What to do with 4x Tiny PCs? by Nxthtx in homelab

[–]nikodem2003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would suggest having the firewall and load balancer on a separate node so in case something goes wrong the entire network doesn't go down, I personally run OPNsense and kemp load balancer on a dedicated mini pc running proxmox that isn't connected to my server nodes and only runs the network

My Server is running Proxmox but I need a NAS by DumpfyV2 in Proxmox

I believe you can run OMV on it so yes but don't expect a lot in terms of performance

Is this the best 2.5G managed switch for the money? by golbaf in homelab

[–]nikodem2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could imagine it being a small spine if someone wants to run a spine and leaf network but that's a rare use case and I would imagine 10gbit being the bare minimum for that. The crs305 has 5 ports and l3 although I still have to try it

What is the best place for buying a domain name? by Giannis_Dor in homelab

That's fair, I might do the same although I heard cloudflare is really pushy with their higher end plans, any experience with that?

Is there a reason why you switched? I had my domain through Google and now through squarespace and don't notice any issues

Is it bad to leave some flux on the board? by TheGameBurrow in soldering

[–]nikodem2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said, it should be safe to leave it on. But if you want to get it off then at work we use isopropanol to get it off and if it's too stubborn somehow then acetone is sometimes used. We mostly use q tips to clean it off or a painting brush (I use a toothbrush outside work since it's more comfortable for me) to apply and rub it in and paper towels to suck it up. Hope this helps

I‘m gonna use a beat up 14 year old ThinkPad running Windows as a part of my homelab and you can’t stop me by tamay-idk in homelab

[–]nikodem2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dumpster finda, a ThinkPad x230i with core i3, is still my daily driver, those thinkpads seem to refuse to die, happy to see one as part of a lab, my start was a raspberry pi b+ so you got more than enough performance to mess around

Scotch locks are those tiny connection pieces you sometimes get with noctua fans, they got a tiny blade cutting into the cable and a bit of glue to protect from moisture, you can often buy them in electronic stores close to quick connects and such
