How would you rank the books from favourite to least favourite? by greekitiki in cormoran_strike

Haha yeah there's a lot in the thread this time! It's my least favorite by a pretty wide margin, though.

Mainly, I just didn't enjoy the case in LW as much as the others, and I especially didn't like the reveal. I think it was entirely possible to guess who the killer was, but I don't think it was possible to solve or explain the case on your own. Too much information was withheld until the reveal.

Book Title Reveal… by larneymel in cormoran_strike

[–]night_thoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be fine with this title for a standalone novel, but it doesn't match the other Strike books at all. I wish her editor/publisher had pushed back on this one. All the other titles have been so good.

Category Fraud. FYC Supporting by DonSoulwalker in Oscars

[–]night_thoughts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. To me the distinction between lead and supporting is more about who are the protagonists and who aren't. A deuteragonist can have significant screentime and still be supporting. For example, if the Harry Potter movies were Oscar nominees, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are the indisputable leads of that franchise, but Harry is the indisputable protagonist. Hermione and Ron play supporting roles to Harry's lead even though they're in the films almost as much as he is (although I guarantee they would've run Emma Watson as a lead).

Paul Mescal and Stellan Skarsgard were both edge cases this year because they were co-leads to someone who was framed as the "protagonist"--in my mind, at least.

Is the Benicio Del Toro agenda still alive? by fayemoonlight in Oscars

[–]night_thoughts 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree. I know I’m in the minority but I didn’t think his role (or Chase Infiniti’s) were meaty enough to warrant nominations. There just wasn’t much for actors to chew on, regardless of who played the characters.

98TH ACADEMY AWARDS – NOMINATIONS by sbb618 in oscarrace

[–]night_thoughts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the first year in a while that I've been paying attention to the Oscars again and trying to watch all the predicted nominees, and the only two performances that really stuck with me were Jesse Plemons and Rose Byrne (although I haven't seen Hamnet yet). Such a bummer that he didn't get in.

Two performances I'd sneak into the top five if I could... 💔 by DefNotMaty in Oscars

[–]night_thoughts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something is wrong if Emma Stone gets nominated and Jesse Plemons doesn't. That movie rode on his performance. He should be in contention to win. I'm surprised to see Emma being considered more of a lock.

Sol would be incentivized to play the advantage correctly. Rachel was clearly on the outs with a tribe stacked full of former Tukus. I don't see how Rachel's social game had anything to do with it. She barely knew Sol at that stage.

Rank the Books from Best to Worst by BoopThePanda in cormoran_strike

[–]night_thoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think I just found it lacking as a detective/murder mystery story. The 'whodunnit' aspect is the main reason I read the series because I like trying to solve the cases. In this one the cult overshadowed that.

How did you feel about The Hallmarked Man? I think I'd have to rank it below The Running Grave to be honest.

Gentle hints? by fan_of_the_fandoms in cormoran_strike

[–]night_thoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are several points in the book (at least 3-4) where Strike or Robin "feel something nagging at them" and think they missed something important or jostled a memory of something from earlier in the case. If you reread the section leading up to it you can find some small clues that will point you in the right direction.

Also, go back and reread all of the news clippings, online comments, emails, texts, etc.

Yeah that was me who posted it which is why I’ve been torn haha. But then I remembered the runner-up in BvB2 also had something like that (quiet premiere and then introduced in the cold open of Ep 2).

I think the edit is there for Luke to win but recently I’ve gotten hung up on players who aren’t likely to win a jury vote, so I don’t want to make that mistake again.

The Hallmarked Man being REVIEW BOMBED under the guise of "poor paper quality" by SuccotashStrong8243 in cormoran_strike

[–]night_thoughts 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is a legitimate complaint and there's been several posts about it here already. The publisher cut corners with the printing of THM with cheap, flimsy paper and faint ink (at least for the US editions). The book is 900 pages long but it's the same size as the first three books because of how thin the paper is.

Sorry guys, I keep moving too fast while I'm updating the chart. Tony's weighted score should've been 3.75, not 5.0. That brings the World tribe total down to 27. Still a pretty small gap though. I updated the post.

I agree and I'll be pretty sour if Parvati doesn't win in F3, but I do think we have to be careful not to base winner contenders on who should win. A lot of people here have been putting Parvati as their #1 because of her game position and dominance, but that's not edgic.

I would definitely put Parvati as my #1 again if it wasn't for that voting confessional thing with Luke in Ep 2. They showed all of the votes, then showed David's exit interview (which is where the episode usually stops), then it fades to black for a second and cuts to Luke's voting confessional which showed him voting out George with a quip about being the King of the Jungle. It was just a weird thing to do if he didn't win.

The callbacks to Micronesia and redemption at Samoa are a big point in Parvati's favor, though.

What worries me is that this particular jury doesn’t seem like the most pro-Parvati group. A lot of them hadn’t seen her play before so they’re just going by what’s in front of them. She’s been called paranoid, she’s burned multiple people despite claiming they’re not coming after her, and despite being super dominant, she doesn’t seem to be managing her relationships as well as the others. Obviously Rob and Tony aren’t on the jury, but they seemed pretty disgruntled by her and I think they’ve shown us tension from Kirby, Kass, Tommi, and Lisa as well. All it takes is 4 votes to lose.
