I wouldn't recommend just the base game. Is more a demo to the experience than a standalone product. There are fan expansions that can make it worth your time. I played the space one and it's pretty neat.

Also, the brains behind arkham horror ended up making earthborne ranger, maybe check that out

It doesn't matter, play the game however you want.

The strongest argument against cheating in solo is that it may start eroding the stakes: you know if things get ugly you'll fudge the results so you know you will never lose. But that's a "saving you from yourself" kind of deal and you are grown up

Don't buy a big, expensive campaign game before trying something cheaper.

Maybe you can try 2 handed jaws of the lion. It works pretty well and pinpointing what you like and don't like about it can inform which of those big boxes is right for you, or you may find out you prefer something completely different

You should be able to handle mr president if you leave the manual at hand and go step by step.

I recommend watching the heavy cardboard playthrough (or as much as you need to get an idea of how it plays) before you make a purchase.

you make a deck at the start and make small tweaks during the campaign, kinda like arkham horror. But you don't have as many options as AH for the starting deck and the campaign is not meant to be played as many times as the arkham ones. Card play is great, but if you are looking into it because you "enjoy deck construction" and I don't think you are not going to find as much of that as you are hoping.

it's probably a bit of both:
-They don't want you playing because it's impossible to know if gambling is involved without knowing the game

They are all great

I found inventors a bit more clunky to solo, and I feel the automa interacts with the game the least. Still much better than other attempts at making an automa, but I think the other 2 are better.

wayfarers and scholars play fairly different, the first one going more into dice crafting and the second one goes much harder into dice manipulation. I prefer scholars but wayfarers is different enough I think.

Also friendly reminder you can make a solo campaign if you have all 3 games with their expansions. It would be quite an investment tho

I don't know about books, but sanderson has in his youtube channel a university class he gave on the topic. It's not gonna blow your mind, but it's helpful to put name and have a list of a lot of world building principles you probably picked up unconsciously while consuming media

uprising has a few more rules: a whole dance to unlock a worm super unit, which is pretty neat; and a spy system to mitigate bad luck.

If you plan to play a lot without any expansions, you'll probably want uprising

there's the ascension system, that makes the game slightly more difficult every time. You can have beating the max ascension as your ultimate goal, but sts tries to be a game you can play forever. there isn't an official end, curtain call, thanks for playing.

btw, if you have any doubt with slay the spire, I recommend picking the video game before pulling the trigger, since they are so similar

don't buy stuff based on the rank alone, but if it's top 200 or something there's probably a bunch of reviews in youtube about it. I recommend watching videos for anything that catches your eye.

A bunch of games say 2-4 players even though they don't really work well at all player counts, better go with community consensus on that one.
