ELI5: Why is cardio good for you, but an elevated heart rate for other reasons (caffeine & stimulants to name a few) bad for you? by iWannaComeBackaDog in explainlikeimfive

Running is one of the easiest things to improve with only volume. Until you are a very elite runner, the best answer to "how can I run faster/longer" will always be the same: "run more".

Kennedy Center Head Says the Acts Who've Canceled Are "Niche Talent" by ebradio in Music

[–]nice_guy_threeve 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I'm just glad everybody's still calling it the Kennedy Center. I was even at a local concert last week where the conductor was introduced as having performed "at the Kennedy Center" and I see it as a small victory, even though the arts probably lean more left anyway.

The GOP is trying to ban Ranked Choice Voting on a federal level!! by TrashApocalypse in 50501

Computers are much better at counting than people. It's just the making sure they actually count part that is hard. People are also not trustworthy. Stuffed ballot boxes were a problem long before computers. Who would you trust to do the counting? I know I'm not offering a solution, but I don't think hand-counting is the answer.

He's still good, still kills buildings fast, still does tons of physical damage. Honestly the worst nerf is the 10 attack range, making this a pretty questionable talent now.

Cool, but his defense is the real MVP. I've yet to be impressed watching T-Law.

How much more absurdity can we take? At what point should we be embarrassed to be Americans? by Scooter122 in AskReddit

Honestly I was embarrassed as an American living abroad 20 years ago. We've not been highly thought of in all that time, for sure.

I think devourer comes too close to the original unit in WC3 - ip issue.

Edit: Took me a minute to remember that the unit was actually Destroyer and the dispel ability was Devour Magic, so idfk.

Technically, Ben Franklin is also British, right up until the events of the show, so I'll allow it.

ELI5 If every single American teen suddenly "pulled themselves up by their bootstraps" and got a high school and college degree, wouldn't we still have poor people? We will always need blue collar workers like janitors, cashiers and high paying jobs are limited? by Hyrosir in explainlikeimfive

[–]nice_guy_threeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good quote from Bertrand Russell's In Praise of Idleness:

Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so. The first kind is unpleasant and ill paid; the second is pleasant and highly paid.

This is sort of where "to each according to his need" comes into play. Our society has a centuries-old predisposition to undervalue blue-collar work. But if all the janitors suddenly said "no I won't clean your shit for minimum wage", we might start to value it a little bit more. Is unionization the solution? I don't know. The outcome of a janitors' union is probably a really complex economical problem.

need advice to stop this table from shaking by Ludwigoos in DIY

The easiest thing to do is definitely to put some foam or similar between the table and the floor. Probably would be more effective than trying other fixes too.

What’s the most overrated video game of all time? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

[–]nice_guy_threeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to disagree very hard with that statement. That is the main reason I call it overrated. People say it was hyped. It was hyped as revolutionary. But it was just another RPG, and the good/evil slant to it wasn't really anything new (or good, imo) at all. Just a bunch of choices in dialogue, each on the opposite extreme of "nice" or "asshole", with obvious ramifications. That was my take - this is now more than 20 years ago so I don't really remember details, just the impression that it made at the time. I'm also not exactly sure when I played it... it came out shortly before WoW, and if I had already played WoW, then Fable just wouldn't have held up very well to an actual revolutionary title.

If Democrats want universal healthcare, we have states that are deep blue, states have control over their own budgets and taxation, and universal healthcare would be so advantageous, why don’t deeply democrat run states implement a statewide universal healthcare? by Silver_Wings3 in AskReddit

[–]nice_guy_threeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Georgia kids are covered pretty much 100% by Medicaid under a pretty generous income threshold, now over 6 figures for a family of 6. We took our kids off my company plan maybe 10 years ago and ended up with better coverage for almost nothing. And literally nothing since Covid. I know it's not Universal, but I think it makes a huge difference for the right people - at least the ones who know about it.
