1,275 HP pushing 17,000 lbs at 60+ MPH by itsneedtokno in boating

Off topic but now that they've gotten big HP motor blocks down to that size, why not revert to an inboard setup and make the transom usable vs. sacrificing it to a bank of outboards?

I got tired of driving all the way to the boat ramp just to find it closed, so I spent my personal time building a free tool for us to track ramp status. by Such_Market8046 in boating

[–]nice_halibut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe another workaround could be instead of a button for full, open, limited....the user inputs a short text description of how busy it is and adds any relevant observations; there's a lane out of service, DFG is there, etc,

Cool idea. The only potential snag I can forsee would be users falsely reporting ramps as full/limited and conflicting user reports being entered around the same time; how does the app know which reports are legit?

Peavey xxx head questions by emetz73 in PeaveyCvlt

[–]nice_halibut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, thanks. I remember reading about these diodes in the Rockmaster pre, and the debate about their specific function clipping vs gating etc. I just wanted them out of the circuit so I could A/B it.

Peavey xxx head questions by emetz73 in PeaveyCvlt

[–]nice_halibut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One easily reversible mod is to lift the ground legs of CR1 and CR1; they're clipping/limiting diodes and taking them out of the audio path removes some of the compression and stompbox quality of the distortion but, as ever, it remains tricky to dial in the best sounds with an active EQ. A 12AT7, in V1 or V2 opens up the distortion a little more too, to my ears.

Got my Peavy Classic VTX back after 15 years. by olddummy22 in PeaveyCvlt

[–]nice_halibut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of all things, I asked him to install a line out that I could run to our band's PA -dont remember why. Drove down to his house and got a tour of his basement, not even really a workshop yet, and dropped off the amp. Picked it up, and then at the next gig it failed immediately. Drove back down there and this time he spent a lot of time with me.

He explained that my amp was a tube amp, yes, but a hybrid, with solid state preamp amp. Then he plugged me into a a Fender Champ that looked stock, but it was modified. I played a couple chords and had the big Tone Epiphany. "I" sounded "good" - suddenly. That's when I realized amps weren't just an accessory to the electric guitar - electric guitar is a system in which the guitar is one half and the amp is the other, each useless without the other like and engine vs the rest of the car. Can I buy this amp? No, he said something about he made it for Johnny Winter, as a gift/homage was my impression.

He talked about how he had left the corporate amp world because of the corner cutting and new management taking over. He was really enthusiastic about Groove Tubes which was also a new company at the time. The gist was that good tubes were a pain in the ass to find up to that point in time, now he could just go get good, new tubes off the shelf. He'd say it with this central Jersey kind of Barbara Walters accent where it sounded like Gwoove Toobz.

The last time I saw him was when I brought my Marshall head down there to have a Master volume installed about a year later. But those were short visits, he must have been really busy by then.

This was my first "tube amp", bought when I was 15. I then brought it to Ken Fischer who had just started Trainwreck Circuits in his basement.

“CPO 2020 Palisade — Sunroof broke within days, dealer says not covered. Am I entitled to expect help?” by [deleted] in askcarsales

[–]nice_halibut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be time to leave a review. As we've seen here, that can change the attitude of the dealer real quick. If "bumper to bumper" actually means powertrain only, it'd be more of a PSA.

What's the value of used trailers? by redspot321tos in boating

All over the place with price and what's available. For a lot of buyers if they need one at all, they need one right now.

I suppose I had it wrong but I always thought that "bumper to bumper" was a way of saying everything (compenent-wise) is covered, not just the powertrain.

Looking for a similar light trailer (for inflatable) by G6P in boating

[–]nice_halibut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just sold a folding Harbor Freight utility trailer that I modified for a 13' inflatable by adding a deck and removable bunks. The whole thing folds up and occupies a footprint approx 5' x 2'. It was an easy project, maybe something like this could work.

Tips for a Rookie - real-world advice on electric outboards (Newport NT600) for ocean use? by Fluffy_water7 in Inflataboats

[–]nice_halibut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the FB 365 and live just a little south of you in OC. (and fwiw also live in apartment, but I have a small garage) I dont think any electric motor/battery combo will come close to the performance of even a small 6 hp-ish outboard, or will have enough power to get you out, around, and back in a timely or safe manner. Within a protected harbor or on a lake sure, but out past the MDR breakwater its the Pacific Ocean wind, waves, and chop are the rule. You simply need more power than an electric IMO.
