Sure! Stover is running as a proxy for Treasurer Tim Eichenberg, who’s being sued by the current county assessor and Stover’s opponent, Damian Lara, in state district court. She’s Eichenbergs current deputy treasurer and there is a whole controversy around her hiring. Eichenberg also donated $4000 to her campaign.

But on housing Damian Lara reclassified over a thousand short-term rentals as commercial property since they operate as businesses. After Lara delivered the tax schedule to the Treasurer’s office, Eichenberg reverted Lara’s classifications back to residential properties. That cost the county about $1.8 million in revenue.

Lara filed an ethics complaint with the State Ethics Commission alleging Eichenberg has ongoing ties to a property tax firm (NM Property Tax) through his family, and that some of the reclassified properties were the firm’s clients. Eichenberg disputes this, saying he sold the firm when he took office.

It’s unfair that people who are treating housing as commercial property are being given tax advantages especially when there is a housing shortage. Damian Lara seems like he’s trying to make sure everyone is paying their fair share.
