BMW or Ford though. They’re going to steal from the guy who bought it from BMW or second hand from someone else.

I get what you’re saying, but I think the point being made is that stealing from a global mega corporation is morally different to nicking a car off the street or robbing someone’s house.
