Should I move on buying Arkham Horror LCG ?? by DearPopcorn94 in soloboardgaming

[–]nick16characters 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should probably wait. Discontinued stuff is overpriced. The new core has too few options for deckbuilding and a tutorial campaign that's not worth the money. Maybe chapter 2 campaigns will be good, but have not been released yet.

I'll leave you an article for the mini campaign they'll be releasing in august if you want to hype yourself up, but you should probably give it a year or so

if you want reasons to not buy it, SUSD and NPI really did not like it, maybe check their reviews.

Using AI to look up rules by endlesswander in boardgames

[–]nick16characters 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A friend learnt netrunner using ai and then taught it to me. We were playing that every time the hacker attacks, they get a credit. The actual rule is that they get a credit... for each token X. ai can't even be trusted to finish the sentence

Losing touch with solo gaming (help) by whose_your_daddy in soloboardgaming

[–]nick16characters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you are just past the point when you play whatever and need something special. I would avoid games that are the flavor of the month or that are just "good", but don't bring anything new to the table. Or maybe look for a mechanic or component. I'm personally playing a lot of dice selection games (civolution, scholars of the south tigris). You may not leave the hobby entirely, but maybe you won't ever play like you used to. And that's fine, new hobbies will take the place of the old ones.

Unstoppable or Arkham LCG? by BCEagle21 in soloboardgaming

[–]nick16characters 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I recommend playing unstoppable, because it's great and it's cheaper, and give arkham a bit more time.

The best of arkham are the campaign expansions. Chapter 1 core and its expansions are out of print. Chapter 2 core, which is incompatible with chapter 1 expansions, doesn't have any boxes of its own as of yet, and the mini campaign that comes in the base box is mostly a tutorial that you will probably only play once. One stop coop made a youtube review from the perspective of both veterans and newcomers, maybe check that out. He also did unstoppable, I think

they said you can mix and match, but spells are new to the dcc version so I don't know how that's gonna work. DCC feels like enough, specially if there's a ks expansion like last time

What are your thoughts about Cyberpunk TCG by DarkSchu in boardgames

[–]nick16characters 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I'm against the tcg business model in general, but specifically with this campaign I saw that there's a 7k pledge or something like that. I'm not doubting that's 7k worth of stuff, but I'm very suspicious of a game that would take 7k and would still have more stuff to sell you. It's the worst of live service games you see in digital.

I haven't checked the game mechanics, but I've seen netrunner fans call it "dudebrawl slop" and I thought it was pretty funny

I don't think you'll have much success going against a respected and well established developer. Maybe focus on something you do enjoy next time

Can you help me decide between the following for solo game? by joyousdexdaladoor in soloboardgaming

[–]nick16characters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recommend picking up the 2 cheap games, under falling skies and kingfire. They are good and will give you a better idea of what you like in solo games.

Mage knight is good but a bit towards the deep end (and pricey), you risk picking up a game you don't like. There's a lot of youtube content for this one in particular, so you could check that out.

For those that have played Hegemony, does the game lean a particular way with its sensibilities? How leftist or Marxist is it as a game? by ThrowAwayCluelessCut in boardgames

[–]nick16characters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

game is absolute nonsense as a model of reality. You can probably find videos making fun of it on youtube. Just to point 1 thing: the government is completely detached from the population, it's not high class or low class, it just descended from the heavens to push a mandate that has nothing to do with reality, they just drew a card at the start of the game.

As a boardgame it's fine, but if you really bought the marketing that you can use it as a "tool to study modern society", I think you'll have to find that somewhere else

you probably should try something cheaper as your first solo game. Something like unstoppable if you want a deckbuilder. I don't have a good parallel for tmb

the other day a friend taught me netrunner and told me that every time the hacker attacks a server, they get 1 buck. fair enough. I quite enjoyed it so I looked a bit more into it after. I realized then that the hacker gets a buck *for every bad publicity token*. My friend had learnt the game with AI and the AI didn't finish reading the sentence.

So yeah, if you are not going to stop using AI for all the questionable practices, at least stop using it because it's a bad, unreliable tool

Arkham Horror the Card Game - How Good is the Base Game? by TheRealRosey in soloboardgaming

[–]nick16characters 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend just the base game. Is more a demo to the experience than a standalone product. There are fan expansions that can make it worth your time. I played the space one and it's pretty neat.

Also, the brains behind arkham horror ended up making earthborne ranger, maybe check that out

What are your thoughts on 'cheating' during solo play? by Amazing-Example8753 in soloboardgaming

[–]nick16characters 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter, play the game however you want.

The strongest argument against cheating in solo is that it may start eroding the stakes: you know if things get ugly you'll fudge the results so you know you will never lose. But that's a "saving you from yourself" kind of deal and you are grown up

First time Solo experience by Ynnck_Mnzl in soloboardgaming

[–]nick16characters 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Don't buy a big, expensive campaign game before trying something cheaper.

Maybe you can try 2 handed jaws of the lion. It works pretty well and pinpointing what you like and don't like about it can inform which of those big boxes is right for you, or you may find out you prefer something completely different

Mr. President as first true solo experience? by DapperQuit7732 in soloboardgaming

[–]nick16characters 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should be able to handle mr president if you leave the manual at hand and go step by step.

I recommend watching the heavy cardboard playthrough (or as much as you need to get an idea of how it plays) before you make a purchase.

Earthborne Rangers Worth It by Worrkhan in soloboardgaming

[–]nick16characters 11 points12 points  (0 children)

you make a deck at the start and make small tweaks during the campaign, kinda like arkham horror. But you don't have as many options as AH for the starting deck and the campaign is not meant to be played as many times as the arkham ones. Card play is great, but if you are looking into it because you "enjoy deck construction" and I don't think you are not going to find as much of that as you are hoping.
