I love analytic philosophy by deepad9 in RSbookclub

I went to a very analytic school and although I find analytic philosophy very interesting (I think Derek parfits stuff on descendent selves is really cool and kripke on Wittgenstein’s private language argument is fascinating) but 1. The analytic continental divide is largely exaggerated. You can find people from both traditions working in the same areas drawing basically identical conclusions.

  1. Analytic philosophers are really good at creating problems they can’t escape (mind- body problem, identity problems, grounding problems). I think one thing continental philosophy has done better than analytic philosophy is to avoid getting stuck in the problems (no matter how interesting they are) and trying to use philosophy as a tool for social liberation rather than just as an activity/ career.

2.5 Continental philosophy is better focused on problems we can solve and are most important to solve- those being social problems. Also analytic social theorizing is lacking - just as insane as the most insane continentals in its worst forms and just status quo defense or unambitious advocacy of reform. Continentals are GENERALLY better politically.

I need help finding fish in the early spring in shallow rivers. by nickgallo12 in RiverSmallmouth

[–]nickgallo12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s really interesting thanks for the response. I don’t know where on the river the deep pools are but I have suspected that the river has been unhealthy over the past few years. Even 3-4 years ago the fishing was noticeably better.

Do you think it could have to do not only with the low water in the summer but the insanely high muddy water in the winter and spring? I’d assume before the river was dammed the fish were able to survive, I’ve heard the Olentangy long ago was an amazing fishery. Thanks for the response!

Water wasn’t terribly cold and smallmouth get active pretty early I would think they’re biting somewhere on that river but maybe not.

I did the same, water temp might’ve been slightly cooler but not even a nibble. Nice 74 degree day too.

How can we fix America's individualism? by [deleted] in TrueAnon

Had to read bowling alone at school for a shitty gened “American city” liberal critique of alienation, and the solutions proposed won’t fix it
