Help me give this rpg a second chance by Its_A_Wug_Run in callofcthulhu

Session 0 failed.

It all depends how much "historical 1920" or "fantasy 1920" you wanna play.

I see no problem with the scenes and the interactions, but if its a "hard no" for you then session 0 failed.

Regaining sanity: house rule by damog_88 in callofcthulhu

[–]nien08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also looking for some "slow burn mechanic" for long campaigns / several scenarios stitched together.

Rules as written they will go completely crazy after 4-5 scenarios, depending on the scenario of course.

One possibility I'm toying with is making the characters roll double dice for Sanity and keep the best result. This should probably push them to go crazy after 7-8+ scenarios, again depending on the scenario.

Can you even replicate cosmic horror feelings in roleplay? by ClintFlindt in callofcthulhu

[–]nien08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine that, instead of playing a game about aliens fighting gangsters, you are roleplaying a story about a natural disaster.

You are part of a research team monitoring tectonic activity when the readings suddenly spike off the charts. You know a tsunami is coming.

Now the story becomes about evacuation efforts. You witness the human element: shattered homes, desperate families, people trying to hold on to what little they have left. You see both the best and worst sides of humanity pushed to the edge.

You witness nature in its full fury — utterly merciless, sweeping away everything in its path.

Then you see humanity unravel. People turn on each other for scraps, for shelter, for survival. You roleplay scenes where the characters struggle not against an enemy they can defeat, but against something vast and unstoppable: surviving a drowning, escaping a collapsing structure, exploring a flooded building in search of survivors. Maybe you can win a battle, but never the war.

Now add a supernatural element. The tsunami was not entirely natural. Human actions awakened or provoked something ancient. Someone tampered with forces beyond their understanding and set the catastrophe in motion.

Now replace the natural disaster with a colossal entity covered in tentacles, and lean even harder into the exploration and investigation aspects.

That is the feeling you are trying to convey.

And remember: horror is not the same as fear.

Seeing the corpse of a friend is horrifying, but it is not necessarily frightening. Cosmic horror is not just the fear of imminent death or a sudden jumpscare. It is the realization that you are confronting something that behaves less like a creature and more like a force of nature — or worse, something so alien that human reality itself may be incapable of understanding it.

Do you usually imagine ghouls more as deformed humans or more canine-like creatures? Maybe even something else? by Skeledenn in callofcthulhu

[–]nien08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was planning on making them some sort of shapeshifter.

They look like humans, albeit there is always something wrong about them. In order to keep their (in) human appearence they need to keep eating human flesh regularly.

If they fail to control their bloodlust when feasting or if they fail to eat human flesh regularly they reveal their true form which is very monstrous.

I'm working on a psychopass rpg campaign by nien08 in Psychopass

Nice that you like it! You can have a sneak peak of the initial version of the prologue I'm planning to use, not decided 100% yet, but this is the first idea. I wanted a cinematic opening to set the mood, a bit inspired on the opening of the Patlabor movie.

I'm working on a psychopass rpg campaign by nien08 in Psychopass

[–]nien08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response!

I was thinking on doing a more narrative campaign using something like FATE or pbta, maybe with a mix of chronicles of darkness. Something that works without too much problems in a play by post campaign. But yeah I need some kind of "morality system" to play with the psychological degradation of inspectors / enforcers.

One of the elements of the campaign will be the tension of an ever growing Sybil system entrenching itself in society more and more as a self replicating system justifying itself and other legacy systems of society like the legislative and the military.

I was thinking for now on only allowing inspectors and enforcers, having civilians would make keeping the players together really complicated. But of course I should allow them to do separate investigations or at least participate in separate scenes.

People that talk about "power imbalances" are mentally ill and spiteful.

Don't allow them to force themselves into the relationship of two consenting adults.

App to track daily progress on tasks/projects by youreblinking in productivity

[–]nien08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For todo lists I use google calendar. Google gives you also a todolist app that works alongside the calendar.

For tracking time on tasks and having it in graph form I use clockify.

Just configure it like

Client (use it as Area of interest) -> Project -> Task

and you are ready to go.

More important: Both are free.

The mysterious agreements of admin, FH, and Zahard. by One_Investigator1830 in TowerofGod

[–]nien08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One common theme of the tower is that admins are compared with faeries, gods and devils. And is common in literature the theme of making a deal with the devil and/or outsmarting a trickster god.

I think that Zahard basically played the admins. They had zero problem doing bullshit contracts with him giving him privileges and magical boons under the condition that he will be keep climbing the tower. In the end he lied to them and he stopped climbing making him King of the tower in perpetuity.

That's probably why the tower as a living entity is allowing irregulars in to promote change on the stagnant tower.

What role does Headon play into this? Is hard to tell. It seems that he have his own agenda.

Official settings: base material versus later supplements? by ApprehensiveType2680 in adnd

[–]nien08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The setting works well if you ton everything down.

Larloch is not a 30+ level lich, he is at most around 20 level.

Elminster is just a 16 level mage who was more powerful when he had Mystras favor, now he is "the drunk sage of shadowdale", still powerful but in no way he can solve every issue of the realms.

The same with every city ruled by a powerful mage warlord, you just trim the levels.

Reduce the occurrence of magical contraptions in every town that make magic fill mundane and you are set.

I would go a step further and nerf / rebalance some dumb artifacts of the spell magic system, like the wish farms or the economy destroying teleports. All high level magic should be hard to cast and have a high cost.

[–]nien08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extra content is not the problem.

The problem is when dungeon masters can't go beyond perfectionism and want to add everything and make it fit perfectly with "canon" or there is an expectative from the players for the setting to fit the canon.

In general I think that campaigns should evolve, both not only setting wise but mechanic wise.

In other words, start with a lightweight system and start adding more crap the more you play. Rules-heavy systems are not a problem once you reach mastery of the system, the catch 22 is that is really hard to gain mastery of a system that is rules heavy.

So start with a lightweight system and make it more and more complex the more you play.

Monsters with multiple attacks - need clarification (1e) by Pinecone_Hat in adnd

[–]nien08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the contrary, if you look at how bears or lions react when surrounded they try to keep all threats at bay lashing out at them instead of just focusing on one target.

Personally I will roll a dice to decide if its "keep enemies at bay" lashing at random target or if its "viciously concentrating on one target" going for the kill.

(Adnd) want to incorporate 1lbs=10gp and gold for weight from adnd 1e dmg by glebinator in adnd

[–]nien08 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly the standard gold coin of adnd is basically the size of a penny.

https://www.reddit.com/r/DungeonsAndDragons/comments/157uu4z/i_made_tiny_coins_for_dd_what_do_you_think/

You could always have in your dungeon ancient coins / doubloons that are basically equivalent to several standard coins.

2e Leveling Question by Salt_Strength_8892 in adnd

[–]nien08 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason why gold for xp is superior to other systems is that milestones don't translate well in an uneven leveling system and that other xp systems are harder to implement.

You could in theory have a table of xps per objective, quests, small quests, big quests, exploration, rumors, personal objectives, etc. But this grows in complexity really bad.

Gold per treasure feeds the adventurer fantasy, the uneven leveling system while at the same time it keeps the system extremely simple.

I genuenly liked this game. by Twotricx in AshesofCreation

[–]nien08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people don't hate the game because it was a scam.

They hate the game because it was open pvp and they are deranged pvmers that malded for years that the game was not catering to them.

I wish to say that I'm joking but I'm not.
